Studies of blood taken from 44 people who previously had Covid-19, show that their antibodies are much less effective against 501Y.V2.

This was what was said in a presentation on Thursday by Professor Penny Moore, the South African Research Chairs Initiative (Sarchi) chairperson of viral host dynamics (virology) at the University of the Witwatersrand.

“The question is whether [the antibodies of] people who were infected with the original variant…are able to recognise 501Y.V2,” she said.

This will have implications on their ability to  resist reinfection, Moore said.

“The question is whether people who were infected with the original variant’s… antibodies are able to recognise 501Y.V2,” she said.

She was speaking during a webinar on the Covid-19 vaccine rollout and the impact of the variant.

The 501Y.V2 variant was first discovered in South Africa in 2020 by a geonomics team led by the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (Krisp) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. 

News24 earlier reported that since the end of September, they noticed the rapid spread of the new variant , which had between 10 and 20 new mutations.

Moore said that they took samples from 44 convalescent donors who had Covid-19 during the first wave of infections in the country.

“So they had been infected with the original variant. We took all of these 44 samples and we tested their ability to neutralise the new variant, 501Y.V2,” she said.

It was found that all of these 44 individuals had antibodies that were able to neutralise the original virus but 48% of them showed no activity whatsoever against 501Y.V2.

What does this suggest?

“Those 48% [at least] might be susceptible to reinfection of 501Y.V2.”

Moore said that the notion that SARS-CoV-2 would be eradicated was probably not realistic.

“It may turn into a situation where we have to update our vaccines periodically,” she said.

This comes after a question was raised about whether people would need to be vaccinated every year.

“I think it is very possible that we are looking at a situation where we will have to update the vaccines as new variants emerge.

“I think if we can get the number of infections down worldwide, then few of those variants will emerge – but they are always going to emerge,” Moore warned.

26 February 2021 – Trade Statistics for January 2021

Pretoria, 26 February 2021 – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) today releases trade statistics for January 2021 recording a trade balance surplus of R11.83 billion. These statistics include trade data with Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia (BELN). The year-to-date (01 January to 31 January 2021) trade surplus of R11.83 billion is an improvement from the R2.70 billion deficit for the comparable period in 2020. Exports increased by 8.7% year-on-year whilst imports decreased by 5.5% over the same period.


Including trade data with Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia (BELN)

The R11.83 billion trade surplus for January 2021 is attributable to exports of R109.76 billion and imports of R97.93 billion. Exports decreased by R17.26 billion (13.6%) between December 2020 and January 2021 and imports increased by R3.98 billion (4.2%) over the same period.

  • ANC MP Bongani Bongo has been acquitted of corruption charges.
  • The charges emanated from an accusation that Bongo had tried to bribe a parliamentary official to collapse a 2017 inquiry into Eskom.
  • The National Prosecuting Authority says it will study the judgment before deciding on a way forward.

ANC MP Bongani Bongo has succeeded in having the corruption case against him dismissed in the Western Cape High Court.

In reaction, Bongo said it was a political “gimmick” from the start.

On Friday, Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe granted Bongo’s Section 174 application to have the case dismissed based on evidence presented, and acquitted him of the charges.

Bongo maintained his innocence and denied an accusation that he had tried to disrupt a parliamentary inquiry into state capture at Eskom on 10 October 2017 by allegedly trying to bribe Ntuthuzelo Vanara, evidence leader at the Eskom inquiry.

In his initial affidavit, Vanara claimed Bongo had asked him to fake an illness and take sick leave because the inquiry would not have proceeded in his absence.

Hlophe said Vanara, the State’s star witness, was not credible in “some respects”.

“The evidence does not corroborate. There are serious contradictions. The application cannot be refused hoping that the accused [Bongo] will incriminate himself. [Other witnesses] can only attest to what Mr Vanara had told them. His credibility has been placed in question as witness testimonies are clashing,” Hlophe said.

In 2017, former president Jacob Zuma announced an inquiry into the power utility following several allegations of corruption.

In his initial affidavit, Vanara claimed Bongo had offered him a cash bribe. All Vanara allegedly had to do was “name the price” and explain to Bongo how he would help to stop the inquiry. Bongo would, in turn, go back to the “Eskom people” and explain Vanara’s plan to stop the inquiry and the price they would have to pay for his (Vanara’s) assistance.

Money would then be given to Bongo, who would hand it over to Vanara, the State alleged.

On Wednesday, the court heard a Section 174 application to dismiss the case, based on the evidence presented so far.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it took note of the decision and would study the judgment before considering its options.

The Bulls on Friday unveiled their new kit for the 2021 rugby season.

The team’s sponsors, PUMA, opted for a blue coloured home jersey resembling the one the Blue Bulls played in when they famously upset the British & Irish Lions 35-30 at Loftus Versfeld in 1997.

The Bulls’ will play in this kit until May 2022, including in the preparation series which kicks off this weekend.

The men from Pretoria will also sport the jersey when they compete in the inaugural PRO16 Rainbow Cup in Europe, as well as the Currie Cup later in the year.

“We decided on a jersey in a blue which matches that from the historic win and which will serve to reignite the same ’97 passion,” Brett Bellinger, marketing director of PUMA South Africa, said in a statement.

“The #TrueToTheBlue jersey will be sported by the team in their first foray into Europe and during local competitions. It will also be worn for the repeat match if the Bulls versus the British & Irish Lions goes ahead this year. It’s time to let the competitors know what it really means to have blue blood.”

Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone commented: “PUMA have once again outdone themselves with an amazing jersey design, one that will resonate with all of our fans both from a historic perspective and with our newer audience. This also makes a bold statement as we venture into the northern hemisphere that no matter where we go or what we become the true essence of the Bulls will always remain blue.”

Bulls director of rugby Jake White added: “It will be our jersey for the next few years. It’s about going back to our roots. The history of this union is something that’s become very important for us. Hopefully, even though we’re going to start playing in this jersey only in a preparation series, it’s an opportunity to expose our youngsters to the culture and history of this team.

“We’re hoping that it’s a jersey that shows all the players what a privilege it is to play for this team. There’s a long history of brilliant Springboks who pulled the Bulls jersey over their head.

“The jersey for me is incredibly important. A lot of thought and work went into it in terms of design. As everyone knows, I’m a traditionalist. Even the pants and socks are important. I’m hoping the youngsters appreciate the fact that they’ll be the first to wear this new jersey.

“It’s not going to the Springboks who played in the Currie Cup final, it’s given to the next generation. Hopefully that bodes well for us going forward.”

SO WHAT IS A TEAM LEAD OF DIGITAL MEDIA STRATEGY?

The Digital Media Strategy Team Lead  is responsible for delivering a consistent gold standard media planning & buying service for the business, ensuring the highest possible return on investment for Incubeta which contributes to increasing market penetration and competitive presence.

In more simple words, the Digital Media Strategy Team Lead will be responsible for building and managing a team aimed at developing clients digital media strategies and associated media plans. There is also a need to present and report back on the performance of these digital media strategies and media plans to clients as well as internal Incubeta teams. TASKS
