eNCA | Ashwin Willemse saga could be discussed in Parliament
PARLIAMENT – The Ashwin Willemse/SuperSport debacle could be discussed in Parliament on Tuesday when the Department of Sport and Recreation tables its budget vote.
The Minister of Sport Thokozile Xasa responded to the incident at the weekend when rugby analyst Willemse walked off set having accused his co-presenters of patronising him.
Xasa called for his co-presenters Nick Mallet and Naas Botha to be suspended while the station investigates the incident.
The minister said there would not have been a need to implement a quota system if it was not for the “barbaric system of apartheid.”
The chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sport called for restraint, saying the incident must be addressed urgently as it is stirring up emotions.
SuperSport CEO, Gideon Kobane, on Monday said they will continue engaging all parties involved.
“This has become a national issue. We take this incident with a seriousness it deserves… (but) we don’t want to rush for the sake of convenience.”
