Like most new moms, Kate Hudson has been on a long break from the gym to focus on her new baby and find a routine that works for her and her growing family. But now, she’s ready to get back to business and took to Instagram to share her fitness goals with her followers. (Here are 15 times Kate Hudson proved that she’s the definition of #Fitspiration.)
“The routine with our baby is getting more familiar and I’m ready to start taking a little time in the day focusing on myself,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself in a sports bra and leggings. “For me, that means my health,” she continued. “Why? Because I wanna be around a long time for these three kiddos of mine.”

That said, the actress quickly noted that she knows how tough it can be to juggle being a new mom, taking care of your family, taking care of yourself, and keeping up with your job.
“I know that some are curious about what that means and for all you moms (whether working or not working moms) it is the most challenging thing in the world to balance kids and personal time,” she wrote. “Let’s be honest, kids take the number one position and it’s haaaaard to make the time for yourself.” (P.S. Here are six things you can learn from her book about self-love.)
That’s why Hudson vows to do the best she can with an end goal in mind. “I am on a mission right now to get back to my fighting weight and my strong body/mind back,” she wrote, adding that she hopes to lose 25 pounds by spring when she begins filming a new movie. Her game plan? “I’d like to try new workouts and eat as healthy as I can,” she wrote. “I wanna do all this and keep up milk production, raise my kids, work every day, make time for my man, have girlfriend time and stay sane!” she joked.
Hudson’s celeb friends were the first to cheer her on for her raw and inspirational post. “Thank you, angel,” commented soon-to-be-mom Amy Schumer. “This is awesome, Kate. I love it,” added Chelsea Handler.
Supermodel Cindy Crawford also thanked Hudson for her realness and shared some real talk of her own. “Remember—it took 9 months to put the weight on so give your body time to get back to your ‘fighting’ weight,” she commented, before adding, “You look beautiful at every weight!”
While Hudson’s efforts to get fit again post-pregnancy are admirable, Crawford has a point: Losing the baby weight takes time, and it can be ridiculous that society expects women to return to their pre-pregnancy selves in five minutes flat. (Read Keira Knightley’s essay about the reality of childbirth to truly understand just how crazy it is.)
Whether Hudson meets her goal or not, there’s one thing for sure: Motherhood looks damn good on her.

The Gauteng government has poured cold water over the DA’s latest scorecard for departments in the province.
Spokesperson Thabo Masebe said the provincial government didn’t believe in the opposition party scorecard, saying premier David Makhura preferred evidence.
“The premier believes in evidence that speaks for itself. Work has been done and what was meant to be done has been done. Evidence is there for everyone to see,” said Masebe.
Gauteng premier candidate Solly Msimanga, announced that the poorest-performing departments were health and human settlements, cooperative governance and traditional affairs, which each scored 1 out of 10.
The highest-performing department was education, led by MEC Panyaza Lesufi, which cored 7.5/10.
MECs for social development and community safety, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza and Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, each received a 2/10.
The departments of economic development and sports, recreation, arts and culture each scored 3/10. Makhura’s department, together with the departments of infrastructure development and finance scored 4/10, followed by roads and transport, which received 5/10.

Turn a blind eye
Msimanga said Makhura has insisted time and time again since 2014 that e-tolls must go and even established a commission. However, he said he has not told both ministers of transport and finance to renew the collection contract when it comes to an end.
“If he were seriously on the side of the people, he would have used his so-called conviction to stand up to what is evidently wrong,” said Msimanga.

