SuperSport United development coach Kwanele Kopo believes Gavin Hunt’s trophy-laden career provides strong evidence that he’ll bring silverware to Kaizer Chiefs.
Hunt was appointed Amakhosi’s new head coach this week, following the departure of Ernst Middendorp, and Chiefs fans are hoping the former Bidvest Wits boss will bring an end to their trophy drought.
Kopo, who worked alongside Hunt during his time at SuperSport, has backed his former colleague to succeed at Naturena.
“Hey I don’t know, it’s difficult to say you know, there’s no crystal ball for success with any coach for any club,” Kopo told KickOff.
“But history says that wherever he’s been, he’s been successful. And I guess his future employment is always based on that. I think that’s the biggest attraction for anyone.
“History says that, after his start at Black Leopards, Swallows, he came to SuperSport and won three league titles, a couple of trophies. He came to Wits where I don’t think anybody would have thought of Wits winning the league, he won the league.
“So from a profile perspective he is a coach that you would refer to as a title-winning coach. He is a coach that is capable of winning trophies. Environments may be able to assist in that process.
“But I think to doubt Gavin… for me personally, I know Gavin, I’ve worked with him and I have no doubts about his capabilities as a coach and as a successful coach.
“If you have to judge it on probability, well probability says he’s won the league in his last two clubs. He might win the league with the next club. But like I said, environment must also play a part.
“Gavin on his own is capable of winning the league. Ya I think Gavin, Pitso [Mosimane]… nobody will doubt those two coaches in terms of competing for the league.”
