Job description
The Mercury has an exciting and challenging vacancy for a News Editor. The successful incumbent will be responsible for the planning and strategising of content and includes managing a team of staff in the delivery of content for use across multi platforms, multi media and across verticals (print & digital).
The successful incumbent will be responsible for:
- Identifying, planning and driving content for the group
- Recommending strategies aimed at growing our online audience, presence and reputation
- Achieving and maintaining quality of all content
- Meet the deadline demands across various streams
- Managing a team of staff
- The quality, look and design across all titles and platforms within the group
- Establish a superior network of contacts
- Diary Planning
- Managing the Newsroom
- Developing staff
- Project a positive image of the title
- And any other functions as an when required
Minimum Requirements:
- Must have tertiary qualification in journalism or equivalent experience
- Must have at least 8 years extensive senior journalistic experience in a newsroom environment of which 4 years must be that of managing & leading a team of newsroom staff.
- Have a sharp news sense with good general knowledge
- A thorough understanding of issues affecting Durban, KZN & SA
- The ability to make critical and valid news judgments
- Must have a good knowledge of the legalities affecting journalism
- Must be computer literate in MS Office, One View & Baobab
- Must be able to rewrite copy
- Must have a valid driver’s licence with own transport