He added that under Makhura’s watch, he lacked the conviction to act against errant mayors and officials that have run the Emfuleni, Merafong and West Rand District municipalities into the ground.
“These municipalities stand testament to failing ANC governance. Instead of taking action, the premier shields those who have meted out cruelty to our people,” he said.
“One need to look no further than the murderous former health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu – the architect of the Esidimeni tragedy, allegedly corrupt Brian Hlongwa who bankrupted the Gauteng health department and the failed former mayor of Emfuleni, Simon Mofokeng.
“These individuals remain members of the party’s provincial decision-making body that will impact policy choices of a failing ANC government,” he said.
Job losses
Msimanga said under Makhura’s watch, at the end of the 2017/18 financial year, 124 000 jobs were lost compared to the previous financial year.
He said the province was suffering from a serious housing, healthcare and schools backlog.
“Under the ANC’s watch, they have allowed sewage from the Emfuleni municipality to flow into the Vaal River. The raw sewage is causing severe water pollution. The drinking water is now being used to flush pollution out of the Vaal River system and, as a result, we are left with a water shortage and an impending water crisis in this province.
“This province deserves a government that possesses the political will – the will of the people, to steer us on the right track,” he added.
Praise for Makhura
The ANC in the province said it was not surprised by the DA, which chose to ignore empirical evidence confirmed by reports from credible institutions and merely relied on political thumb-sucking to develop their so-called annual scorecard.
Spokesperson Tasneem Motara says residents won’t be fooled by this latest gimmick.
Motara said there was evidence that the performance rating of the provincial government by Gauteng residents was improving steadily since 2015/16.
A survey has revealed that satisfaction with the government was at its highest level of 45% since 2011.
“Since 2014, the ANC government in Gauteng has attracted R66bn in foreign direct investment flows. Through the investment facilitation work of the InvestSA investment centre, 14 000 jobs were created in the province.
“Gauteng province leads the country in promoting intra-Africa trade. By August 2017, more than 169 Gauteng-based businesses had 365 investment projects worth R356bn across the major regions of our continent,” said Motara.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) arrested seven people allegedly linked to several muggings and attacks after the Global Citizen Festival at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
The JMPD said it understood many of the muggings reported on social media pointed to a gang of thugs attacking and robbing concert goers at or near a fuel garage, which was about 1.4 kilometres away from FNB Stadium.

Scores of concertgoers took to social media on Monday to express their dissatisfaction at security at the concert.
Some said gangs of juveniles attacked and stabbed them before robbing them of cellphones and handbags.
The City of Johannesburg’s member of mayoral committee for public safety, Michael Sun, said he was shocked to hear about the incidents and stressed that the City was talking to police to establish what happened because they were responsible for overall policing at the festival.
“We have learnt that only one incident was formally reported, which goes in stark contrast to the many reports surfacing all over media,” Sun said.
“We want to express our deepest regrets to those affected and call on the victims to come forward and report any incidents to the SAPS so investigation can be undertaken.”
Sun added that the event’s safety and security planning committee had established a “safe zone” where concertgoers should have been picked up by e-hail taxis, and said that this might not have been conducted as planned.
“It is suspected that the e-hail taxi operators may have requested some of their passengers to walk to the nearby Sasol garage to be picked up, which was outside the safe zone,” Sun said.
He said the City would assist with the police investigations.
Sun pointed out that world-renowned band Guns and Roses attracted nearly 65 000 fans to their concert at the same stadium just three days before and the event was an overall incident-free one – except for a report of suspected domestic violence.
Cape Town – The Springbok Sevens team are not dwelling on what happened in the Arabian Desert in Dubai last weekend, according to Rosko Specman in the build-up to his final tournament for the Blitzboks in Cape Town this weekend before he shifts his focus to fifteens with the Bulls.

