Accountant: Financial Services

The incumbent will report to the finance division of the university, seconded to the division for research development.

Duties:

• Financial advice regarding budget and financial management of short courses
• Financial control over short courses
• Approving short course budgets and financial reports
• Managing and facilitating tangent planes between the short course and finance divisions
• Managing and facilitating tangent planes between the research environments and the finance and research development divisions
• Preparing and checking detailed project and full cost budgets in collaboration with the research team
• Checking and approving all full cost budgets within the framework of the full cost policy
• Capturing full cost project budgets for all research contracts on the financial system
• Developing and communicating methods and resources in support of implementing the full cost policy
• Expenditure analyses on identified projects/interventions as required
• Dealing with telephonic, walk-in, and email enquiries about financial procedures and systems
• Involvement in the review of financial policy and procedures to keep up with changing practices or legislation
• Implementation of policy amendments
• Ensuring application of financial policy and procedure
• Presentation of formal internal workshops and programmes to communicate financial policies, procedures, and systems
• Preparing financial analytical reports as required
• Providing support to the finance, research development, and short courses divisions during internal and external audits

Requirements:

• At least a BCom degree with accounting as major
• Completed articles at an auditing firm or relevant work experience
• A strong financial and accounting background
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• The ability to provide support at senior level to project leaders
• Advanced computer literacy, with specific reference to MS Word and Excel
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Strong analytical skills
• Ability to multi-task

Recommendations:

• Knowledge of the university’s financial system
• Proven experience in the costing of research contracts and projects
• Excellent knowledge of the national higher education environment

Commencement of duties: 1 August 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
