An opportunity has opened up at The Citizen for a media professional who will assist both the newspaper’s website and daily paper teams.

The Citizen is part of a huge Caxton network of nearly 100 titles, all of them producing daily reports and journalism through a network of about 400 journalists. Each of these stories appear on various websites but only some of those stories have national interest or offer breaking news.

If you think you have what it takes to spot the kind of content that belongs on in a national newspaper and keeps our audiences clicking and buying our paper, then this is the job for you.

Key competencies:

• Proficiency in both English and Afrikaans (many community newspaper publish stories in Afrikaans). The ability to translate from Afrikaans.
• Capable of working at pace in a high-pressure, breaking news environment.
• Experience in online publishing would be a plus – especially if you are familiar with the WordPress CMS.
• An understanding of Google Analytics would be an advantage.
• A background in either national news or community news would be an advantage.
• Strong language skills, particulary the ability to rewrite and improve hastily written, unedited copy, as well as to come up with snappy, engaging headlines online.
• Social media understanding and proficiency.
• The ability to research and beef up shallow stories as well as being able to write news articles from scratch. Should be comfortable with calling other journalists and sources, if necessary.
• A self-starter, capable of working without supervision for long stretches of time.
• A willingness to work some weekends is a must.

Preference will be given to individuals who add to the diversity of the organisation.