“We did some good and bad things in Dubai, but that performance does not define us, neither will it dictate to us what we want to achieve in Cape Town this weekend,” said Specman, who will be playing in his third tournament at the Cape Town Sevens.
The Blitzbok flyer is adamant that the South Africans will be coming out with real intent and purpose, not only to prove to themselves that they are still world beaters, but also to the expected sell-out crowd at the Cape Town Stadium this weekend.
“Our focus will be on ourselves. We need to get the small things right and it starts with every player on his own.”
The winger, who scored three tries in Dubai last weekend, is not going to necessarily try and bow out in spectacular fashion
“My responsibilities are within the team and I know what my role entails,” said Specman.
“I know what I need to do inside the system and that is where my focus will be – to do my job.”
Another player keen to contribute is speedster Siviwe Soyizwapi.
“We are proud of the work we put in at training and how we perform at the tournament,” said Soyizwapi.
“Our performance in Dubai obviously was not what we stand for as a team. We will be looking at the positives though, as we are at home, playing in front of fans, family and friends.
“The tournament itself is also brilliant, with a great atmosphere, and we are keen to deliver a good performance.”
One of the highlights of the South African performance in Dubai was that of Muller du Plessis, who travelled to Dubai for the first time and scored six tries. He will also play for the Blitzboks in Cape Town for the first time.
“Yes, I am very excited about this weekend,” said Du Plessis, who matriculated in Paarl and still played for the SA Schools team last year.
“Dubai was good for me, I enjoyed it a lot and learned from the experience. Cape Town will be massive and I can’t wait.”
The hearts of women who snore appear to become damaged more quickly than those of men who “saw lumber” at night, a new study suggests.
Evaluating nearly 4 500 British adults who underwent cardiac imaging, researchers also learned that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) may be vastly underdiagnosed among snorers.
This finding surprised study author Dr Adrian Curta, who heads cardiac imaging at Munich University Hospital in Germany.
Serious health conditions
“A further surprise was the different manifestation of disease according to gender,” Curta said. “Females show different alterations in cardiac [measures]. A possible reason for this could be that women with OSA are more vulnerable to cardiac alterations.”
Loud snoring is a hallmark of obstructive sleep apnoea, which affects between 3 and 7% of adults in the United States, according to the US National Institutes of Health. Also characterised by brief periods where breathing stops, often followed by gasping for air, sleep apnoea is becoming recognised as a contributor to serious health conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and poor blood sugar metabolism.
Sleep apnoea treatment depends on the cause. Treatments include surgery to open narrowed upper airways or using a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine while sleeping.
Curta and his colleagues evaluated data from the UK Biobank, which follows the health and well-being of 500 000 volunteers. The researchers looked at data from nearly 4 500 participants who underwent cardiac imaging. These study volunteers were split into three groups: 38 with obstructive sleep apnoea; 1 919 who reported snoring; and 2 536 without OSA or snoring.
In both men and women, those with sleep apnoea and snoring tended to have larger left ventricles of the heart, meaning the walls were enlarged and the heart was working harder to pump, Curta said.
But when the snoring group was compared to the unaffected group, a more significant difference was found in the size of the left ventricle among women compared to men. These cardiac changes in self-reported snorers suggest earlier heart impairment in women and could point to undiagnosed sleep apnoea, he said.
Better prevention needed
The findings suggest the transition from snoring to obstructive sleep apnoea is an evolving process linked to a potentially dangerous enlargement of the left ventricle. But the research did not prove that sleep apnoea causes heart changes, only that an association exists between the two.
Curta noted that researchers are still uncertain why snoring would remodel women’s hearts more quickly than men’s. More research needs to be done to understand this process, he said.
“The most important clinical implication is that we need better prevention for OSA, such as a broader information programme,” Curta said. “Individuals with snoring should ask someone to observe them during sleep if they show periods of breathing cessation.”
Those who do stop breathing while sleeping should undergo a sleep study to determine how advanced their sleep apnoea is and the proper treatment, Curta said.
Underreported and underdiagnosed
Dr Tetyana Kendzerska is a sleep physician at Ottawa Hospital Sleep Center in Canada, and wasn’t involved in the new research. Since obesity is a known contributor to snoring and sleep apnoea, Kendzerska said losing excess weight is encouraged for those with snoring or sleep apnoea.
“We know that men and women report different symptoms for OSA, and as a result, obstructive sleep apnoea is seriously underreported and underdiagnosed in women,” she said.
“Given that potential cardiovascular risk associated with sleep apnoea may be greater in women than in men, first we need to identify women with sleep apnoea [by] increasing awareness among health care professionals,” Kendzerska added.
The research was to be presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, in Chicago. Research presented at meetings typically hasn’t been peer-reviewed or published, and results are considered preliminary.
