Golden Arrows held defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in their DStv Premiership encounter at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium outside Durban on Saturday.
AS IT HAPPENED | Golden Arrows v Mamelodi Sundowns
Masandawana enjoyed most of the possession in the opening 10 minutes and probed away at the Arrows defence, but the hosts did well to keep the league leaders at bay.
Sundowns finally made the breakthrough via a set-piece in the 17th minute. A Lyle Lakay corner found Mothibi Mvala, who rose high to head home on his debut for the Brazilians.
Five minutes later the scoreline was level again as Abafana Bes’thende found their equaliser. Pule Mmodi and Ntsako Makhubela combined before crossing for Michael Gumede who headed home to level matters.
It was quite the physical affair as the midfield battle heated up with the score tied once more.
Just shy of the hour mark, Peter Shalulile had a go from the edge of the Arrows box but the Sundowns striker hit it across the face of the goal and wide.
In the latter stages of the second half, Arrows did well to keep Sundowns under some pressure and took their shots when the opportunity presented itself.
Both sides defended well as the game drew to a close and earned a point each as the spoils were shared.
Sundowns remain top of the standings with 18 points after eight games, while Arrows moved up to fifth with 12 points from eight games.
