Sport24.co.za | Proteas: Du Plessis dynasty in full bloom
Durban – In the recently-completed Test series against Pakistan, Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis quietly went about notching up a significant milestone.
In the second Test at Newlands in Cape Town, Du Plessis skippered South Africa for the 27th time in his Test career.
It put him one ahead of Shaun Pollock, who captained the Proteas 26 times, and third on that list behind Graeme Smith (108) and Hansie Cronje (53).
Having captained the Proteas in Test cricket for the first time in August, 2016 after AB de Villiers stepped down from his own brief stint in charge, Du Plessis has grown into the role as the years have passed.
While his leadership qualities have been praised both inside and outside of the South African dressing room, on Friday at Kingsmead Du Plessis showed that he is far more than merely a captain.
His knock of 90 will not be one that we speak about often in the years to come, but in the context of this Test match it was key.
South Africa lost their last five wickets for just eight runs to be dismissed for 259 in their second innings, setting Sri Lanka a target of 304 to win.
That is still likely to be enough, but it should have been a lot more and had Du Plessis not come to the party, Sri Lanka might very well be within striking distance of taking a shock 1-0 lead into the second and final Test in Port Elizabeth.
Du Plessis, in familiar fashion, was a pillar for the Proteas.
He is seldom easy on the eye when it comes to his Test approach, but his dogged mentality and seasoned technique combine to make him a very difficult batsman to get out.
On Friday, in fact, Du Plessis got himself out.
Vishwa Fernando, impressive throughout the contest with eight wickets to his name, went around the wicket and angled one in towards the stumps that did nothing off the wicket.
Du Plessis, 90* at the time having batted for four testing hours, offered no shot and was rapped on the pads and given out LBW.
The skipper was visibly gutted at missing out on a 10th Test ton – it would have also been his second in as many Tests – but he would have been even more upset at doing all the hard work and then not being able to bat South Africa into an unassailable position.
Du Plessis had shared in a 96-run stand with the fluent Quinton de Kock for the fifth wicket, and in doing so he displayed a flexibility and ability to play the situations that suggest he would be more than comfortable in taking on the all-important No 4 role in this Test side.
With De Kock scoring relatively freely from one end, Du Plessis provided stable support from the other.
Yet, when De Kock was out for 55, Du Plessis was able to accelerate to ensure that the Proteas kept taking the game forward.
With 33 wickets having fallen in three days so far, batting has not been easy on this slow Kingsmead strip while Sri Lanka have surprised and have been in with a shout throughout.
On Friday, the hosts needed somebody in their frail top order to stand up and be counted. Du Plessis was that man.
He is not always front and centre when it comes to blazing knocks in the format, but Du Plessis averages 44.07 as a Test captain and he has never lost a series at home.
At 34, it is not clear how much longer he will be around for.
But, before he does call it quits, Du Plessis has three very important assignments remaining as skipper.
He desperately wants to take the Proteas back to No 1 in the Test rankings, he will try and guide South Africa to a first ever World Cup crown later this year and there is an ICC World T20 next year.
For now, South African cricket seems to be in good hands.
News24.com | Man arrested for murder of his lover, cutting off her ears
A three-day manhunt led to the arrest of a man who was wanted in connection with the murder of his lover earlier this week.
The woman’s body was found in Soul City informal settlement in Kagiso on the West Rand on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said police responded to a scene where they found the body of a woman, who had been stabbed multiple times in her neck and upper right arm. Her ears had been cut off.
Investigations led them to the woman’s lover on Friday.
The man was arrested at a local shebeen and, in addition to the murder charge, he will face additional charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
He is expected to appear in the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court soon.

