Sydney – Two reviews into the state of Australian cricket sparked by the ball-tampering scandal are “confronting”, Cricket Australia board member Mark Taylor warned Sunday ahead of their release.
One is focused on the culture within the sport’s governing body and the other into the national team.
They are due to be made public on Monday, six months after CA commissioned them following the cheating furore in Cape Town this year.
Taylor said there were 41 recommendations.
“I have seen the review. It will be hard-hitting, confronting for CA and for anyone who loves the game of cricket,” the former Test skipper told Channel Nine.
“Everything is on the table.”
The scandal involved Australian players using sandpaper to alter the flight of the ball in a Test match against South Africa last March.
Coach Darren Lehmann quit in the wake of the uproar and then-captain Steve Smith, deputy David Warner and batsman Cameron Bancroft were banned from the game.
The backlash rocked Australian cricket to its core, undermining the long-held notion that its players were “tough but fair”.
Critics blamed a win-at-all-costs mentality that they said developed under CA chief executive James Sutherland and his management team.
CA previously denied the charge but set up the two separate inquiries to examine how the scandal occurred.
“All of us have had too much negativity around the game,” said Taylor. “Tomorrow is the opportunity to get it out there.
“There is no doubt there is a mandate, as I would look at it, in these reviews for CA to make some change, to get better at what we do, and also, most importantly, to get on with how we do business with people.
“And we have got to get that better. No doubt about that. I have said that before.”
Sutherland, who departed last week after 17 years in charge, said lessons had been learned from the overwhelming public disgust over the issue.
“It’s a reminder to everyone as to how important cricket is… and the pedestal on which the Australian cricket team is held and the expectations that come with being an Australian cricketer,” he said.

For thousands of years, sexual abstinence (and the resulting frustration) has been thought to boost performance and aggression. Both Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson supposedly swore off sex in the weeks leading up to fights. And there’s that infamous scene in Rocky whenMick tells Rock to “lay off that pet shop dame” because “women weaken legs”.
But even though you’ve probably heard that abstinence boosts performance before a competition, this idea has always had its detractors. Professional wrestler Ronda Rousey, for instance, famously said she has “as much sex as possible” before a fight.
Well, a new study weighs in on Rousey’s side of the debate. Sex before competition or a big workout isn’t just verboten – it may actually boost your performance.
In the study, researchers asked a group of 12 men to perform lower body exercises the morning after they’d either had sex or had taken a night off from sexual activity.
“This night-before design was to mimic the time-frame that some athletes may face,” says Todd Astorino, co-author of the study and a professor of kinesiology at California State University, San Marcos.
Astorino and his colleagues found that sex had no effect on the men’s ability to perform the weight training movements. During five sets of two lower-body exercises, both peak and average performance held steady regardless of whether a man had had sex the night before.
While the study was admittedly very small, “our data would suggest that sex does not impair muscle force when performed within 12 hours of a gym workout,” Astorino says. But there’s a caveat, he adds, “At the world-class level, athletes win and lose by very small margins.”
Whether or not sex could subtly influence a competitor’s performance is a difficult nail to hammer down. (Pun intended.)
Additional research on the subject of pre-competition sex sheds a little more light on the debate.
“There are thoughts that testosterone levels may change before and after sex, and this can alter things like mood as well as performance,” Astorino says.
Abstain for more gains?
One 2003 study from China, for instance, found that a man’s testosterone levels remain relatively steady in the days after an ejaculation. But if he can hold out for a full week, his T levels can jump by almost 45% on his seventh day of abstinence. (Testosterone levels do not, however, continue to climb after that day-seven peak, the authors of that study say.)
Meanwhile, a similar study found no such jump in T among men who abstained, and in fact found testosterone tends to be slightly elevated after sex.
As if mixed results like those weren’t frustrating enough, experts also point out that every sport is different. A comprehensive 2016 review of all the existing studies on sex and athletic performance found a lot of conflicting data and a general lack of evidence on performance in the context of different types of competition. “Given the variety of sports, and their different metabolic and situational differences, generalisation is not possible,” the authors of that review say.
