The Springboks have won seven and lost six Tests under Erasmus’ guidance but showed their potential with a series win over England and a win over the All Blacks in New Zealand.
“We went back to our traditional way, how the Springboks play rugby,” Le Roux told media in Cardiff on Tuesday, as quoted by the SBS News.
“There was a stage where people did not fear the Springboks anymore, or the badge. We are getting that back through the structures Rassie has built.
“Everyone in the team is equal, and it makes a big difference. The guys are playing for each other more and we know what it means for our country back home. We enjoy going out and wearing the jersey.”
This weekend the Boks face a Welsh team who are on an eighth-match win-streak and currently occupy third spot on the official World Rugby rankings.
Le Roux added that they would be up for the challenge.
“The squad is looking forward to it. This is the last game of the season for a lot of the guys, so one more week of hard work and they can have some time off.
“I don’t think it’s difficult (to produce one last big effort). It’s your job and when you play for South Africa, you’re representing your country. To end the tour on a high would be unbelievable for the squad and the people back home,” Le Roux said.
Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has taken a swipe at the Gupta family, saying an invitation he received from the family to a Sun City wedding found its “way into the waste basket, where it belonged”.
He told state capture inquiry chairperson, Deputy Justice Raymond Zondo, during his testimony on Tuesday that he refused to schedule a meeting with the family.
“At no stage would I have entertained meeting directly with the Guptas,” he said.
He also said he never had a one-on-one meeting with the Guptas and never visited their family home in Saxonwold.
When ministers accompanied former president Jacob Zuma to functions, including breakfast briefings following the State of the Nation Address, he recalled one or more of the Gupta brothers would be present. Although he would see the brothers, he would not interact with them, he added.
“I am not for sale to anybody,” he testified.
“Let me repeat, I refused to schedule a meeting with the Gupta family, whether at their residence or anywhere else,” he said.
Gordhan said he saw them at cricket matches once or twice but that did not mean there was a meeting.
Gordhan also told the commission about the time a Gupta brother may have been at a meeting he had with businessman Anil Ambani of the Reliance group of companies in or about June 2010.
He said he did not recall the details and that he was assisted by his former chief of staff, Dondo Mogajane.
Gordhan added that he was told that the Presidency put Rajesh Gupta in touch with Mogajane, and repeatedly asked for a meeting with him and even asked to attend the meeting in Saxonwold.
The minister said according to his office there were repeated efforts to try and meet him and get him into the meeting, “all of which turned down by my office or myself”, he said.
“I refused to schedule a meeting with the Gupta family, whether at their residence or anywhere else,” he said.
He said the only meeting he agreed to was with Ambani and added that Mogajane advised him that the meeting only lasted less than an hour.
Ministers of finance meet hundreds of investors on behalf of the country and this was just one of those.
Asked if he lied to Parliament about meeting with the Guptas, Gordhan said: “I would not lie to Parliament. If I wanted to, I could have left the meeting out, it is here, it is declared, meeting with Mr Ambani, evidence of both my and my office’s commitment.”
He said he intended to write to the speaker for clarification from the DA.
Gordhan said at the time of the response he had no recollection of the Gupta attendee, because that meeting was with Mr Ambani.
He emphasised that the meeting he had was with Mr Ambani – not a Gupta brother.
Earlier on Tuesday, Gordhan also challenged his detractors to appear before the commission and “say their piece under oath”.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m accountable to citizens of this country, then Parliament and my political organisation. But I’m not accountable to bullies,” he said.”Those making allegations outside or inside this forum should, under oath, come to this commission and say what they have to say.
“They must subject themselves to cross-examination. I appeared before [Judge] Nugent, under oath, and also here and have nothing to fear. I am not a commodity for sale and the Guptas learned that too.”
Gordhan is expected to appear before the commission again on Wednesday at 10:00.
A man has lost his arm in a freak accident while repairing an air-conditioner on Tuesday.
Emergency service Netcare 911 said it responded to reports of bleeding at a sports bar in Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast
“Reports from the scene indicate that an adult male sustained a partial amputation of his arm when while repairing an air conditioner,” Netcare 911 said.
The police search-and-rescue unit was called to assist in helping the injured man off the roof of the bar.
“The patient was treated on scene before being transported by another private ambulance service to hospital for further treatment,” according to Netcare 911.
People with peanut allergy can protect themselves from an allergic reaction by consuming a small amount of peanut powder every day, a new study suggests.
The “breakthrough” findings mean this new treatment is ready for review by the US Food and Drug Administration, the researchers added.
“We’re excited about the potential to help children and adolescents with peanut allergy protect themselves against accidentally eating a food with peanut in it,” study co-author Dr Stephen Tilles said in an ACAAI news release.
