eNCA | MPs to receive update on Gupta naturalisation
PARLIAMENT – Parliament’s Research and Legal Services are expected to give the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on update on the early naturalisation of members of the Gupta family.
In April, the committee adopted terms of reference for an inquiry into the citizenship of the Gupta family.
Minister Malusi Gigaba came under fire when it emerged he personally intervened to help the Guptas with their naturalisation certificates in 2015.

The Home Affairs Department has repeatedly defended Gigaba, saying he had done nothing wrong.
In March, Gigaba was left red-faced after he told journalists none of the Guptas was a South African citizen.
A day later, the Independent Electoral Commission confirmed Atul Gupta is a registered voter.
The committee will also on Tuesday discuss amendments to Section 34 of the Immigration Act which relates to foreigners’ rights when being detained.
In April, MPs lashed out at the Home Affairs Department for being slow to implement a 2017 Constitutional Court ruling that declared the section inconsistent with the Constitution.
The ConCourt said foreigners who are detained have a right to be automatically brought before a court within 48 hours in order for the court to confirm whether their detentions are legal, which is the case for other detained people.
