North West MEC for Social Development Hoffman Galeng expressed his condolences to the Mafoko family on Monday after seven of the family’s members were wiped out in a blaze.
Forty-eight-year-old Boitumelo Mafoko, her five children and one grandchild died in the fire at their home. It is believed that a candle started the blaze.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and to all residents of Kgetleng River Local Municipality. This is a painful tragedy. We urge the residents here to work with the government as we prepare to pay [our] last respects to the deceased,” Galeng was quoted as saying.
Galeng was accompanied by Kgetleng River Local Municipality Mayor Kim Medupe, the SA Police Services and officials from various government departments, spokesperson Petrus Siko said.
Siko said a team of social workers from the department, Phokeng Trauma Centre and Lifeline have been sent to the area to provide trauma counselling and debriefing to family members, as well as pupils and teachers at local schools the Mafoko children attended.
He said Galeng was also expected to buy clothes and groceries for two children who survived.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone told News24 that an inquest docket had been opened and that no foul play was suspected.

London – Carlos Ramos has been praised for acting with “professionalism and integrity” by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) after the umpire was labelled a liar and a thief by Serena Williams during the American star’s US Open final meltdown.
Williams launched an astonishing verbal attack on chair umpire Ramos as she crashed to a shock 6-2, 6-4 defeat by Japan’s Naomi Osaka on Saturday.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was given three code violations by Ramos, the first for receiving coaching, the second for racket abuse and the third for verbal abuse of the umpire.
The second and third violations earned Williams a point penalty and then a game penalty, giving Osaka a 5-3 second set lead that effectively gifted her the title.
Williams had demanded an apology from Ramos during her rant and later called the punishment “sexist”, while claiming she was fighting for women’s rights because male players got away with similar antics.
The former world No 1’s defiant stance was backed by WTA Tour chief executive Steve Simon and legendary former female player Billie-Jean King, who questioned the coaching penalty that first sparked Williams’ anger.
But the ITF, world tennis’ governing body, responded to the controversy by insisting Ramos was well within his rights to hand down the penalties.
“Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis. Mr. Ramos’ decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were re-affirmed by the US Open’s decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offences,” an ITF statement said.
“It is understandable that this high profile and regrettable incident should provoke debate.
“At the same time, it is important to remember that Mr. Ramos undertook his duties as an official according to the relevant rule book and acted at all times with professionalism and integrity.”
Former umpire Richard Ings also backed Ramos for his handling of the stunning incident.
Ings, who once docked a game from John McEnroe for verbal abuse at the 1987 US Open, told BBC Radio Four’s Today programme: “Carlos Ramos is an umpire with 40 years of experience.
“He handled that match absolutely perfectly. He saw violations and he had the courage of his convictions to call them when he saw them.
“I support him 110 per cent. It was one of the best officiating jobs that I’ve seen in years.”
Williams, who was aiming to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles, refused to shake hands with Ramos after the match.
Her $17 000 fine for the code violations, imposed by the United States Tennis Association, will be deducted from the $1.85 million prize she received as the runner-up to Osaka.
The Belgian government committed €30m to South Africa’s land reform process, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu said on Monday after a meeting with that country’s deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister, Didier Reynders.
Speaking at a press conference after their meeting, Reynders emphasised the need for balance in South Africa’s process of amending the Constitution.
“We are sure that we need to go firm on the process of land reform because it was at the beginning [of] the reconciliation process of the country,” Reynders said.
He acknowledged the current parliamentary process relating to the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution to allow expropriation without compensation, describing it as the “best way”.
“The importance of the process is to be smooth,” Reynders said. “Of course, we need to see a balanced situation.”
He pledged Belgium’s help.
“It’s a difficult issue in many countries, so we need to be sure it is a balanced process. We don’t want to express an extreme view on that,” Reynders said.
Sisulu said Reynders indicated to her that South Africa should perhaps educate the world about its stance on land.
“Maybe we are misunderstood. And I appreciated his advice and told him that we are doing something about it to educate the world about what we are doing to redistribute the land,” Sisulu said.
“The bottom line which has come through is the Belgian government has understood our position, has from the beginning been with us, [has] committed €30 m to the process,” Sisulu said.
“What the minister pointed out to me is we need to educate the world so that we don’t have a situation that we [had] about a month ago, that we have a misrepresentation of what we want to do. I was grateful for that kind of indication from him.”
In August, American broadcaster Fox News aired a factually incorrect insert about land reform in South Africa, prompting a tweet from US president Donald Trump.
A few days, while on a state visit to SA, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said the UK supported President Cyril Ramaphosa’s approach to land reform and believed it could potentially unlock further investment opportunities in Africa.
Also on Monday, COPE leader Mosiuoa Lekota and AfriForum announced that they would lobby foreign embassies in South Africa to put pressure on the government to not amend the Constitution.
Lekota’s party said that it first wanted to discuss the issue of lobbying foreign missions.

