eNCA | Five key food precautions you need to practice to avoid Listeriosis
JOHANNESBURG – The manner in which food is prepared in businesses and in homes has been under the spotlight since the outbreak of Listeriosis in December 2017.
The source of the outbreak remains unknown.
Last week, 57 people died from the food-borne disease, bringing the death toll to over 160.
According to the World Health Organization, foodborne infection in humans occurs through the consumption of contaminated foods, particularly unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses, vegetables and prepared meat products such as pâté.
“Unlike most foodborne pathogens, Listeria multiplies readily in refrigerated foods that have been contaminated,” the World Health Organization says.
“Transmission is also possible from mother to fetus or from mother to child during birth.”
Fruit and vegetables must be washed well and meat cooked thoroughly.
Here are five key food precautions you need to practice:
- Keep clean
- Separate raw and cooked food
- Cook thoroughly
- Keep food at safe temperatures
- Use safe water and raw materials
