The Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science is a research-intensive department and has excellent research facilities and equipment. The Department offers service modules in general chemistry to students from different programmes, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in chemistry and polymer science. As part of our commitment to Stellenbosch University’s multilingual language policy, the first-year classes are presented in both English and Afrikaans. We are seeking a dynamic person who can contribute to the teaching of first year general chemistry in both English and Afrikaans as well as second year analytical chemistry. The incumbent will take a leading role in the first-year chemistry teaching team and will fully oversee the practical component of the first-year course. As a research-intensive department, there is an expectation that the incumbent will be engaged in academic research in their area of expertise, which may include research in chemical education.
Duties:
- Teaching first-year general chemistry and analytical chemistry (at least at the second-year level) in both English and Afrikaans;
- A leading role within the first-year chemistry teaching team for the development and coordination of the practical component of the first-year course;
- Academic research within one of the existing research groups in the department in their area of expertise, which may include research in chemical education;
- Assisting with Departmental and Faculty responsibilities and duties as needed.
Requirements:
- Minimum: PhD degree in any area of chemistry;
- Ability to teach second year analytical chemistry;
- Evidence of excellence in teaching;
- Evidence of engagement with best practices in teaching;
- Evidence of research and publication in any relevant area of research within chemistry;
- Ability to communicate and teach effectively in both English and Afrikaans.
Recommendations:
- Evidence of research experience in chemistry education or analytical chemistry;
- A track record of publications in high impact international journals.