What to make of all this? Whatever you want. It doesn’t seem to matter much whether an athlete gets it on before competition – as long as he doesn’t have extremely strenuous sex right before a match.
So if you feel like sex relaxes you and helps you focus during competition, feel free to get busy. Or if you think abstaining helps you stay aggressive, go ahead and skip sex. There’s not enough evidence today to suggest switching up your pre-game routines.

The country has been provided with a “window of opportunity” to change its trajectory, but to do this, it will require a sense of urgency and a “narrative based on a culture of integrity”, public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan says.
Writing for the Sunday Times, Gordhan said interventions to save state-owned enterprises (SOEs) must go further than simply replacing boards: he said structural challenges must also be addressed.
“Over the past seven months, we have been piecing together the story of how our SOCs were repurposed to benefit a few, with repercussions for the rest of the country which has suffered financially and lost faith in the integrity of those governing the country. There were many political office-bearers, civil servants and other professionals who were either direct beneficiaries, or simply turned a blind eye.
“We have learnt that just changing compromised boards will not be enough to restore SOEs. Interventions must go further to rid institutions of complicit managers,” he wrote.
Since his appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa in February, Gordhan has overhauled the boards of several SOEs, where allegations of corruption and maladministration have been rife.
He appointed new leadership at Eskom and made changes to the Transnet board. He also appointed an interim board at Denel. SOEs have widely been considered to be the sites of state capture. Gordhan previously estimated that the country may have lost more than R100bn to state capture.
In the Sunday Times, Gordhan said cash injections will not solve the problem. Patronage networks must also be unraveled, he warned.
“Dismantling the destructive business-state patronage networks that have embedded themselves across public enterprises – and indeed across all spheres of government – will require time, difficult choices and bold action by leaders.
“We need to consider: what are the objectives of SOEs? How do we fix their governance? How do we create fiscal sustainability? How do we strengthen the role of the state as a shareholder? How do we professionalise the boards and management? How do we ensure transparency and accountability? Are our SOEs fit for the future?
“Right now, we have a window of opportunity to change the country’s trajectory, but this requires the voice of the citizenry, it requires a sense of urgency and it requires a new narrative centred on a culture of integrity,” Gordhan said.
DA leader Mmusi Maimane says the ANC must repay the R2m donation it allegedly received from VBS Mutual Bank in seven days.
This follows a report in the Sunday Times that the ANC received the donation from VBS bosses, who reportedly discussed this in WhatsApp texts seen by the paper.
The ANC told the Sunday Times that it would launch its own investigation into the allegations, and said it only had a record of R250 000 received from VBS to buy a table at its R106th birthday celebrations in East London, earlier this year.
The ANC reportedly said it would pay back the money, should the Sunday Times’ report prove to be true.
According to the Sunday Times, it is alleged that minister for cooperative governance and traditional affairs Zweli Mkhize asked for a R2m donation from Vele Investments, majority shareholder at VBS, in 2016, during the ANC’s election campaign.
On Sunday, the DA called the donation a “kickback” and called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to lay criminal charges against Mkhize. Maimane called on the National Prosecuting Authority to “act against those in the ANC who stole from the poor”.
Maimane said Ramaphosa must instruct ANC treasurer-general, Paul Mashatile, to ensure that the party pays back the R2m within seven days.
“President Ramaphosa has now been afforded a golden opportunity to prove to South Africans that he is more than just hot air and empty promises. We hope the President takes this opportunity and acts by laying criminal charges against his fellow comrades, and ensuring this R2 million kickback to the ANC is paid back,” Maimane said.
Maimane also said he will be asking questions in Parliament next week about when Ramaphosa became aware of the VBS scandal.
Two weeks ago, City Press reported that Ramaphosa knew about corruption at the bank in early 2017 but failed to take action.
But Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Khusela Diseko, vehemently denied this. In a statement, she said, “President Ramaphosa has no knowledge of any meeting where he is said to have met any person associated with VBS Mutual Bank where he was purportedly briefed on the matter. Likewise, the claim that President Ramaphosa was forewarned about the impending implosion of VBS Bank is unsubstantiated.”
