News24.com | At least 200 left homeless in Wupperthal after another Western Cape fire
Forty-five houses have been left gutted, leaving at least 200 people homeless, following a devastating fire which swept through historic Wuppertal in the Western Cape.
The small Cederberg town saw its Moravian Mission Station, clinic and town hall completely destroyed this past weekend.
“The emergency care personnel and ambulances from the Western Cape government assisted the fire victims throughout the night and have been placed on standby to assist where required,” said the City of Cape Town’s Wilfred Solomons-Johannes.
Solomons-Johannes said the telecommunications infrastructure had been completely destroyed, leaving the community unable to communicate efficiently.
It is understood that the provincial disaster management centre will on Monday make an aerial assessment to determine the extent of the damage.
“That will be while health officials assist with the dispensing of medication, especially for the aged and frail care as many of the people living in the Wupperthal town are old people,” Solomons-Johannes added.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has been informed of the situation in order to assist with the provision of clothes, tents and food.
“The assistance from neighbouring towns and municipalities of Clanwilliam, Piketberg, Vredenburg, Malmesbury (Swartland), Cederberg, Matzikama and Bergriver is much appreciated in attempts to bring the raging blaze under control control,” Solomons-Johannes added.
Sport24.co.za | Australia a ‘soap opera’ and ‘I feel like a director’
Melbourne – Australia cricket coach Justin Langer admitted on Monday he feels like a “director of a soap opera” as speculation grew around the future of banned Steve Smith and David Warner.
Debate about the pair reared again during the third Test against India in Melbourne, after Smith and Cameron Bancroft gave television interviews about the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March.
Their comments were widely interpreted as deflecting all blame onto Warner, with some former players slamming them for unnecessarily dredging it back up on Boxing Day, the most revered day in the Australian cricket calendar.
Australia’s woeful batting in the match, which they lost by 137 runs, also focused attention on how much Smith and Warner were missed.
Langer, who has previously described the Australia team as a “dysfunctional family”, said the headlines were yet another headache.
“It’s all just part of the soap opera we’re in every day,” he said in Melbourne before heading to Sydney for Thursday’s fourth and final Test, with India leading the series 2-1.
“I feel like a director of a soap opera at the moment, I honestly do.
“Coaching is about man management and looking after people, caring for people, and that was just another distraction last week,” he added.
Bancroft, who was banned for nine months, made his return on Sunday evening for the Perch Scorchers in the Big Bash League, but only lasted three balls. Smith and Warner’s suspensions run out in late March.
Captain Tim Paine admitted on Sunday it was “pretty clear” they were being missed, with no batsmen other than tail ender Pat Cummins scoring more than 50 in Melbourne.
Langer said cricket authorities were “in touch with the boys all the time”.
“There’s a really good process we’re going to go through to get the boys back into the team,” he added of the trio.
They could possibly return for a one-day international in late March, when Australia have pencilled in a series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
According to the Cricket Australia website, the series was tentatively set for March 15-29, but Pakistan have reportedly proposed pushing it back to March 31-April 13.
Smith and Warner’s exile has left a big void in the Test team.
Aaron Finch has been unable to reproduce his limited overs form in the red ball game, Usman Khawaja has struggled and newcomer Marcus Harris at the top of the order is yet to post a big score.
“We’ve got a lot of guys learning on the run at the same time,” said Langer, acknowledging a lack of experience. “That’s not easy for them, but we’ll collectively be better for it over time.”
Langer, a former opener who played 105 Tests and earned a reputation as a fighter, pointed to India’s Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli as the consummate Test batsmen who Australia should be looking to emulate.
“Probably at this time the difference in the series has been Pujara and Kohli. Pujara averages 53 and Kohli 45 or 46. The lesson we learn from that is keep absorbing the pressure,” he said.
“We have one of the best bowling attacks in the world and they keep rocking up and absorbing the pressure. Our guys are learning that, or hopefully they are learning that.”

Health24.com | Make nice with rice to boost your diet
If you love rice, you might be wondering how you can make it part of healthy meals. Whether you’re trying to drop pounds or stay at a healthy weight, some adjustments will let you keep it on the menu.
Rice belongs to the grain family. While grains are an important part of your overall diet, standard white rice isn’t a nutritious choice – it’s not a whole grain. What’s more, it’s a food that has 200 calories per cup, so you want to make sure that you maximise nutrients as well as flavour.
Turn rice into a meal
First, opt for brown rice, the whole-grain form, as often as possible. White rice has gone through a process that removes its fibre and many of its nutrients, including protein, iron and some B vitamins.
There are many types – and colours – of whole grain rice to sample, including brown basmati, red rice, purple Thai and Chinese black rice. Popular Wehani rice is a whole grain, reddish-brown American hybrid of basmati and brown rices. Note that wild rice is another tasty choice, though technically it’s not a rice, but rather a semi-aquatic grass. It makes a great medley when mixed with brown rice.
Also experiment with different ways to turn rice into a meal rather than a side dish. For lunch or a cold supper, load a whole-wheat pita pocket with cooked and cooled rice and chopped vegetables and top with a light vinaigrette.
Or try a cold rice salad for a to-go meal. For your protein, add in chunks of turkey, chicken, tofu or nuts, then blend in a handful of dried raisins or cranberries and a sprinkling of seasonings.
You can even get creative and make homemade sushi rolls at home. Use avocado and cucumber if you’re not a fan of raw fish.
Baked with milk, eggs, vanilla, a small amount of sweetener and cinnamon, brown rice can even make a healthy version of rice pudding for dessert or even breakfast.

News24.com | Police uncover R1.5m stash in Durban flat
A 53-year-old man is expected to appear in court on Monday after allegedly running a drug laboratory from an apartment in Umhlanga Rocks, Durban.
Mandrax and heroin with a street value of R1.5m was found on the premises.
The arrest followed a raid on the premises on Friday night by various police units, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said in a statement.
The man was apparently arrested after police followed up on information. He was then taken back to the flat, which was also searched.
Zwane said the flat is believed to be used for the packaging and storage of drugs.
On December 10, the Hawks arrested seven suspects on drug-related charges.
News24 reported that the suspects, aged between 20 and 60, were arrested at a Tafelsig house in Cape Town. Dagga and mandrax tablets valued at over R500 000 were discovered.
The drugs were found buried underground in a trunk in the parking area. More drugs and cash were found in a safe, concealed behind a painting on the wall.
