Thousands of people gather in Senekal against farm murders where the killers of 21 year old farm manager Brendin Horner appeared in court.

Events leading up to and since the murder of 21-year-old Brendin Horner in the farming district of Paul Roux in the eastern Free State have inflamed tensions in the region and in broader society.
Horner was the victim of violent crime, a social phenomenon which is affecting far too many South Africans of all walks of life. And it again showed up a broken criminal justice system, exposed societal cleavages and gave a golden opportunity to populists and instigators.
Emotions are again at fever pitch ahead of Friday’s second court appearance of Horner’s alleged murderers at the Magistrate’s Court in Senekal.
The town became a national flashpoint last week after violence erupted when protesters, angry about Horner’s murder and frustrated with the criminal justice system, stormed the court and torched a police vehicle.
Friday’s second court appearance promises to be another fraught affair, with the EFF planning to invade the town and AfriForum set to follow suit, while indications are that locals and farmers from the district plan to stay away.
The right to demonstrate and protest in this country is protected by law. And the anger ignited by Horner’s death is legitimate – his murder is emblematic of the lawlessness which affects many communities across South Africa. But no one has the right to violently inflame tension by using race and populism in the interest of short-term political gain. And there are real suspicions that those organisations planning to travel to Senekal are using it as a staging post for their own narrow political ends.
South Africans have a common problem, and one which affects us all, regardless of race or political persuasion: poor governance and a broken criminal justice system.
We should direct our frustration and anger at those who have broken government and the system and at those in charge who can, but don’t, fix it. The answer to our problems does not lie in posturing in Senekal, but in sound and rational leadership seeking solutions, not confrontation.
In court on Friday Horner’s alleged murderers will face justice. But outside court, cool heads must prevail.
The Bulls will seemingly fight fire with fire by selecting Clinton Swart to counter Frans Steyn when they take on the Cheetahs.
The 27-year-old inside centre, a former Cheetah, has a reputation for being a direct player and could stand up well to his Springbok opponent.
Jake White, the Bulls’ director of rugby, though also notes it’s part of his journey of discovery to get to know his players better.
There’s little scientific evidence to suggest that rock will break rock but Jake White, at least in rugby terms, is going to give it a bash anyway.
With the imposing presence of Frans Steyn looming for his Bulls in their Super Rugby Unlocked meeting with the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Friday evening, White is going to counter the threat with Clinton Swart.
The 27-year-old utility back – equally adept at inside centre or flyhalf – will make his debut for the team from Loftus, ironically against his former teammates and boasts a feisty reputation that is hoped will disrupt his illustrious Springbok opponent.
Swart, who played under White in Japan for Toyota Verblitz, is significantly shorter than Steyn yet packs a punch in midfield.
“I suppose in a way his selection is designed to counter Frans,” said White.
“I know what Frans can offer. If we give Frans lots of gainline, they’ll play off of him, so in a lot of ways it had an influence on Clinton’s selection.”
Teams:
Cheetahs
15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Malcolm Jaer, 13 Benhard Janse van Rensburg, 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Rosko Specman, 10 Tian Schoeman, 9 Ruan Pienaar (captain), 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Junior Pokomela, 6 Andisa Ntsila, 5 Walt Steenkamp, 4 Carl Wegner, 3 Luan de Bruin, 2 Reinach Venter, 1 Charles Marais
Substitutes: 16 Jacques du Toit, 17 Boan Venter, 18 Erich de Jager, 19 JP du Preez, 20 Aidon Davis, 21 Chris Massyn, 22 Tian Meyer, 23 William Small-Smith
Bulls
15 Gio Aplon, 14 David Kriel, 13 Cornal Hendricks, 12 Clinton Swart, 11 Jade Stighling, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Embrose Papier, 8 Duane Vermeulen (captain), 7 Arno Botha, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Ruan Nortje, 4 Jason Jenkins, 3 Trevor Nyakane, 2 Johan Grobbelaar, 1 Jacques van Rooyen
Substitutes: 16 Joe van Zyl, 17 Gerhard Steenekamp, 18 Mornay Smith, 19 Sintu Manjezi, 20 Nizaam Carr, 21 Ivan van Zyl, 22 Chris Smith, 23 Stedman Gans
But it’s not the sole reason for the Bulls’ director of rugby breaking up a promising combination of Stedman Gans and Cornal Hendricks.