Station commander of Kagiso police station, Brigadier Themba Maduna said they would not allow lawlessness where women and children were victims of severe brutality.
“We will act harshly to those who do not have respect for life,” he added.
On Wednesday, West Rand police arrested 14 people, including Basotho nationals, following the discovery of a woman’s mutilated body.
The 14 people were arrested for various offences during a confrontation about the discovery of the body.
“Residents then believed that the Basotho nationals were responsible for the death of the woman. Angry residents then charged at the group and a shootout ensued,” Sibiya said at the time.
Health24.com | Everything you should know before trying a plant-based diet
Plant-based diets have been around forever, but the term is gaining serious traction in 2019. Between #plantbased sweet potato nachos piled with colourful veggies taking over Instagram and Beyoncé offering up free concert tickets to fans who adopt more plant-focused habits, there’s never been a more popular time to move toward plant-based eating.
Plant-based isn’t the same as vegan
Obviously, a plant-based diet means prioritising plant foods. But there’s plenty of nuance (and individual flexibility) when it comes to plant-based eating.
“A plant-based diet means eating primarily whole plant foods rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, and healthy fats,” says Alexis Joseph, a registered dietitian, who writes the popular Hummusapien blog. In other words, the majority of your diet comes from minimally processed fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
Veganism is one form of a plant-based diet, but it isn’t the only one. While a vegan diet cuts out all animal products, a plant-based diet isn’t so restrictive. (On the flipside, not all vegan foods are inherently plant-based: an egg-free brownie may be vegan, but if it’s packed with processed ingredients, it’s not quite a plant-based treat.)
“I consider myself plant-based because most of the foods I eat are plant-based,” says Joseph. “That said, I also eat yogurt, cheese, eggs, and fish when I feel like it, and that’s okay!”
“Think about plant-based eating as a template that encourages more plant foods, instead of as a restrictive diet that makes things off-limits,” says Dr David Levitsky, professor of nutrition and psychology at Cornell University.
For many people, this can be a healthier approach. “I used to feel like a fraud when I craved foods that weren’t vegan, and looking back, that was disordered behaviour,” says Joseph. “I now honour my cravings and fuel myself accordingly, and that looks different every day.”

People choose to eat plant-based foods for a number of reasons
First of all, there are plenty of health benefits. “A plant-based diet is centred around vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, and pulses,” says Amy Gorin, registered dietitian and owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area. Basically, all foods filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fibre.
Joseph echoes this sentiment. “Plant foods are packed with fibre and phytonutrients that support immunity, combat inflammation, and feed the healthy bacteria in your gut,” she says.
Swapping plant protein for animal protein has benefits, too. “Regularly consuming foods high in plant protein versus animal protein can help prevent and reverse a slew of chronic conditions, including diabetes and heart disease,” says Joseph, who adds that the nutrients in plants help support healthy cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.
Another major reason people choose a plant-based eating style? Cutting back on animal products has significant environmental benefits. ”Eating more plant foods reduces your carbon footprint since livestock production is responsible for a good portion of global greenhouse gas emissions,” says Joseph. Plus, “twenty servings of vegetables have fewer greenhouse emissions than one serving of meat, with beef and lamb having the highest emissions,” she says.
Others opt for a plant-based diet to help with weight loss, which could work for you if you keep your calories in check. Plant foods are high in filling fibre and low in calorie-dense saturated fats. But as Levitsky points out, the only way to lose weight is to consume fewer calories than you burn, often referred to as a calorie deficit.

Yes, it’s possible to get enough nutrients from plants
One common criticism of primarily plant-based diets is that it’s tough to get adequate nutrients – especially protein and omega-3s. Well, it’s totally doable. “You may just need to think outside of the box at times,” says Gorin.
To maximise your protein, she recommends adding nutritional yeast to pasta in place of grated cheese, blending white beans or chickpeas into smoothies, and eating nuts and nut butters on their own or in various sweet and savoury recipes. A wide scope is important here since plants contain incomplete proteins (while animal products contain complete proteins). Eating plant-based protein from several different sources will help ensure you’re getting all the amino acids you need to support healthy body functions.
Joseph says not to stress too much about getting enough protein, though. “It’s important to note that protein isn’t just found in meat,” she says.
“A whole food, plant based-diet that’s well balanced with beans, legumes, whole grains, fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds can easily provide your recommended daily allowance of nutrients like calcium and protein.”
Just be sure you’re eating plenty of these whole foods, as opposed to relying on processed foods for your calories.
Eat a wide mix
Another thing to keep in mind if you’re eating a plant-based diet? Iron. “Your body absorbs haeme iron, the type of iron found in animal products, more easily than it does plant-based iron like the iron found in spinach and tomato,” says Gorin. To aid the absorption of plant-based iron, she suggests pairing it with a source of vitamin C. Example: “Squeeze some lemon juice onto a green spinach salad.”
Eating a wide mix of plant-based foods is another simple way to help make sure you’re getting the nutrients you need. “Deficiencies rarely occur when you eat a variety of plants,” says Levitsky.
Gorin adds that taking supplements can be helpful on a plant-based diet.
“You may want to consider a vitamin B12 supplement since many sources of this vitamin are animal-based. You may also want to consider an EPA/DHA omega-3 supplement. These omega-3s would typically come from fatty fish, but vegan algae-based supplements exist. I take these myself!”
But a plant-based diet isn’t always a healthy choice
Plant-based eating is a safe and healthy choice for the majority of people, but you should always talk with your doctor or registered dietitian before making big changes to your diet.
In Joseph’s experience, she notes that “anyone with a history of eating disorder or disordered eating shouldn’t follow a diet that eliminates food groups, as a plant-based diet in the wrong hands can be abused as another restriction diet”.
If you fall into this category, you can experiment with plant-based recipes, but should probably steer clear of any strict food rules, restrictions, or labels on your eating habits.