“Our hope when we started the study was that by treating patients with the equivalent of one peanut per day, many would tolerate as much as two peanuts,” he said.
“We were pleased to find that two-thirds of the people in the study were able to tolerate the equivalent of two peanuts per day after nine to 12 months of treatment, and half the patients tolerated the equivalent of four peanuts,” noted Tilles, a Seattle allergist and ACAAI past president.
The study included 551 patients, aged 4 to 55, with peanut allergy. One-third were given a placebo, while two-thirds were given peanut protein powder in increasing amounts until they reached the maintenance dose equivalent of one peanut a day.
“This is not a quick fix, and it doesn’t mean people with peanut allergy will be able to eat peanuts whenever they want,” said study co-author Dr Jay Lieberman, vice chair of the ACAAI food allergy committee.
“But it is definitely a breakthrough,” he added. “The hope would be to have a treatment available in the second half of 2019. If that happens, people who receive and are able to tolerate this treatment should be protected from accidental exposures.”
Big impact
Allergist Dr Punita Ponda agreed.
“The doses patients tolerate are high enough to likely prevent reactions with cross contamination or allow patients to eat foods with ‘may contain’ or ‘manufactured in’-type labels,” added Ponda, who is assistant chief in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Northwell Health, in Great Neck, New York, She was not involved with the study.
“This would make a large impact on the lives of patients with peanut allergy who may be afraid to eat outside of the house for fear of cross contamination or have to severely limit their diet due to the difficulty of avoiding products with the above mentioned safety labels,” Ponda noted.
The study was to be presented Sunday at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) annual meeting, in Seattle, and published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine.
There are no approved treatments for peanut allergy. If approved by the FDA, this treatment would be available by prescription and patients would need to continue taking it to stay protected from accidental peanut exposure.

PRETORIA, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is once again embarking on a nationwide awareness campaign to remind taxpayers of their obligation to submit outstanding tax returns.
The three-week campaign, which kicks off today, is targeted primarily at businesses, to encourage compliance regarding Corporate Income Tax (CIT), Value-Added Tax (VAT) and Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE). Information on taxpayer obligations, the submission of tax returns, and consequences related to non-submission will also be shared during the campaign. SARS will also issue final-demand letters to affected taxpayers.
Although Tax Season closed on 31 October 2018, those who missed the deadline are still expected to file all outstanding tax returns, and administrative penalties may be imposed for failure to file. Provisional taxpayers have until 31 January 2019 to file their tax returns via eFiling.
Taxpayers who do not submit their returns will be charged an administrative penalty, which can range from R250 to R16 000 per month, depending on the taxable income of the taxpayer. It is a criminal offence to not submit a return, and continuous non-compliance will lead to criminal prosecution.
SARS remains committed to providing service and education to taxpayers who need assistance. Taxpayers are encouraged to call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277, or to visit any of SARS branches with their taxpayer reference number at hand.
Poor collaboration at the right level, the lack of accountability and no proactive participation were identified as some of the stumbling blocks in the fight against malfeasance in the healthcare industry.
Healthcare Forensic Management Unit (HFMU) has started collaborating with other fraud combating institutions, Dr Katlego Mothudi, Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) managing director said. He believes there is a need for synergy between the healthcare sector, law enforcement agencies, the legal fraternity, and prosecutorial agencies,
“The work that we do focuses on some of the elements on fighting fraud and money recoveries. We want also to extend that to successful prosecutions of the fraudsters. At the moment, there is a formalisation in the process of a relationship with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). We have drafted a memorandum of understanding which will be signed off in the next few weeks,” Mothudi said.
The problem faced by the industry now is that it is thinking on fraud, waste and corruption is too small. Preventing fraud in the healthcare sector will make healthcare affordable and will also bring long-term benefits to the sector.
Win-win
“Our expertise in the private sector on fighting fraud gathered over time could help in making sure that we also protect the funds that will be deployed in the National Health Insurance vehicle in collaboration with those resources that are currently in the state. So, it is a win-win situation,” Mothudi added.
Council of Medical Schemes (CMS) Senior Health Economist, Nondumiso Khumalo, said when looking at the impact and threats fraud poses to healthcare the industry needs to adopt a holistic picture that includes suppliers, manufacturers, providers and consumers.
“Impact is felt at a financial level when administrators incur costs. The quality of healthcare is affected because of the deviation of costs,” he said.
According to CMS in 2017 the proportion of claims attributed to fraud, waste and abuse amounted to R30.15bn. From a global perspective, the exposure rate to corporate fraud has risen by 28% since 2007 from an industry average of 8%. In South Africa, estimates range from 3 to 15% of claims.
Khumalo added that as a cost driver in medical schemes fraud contributes to the costs barrier to entry and has left the membership stagnated at 8.8-million lives.