White has made no secret of the fact that he’s on a journey of discovery still, steadily gaining better insights into players he hasn’t worked with extensively previously.
“I don’t really know all these players, so I’d like to try different combinations. It gives me a chance to see them play,” he said.
“At the same time I think we can appreciate that we’re not going to get away with playing Stedman and Cornal every week. Clinton has trained really well, he comes from Free State and played for the Cheetahs, so he probably knows the stadium well.”
Corniel van Zyl, Cheetahs assistant coach, isn’t expecting anything less from the Bulls.
“Frans made a very good debut for us. He’s a Springbok and I’m convinced they have been working on a plan to contain him,” he said.
“He’s a strong runner and an important component both on attack and defence, but whether they target him actively remains to be seen.”

It is currently recommended that women get their first mammogram starting at age 50
Earlier mammograms, it is believed, may show too many false positives
A new British study, however, indicates that this is false, and earlier screening may indeed save lives
Adding to an ongoing debate over the timing of mammography, a new British study finds that screening women aged 40 to 49 for breast cancer saves lives, with only small increases in overdiagnosis.
“This is a very long-term follow-up of a study which confirms that screening in women under 50 can save lives,” researcher Stephen Duffy, from Queen Mary University of London, said in a university news release.
“The benefit is seen mostly in the first 10 years, but the reduction in mortality persists in the long term at about one life saved per thousand women screened,” he added.
The findings are now added to the mix of data that has fueled disparate guidelines on breast cancer screening in the United States and around the world.
Too many false-positives
In the United States, for example, the influential US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) now recommends that women at average risk for breast cancer get their first mammogram starting at age 50, and then repeat the exam every two years until age 74. The expert panel believes that before the age of 50, mammography may pick up too many false-positives and “overdiagnose” breast cancer, causing unnecessary expense and distress.
Women considering whether to get a mammogram in their 40s should discuss the matter with their doctor, the USPSTF says.
However, the American Cancer Society currently advises that women aged 40 to 44 consider the “option” of annual mammography, while women aged 45 to 54 should get the yearly screen.
Trying to settle the matter, Duffy’s group looked at data from the UK Breast Screening Age Trial. Between 1990 and 1997, more than 160 000 women aged 39 to 41 were randomly selected to receive either an annual mammogram or to wait until the age of 50 to begin such screening, as UK government guidelines advised.
Now, looking at 23 years of follow-up data, the researchers found that screening at 40 to 49 was tied to a 25% reduction in breast cancer deaths over the first 10 years.
Better equipment
What’s more, the rate of overdiagnosed cancers arising from earlier screening did not seem to add to the burden of overdiagnoses already seen when screening began at age 50 and older.
Improvements in technology may mean that earlier screening might be even more beneficial today, Duffy said.
“We now screen more thoroughly and with better equipment than in the 1990s, when most of the screening in this trial took place, so the benefits may be greater than we’ve seen in this study,” he theorised.
Two experts in the United States agreed that when it comes to mammography, earlier may be better.
“Several other studies in the past have had similar results,” noted Dr Alice Police, who directs breast surgery at Northwell Health Cancer Institute in Sleepy Hollow, New York. “However, the scale of this study sets it apart and makes it a powerful reminder of our best weapon in the fight against breast cancer: the mighty mammogram.”
One in eight will develop breast cancer
Dr Kristin Byrne is chief of breast imaging at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. She agreed that “the findings in this study substantiate what multiple other studies have found: Beginning screening mammography at age 40 saves lives.”
Therefore, “especially in women in their 40s, it is very important to diagnose it when the tumour is small and before it has spread to other parts of the body,” Byrne said. She also agreed with Duffy that “technology for mammography has improved since the 1990s and we are able to find more cancers and smaller cancers before it has spread.”
Byrne noted that “most women who get breast cancer (75% to 85%) have no known risk factors, such as family history of breast cancer, and one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer. This is why every patient should have a screening mammogram every year starting at age 40 – sometimes sooner, if they have risk factors such as family history or a genetic mutation which puts them at increased risk for developing breast cancer.”
