JOHANNESBURG – One of the miners trapped at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville since Friday has been brought to the surface but has died.
Harmony said he had succumbed to his injuries.
Four miners are still unaccounted for.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Every effort was and continues to be made to get to all of our colleagues as quickly and as safely as possible. Our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of the deceased,” said CEO Peter Steenkamp.
Rescue efforts would continue all the miners had been found.
The five miners were trapped 3.1km underground after a quake on Friday morning.
