Pharmacist Assistant (chru)
A Pharmacist Assistant vacancy is available at our Client Wits Health Consortium’s Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) in Port Elizabeth – Eastern Cape.
Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC“) is a wholly owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.
The Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) was initiated in 1998 by Professor Ian Sanne, under the auspices of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). Today the CHRU is an HIV/AIDS, TB and Cervical Cancer research syndicate of the Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (WHC), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of WITS.
The CHRU is proudly the first International Clinical Research Site (CRS) of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). To date it remains one of the most successful international sites within the ACTG. The site is substantially funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and USAID/PEPFAR.
Based at the Helen Joseph Academic Hospital in Johannesburg, the CHRU conducts research into HIV-AIDs, carrying out clinical trials that encompass associated dread diseases (TB, Cervical Cancer and other opportunistic infections) and provides technical expertise and assistance, training of health care personnel, quality assurance assessments of sites, and clinical support services.
Main purpose of the job
- To assist with the management of pharmacy related elements of relevant projects and the effective management, monitoring and recording of the dispensing of study protocols in line with the SOPs and GPP
Location
- Isango Lethemba Research Unit, Empilweni TB Hospital, Port Elizabeth
Key performance areas
- Assist pharmacists by screening and preparation of prescriptions. Correctly and accurately pick drugs, monitor and record drugs dispensed when processing prescriptions, label medication containers correctly and completely and ensure that prepared medication has been checked and signed by supervising/ responsible pharmacist
- Count or measure all patient returns and accurately calculate compliance
- When required issue medication to patients and counsel/ instruct patients on the correct use of drugs being prescribed, stressing the importance of following these instructions and taking any required corrective actions where problems have been identified
- Procurement of medication, general supplies and stationery using the procurement system under the supervision of a pharmacist and in compliance with the WHC procurement procedures
- To ensure that all inventory, general supplies and stationery is received upon delivery, stored appropriately and unpacked as soon as possible to ensure that the general appearance of the pharmacy is kept neat and tidy
- Maintains a high standard of quality control by ensuring that all temperatures are logged every day and that any irregularities are immediately reported to the supervising/responsible pharmacist and pharmacy management
- Stock management for medication, stationery and general supplies under the supervision of a pharmacist, including ordering, receipt, unpacking, recording on bin cards and inventory system, dispensing and destruction
- Ensure effective FIFO stock management as well as completing all stock related entries of received stock immediately
- Assist with mandatory monthly stock take
- General pharmacy and research or program related administrative duties and timeous and accurate housekeeping of records and files for the pharmacy and/ or applicable trials/program
- Report issues to Supervising/Responsible Pharmacist and where applicable to the Assistant Pharmacy Manager/s or Pharmacy Manager
Required minimum education and training
- Pharmacy assistant training course completed at post basic level or pharmacy technician qualification
Professional body registration
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council
Required minimum work experience
- 3-5 years’ Pharmacy Assistant experience
- Previous experience in data coordination and team member coordination
- Previous experience in pharmacy related tasks
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- Exceptional organizational and administrative skills
- Excellent checking and QC skills
- MS Office proficiency
- Good clinical practice (GCP) certification.
- Ensuring strict compliance to GCP and GPP
- Experience in clinical trials