If you’re new to plant-based eating, take things one step at a time
“I always recommend starting small,” says Joseph. “Overturning your entire diet in a day is overwhelming and lessens the likelihood of you sticking with it. Instead of jumping to extremes, pick two small changes to implement each week.” She suggests swapping cow’s milk for an unsweetened dairy-free milk as a first step.
And, remember that a plant-based diet doesn’t mean you can never eat animal products. “Think about how you can enhance your diet without focusing so much on taking things away,” says Joseph. “Research suggests that following a flexitarian diet (increasing plant-based foods and reducing but not eliminating animal foods) yields similar health benefits like reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes.”
The Meatless Monday campaign is popular for a reason. Cutting out meat (and all animal products, if you choose) is relatively easy for one day of the week. According to Joseph, this alone can have a profound impact on the environment – and on your overall health.
Bottom line: Think of plant-based eating as a template that encourages more whole plant foods, instead of as a restrictive diet that makes things off limits.

News24.com | Naka Drotské is ‘living life to the full’
There was a time when he didn’t want to live anymore.
He’s not embarrassed to admit it. After being shot in a home invasion and spending weeks in hospital at death’s door, he was ready to give up.
That was two months ago. Now Naka Drotské (48), hooker of the legendary 1995 Springbok rugby team, is delighted to be alive. And he’s making the most of each day.
It’s been more than 10 weeks since robbers struck at his brother Tinus’ smallholding in Kameeldrift, Pretoria. Naka is still amazed that he’s lived to tell the tale.
When YOU spoke to him after the incident, he was much less positive about his prospects. “Within days [after the attack] I’d lost my fighting spirit. Without fully knowing what I was saying, I begged God to come take me.”
After a setback – he got pneumonia and sepsis and was put on a ventilator – his spirits hit rock bottom. Unsure whether the former Bok was going to pull through, doctors called his family to the hospital.
But now Naka is in better shape than ever, his wife, Marzanne (42), assured YOU on the phone on Thursday.
“In life you have a choice: you can be the victim or victor. With God in our life, my family and I are grateful to say we choose to be victors every day from now on,” she said.
Naka is receiving physiotherapy to regain the full use of his right arm. But the wound drain he’s had attached to him is long forgotten. So are the plaster cast, stitches and dark moods he suffered after the attack.
“The physiotherapist is happy with Naka’s progress,” Marzanne says. “The bullet that penetrated his arm caused a lot of damage and full recovery will take a lot of time and effort.”
Naka is positive and facing each day with renewed courage and vigour, she says.
“Six weeks on antibiotics caused him to lose weight and he’s a bit skinny but we’re working on it. For the most part, our lives are back to normal – yet two months ago we didn’t imagine ever reaching this point.”
Since he’s arrived home on 6 January, Naka has also been receiving trauma counselling.
But Marzanne says neither of them have symptoms of trauma or anxiety related to the incident.
“It’s a miracle. He has no anxiety, no nightmares, flashbacks or night-time terror. We were warned it could return at a later stage . . . But we’re hopeful it won’t.
“The time in hospital, being connected to all those machines, was almost worse for Naka than the actual shooting.
“It really helped to talk about it so soon after getting home. He’d tell people the story in the greatest detail – I believe that’s what helped him heal emotionally.
“Now we’ve put it behind us. We’re just so grateful he’s alive.”
Thankfully, Naka’s sons, Allen (15) and Tristan (11), and Marzanne’s daughters, Jeazanne (19) and Annica (15), also seemed to have been spared the effects of post-traumatic stress.
“The kids are fine – we’re very grateful for that,” Marzanne says. “We were especially worried the boys would be scared when they get back from America [where they’d been visiting their mom, Liske, when the incident happened]. But they do realise that these things happen everywhere. They know we’re lucky still to be intact as a family.”
Kameeldrift police confirmed to YOU that no arrests have been made. The investigation continues.