Time change putting a damper on your evening workouts? If the darkness is only good at motivating you home to your cozy couch, you'll want to think about switching your workouts to the brighter mornings. Here are some ways to prep for morning workouts the night before.
Skip the morning scavenger hunt: Don't give up on the morning run because you can't find your sock or sneaker or sports bra. Prepping the night before only takes a few minutes, and helps avoid wasted time frantically searching for the essentials. Do a load of laundry if you need to, and then lay out your outfit so when you wake up, you can slip it on and go.
Gear up: Also get any gear you need ready. Charge your iPod, put your yoga mat or iPhone armband by the door, put your fave fitness video in the DVD player, and lay your dumbbells next to the TV.
Munch: Since working out on an empty stomach isn't great for your metabolism or your energy levels, premake a little morning snack and keep it in the fridge so you can quickly grab it to nosh on while getting ready. Half a slice of whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, apple slices with cheese, and ingredients for a small smoothie are the perfect pre-workout snack.
Early to bed: Be sure to hit the hay early so you're well rested, and set your alarm to wake up to your favorite peppy song. If you tend to hit the snooze button way too many times, try putting your alarm clock on the other side of the room.
Pencil it in: Text or call a friend to set up a fitness date. If you decide on a time to meet in the a.m., you'll feel obligated to go, even if your mind and body tell you otherwise.
Get psyched! Check the schedule at your gym or studio, and choose an exciting and inspirational class to look forward to. A 6 a.m. Zumba class with your favorite instructor or sunrise yoga in a heated studio are sure to pull you out of bed. Or if music moves you, create a new workout playlist to motivate.
Post-workout treat: Plan a special breakfast to eat after your workout as a reward for your efforts. You'll get through your workout a little faster knowing there's a hot cup of coffee and homemade oatmeal pumpkin spice bread waiting for you at home.

When someone is obese or overweight, excess fat gets stored in and around vital organs such as the liver.
According to an article published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the most prevalent form of chronic disease, affecting 10 to 20% of the general paediatric population worldwide. It is also predicted that it will become the biggest cause of liver failure and subsequent liver transplants in children in the next decade.
The main reason for the occurrence of this condition in children is the rising numbers of obesity, according to an article published in the paediatric online journal Children.
Unfortunately, NAFLD remains largely understudied and unrecognised.
How can NAFLD in children be prevented?
While research has shown in the past that obesity in children can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in later stages of their life, they can contract this disease while they are still young.
According to a previous Health24 article, studies have shown that the number of cases of NAFLD among US adolescents has doubled since the 1980s. This is mostly linked to the growing incidence of obesity.
According to the most recent statistics, 14.2% of South African primary school children are currently obese. If these rates continue to grow, 3.91 million school children will be overweight or obese by 2025.
The main way to prevent NAFLD in children is to make changes to lifestyle factors that can lead to obesity. Here’s what you can do:
1. Curb dependence on unhealthy foods
Fast food is undisputedly linked to childhood obesity. Unfortunately, in a fast-paced world it’s so easy for parents to rely on ready-made meals or junk food to feed their children. The increased caloric intake from unhealthy foods leads to fat being stored around the liver.
According to the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, it is important to limit the amount of sugar and empty kilojoules your child consumes.
Junk food has minimal nutritional value and is often packed with saturated fat and sodium. Choose home-cooked meals over store-bought ready-made meals and junk food. Encourage your child to eat fresh fruit and vegetables and introduce the following in lunchboxes:
Boiled eggs
Chopped carrots and cucumber, rosa tomatoes with hummus or homemade guacamole
Fresh fruit
Ostrich biltong
Nuts and seed mixes (or bars)
Wholewheat wraps with lean meat cuts like chicken or turkey
2. Encourage your child to be more active
Physical inactivity among children is a growing problem and is specifically linked to screen time, involving TVs, smartphones and computer games.
Unfortunately inactivity is one of the great contributors to an unhealthy childhood weight, which can ultimately lead to NAFLD.
The solution is less screen time and more physical activity. Encourage your child to take part in at least one extramural activity that requires movement, and introduce family activities such as going for walks. No time to get out? Keep your children active by doing the following:
Play inexpensive games in the living room or garden – hitting a balloon over a volleyball net can provide hours of fun.
Play a game of charades which involves a lot of movement.
Dance together as a family.
If you are unable to join the gym as a family, there are home workouts for all fitness levels on YouTube.
Invest in a device that encourages “exergaming” – your children can have fun with video games, but with the added benefit of moving around.
3. Determine whether your child is at risk for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
Insulin plays a big role in NAFLD. This hormone is important for regulating blood sugar levels. When fat cells get bombarded by too much sugar, they stop responding to insulin and the pancreas creates more insulin. When the liver is bombarded by the excess insulin, it allows more fat into the liver cells, leading to NAFLD.
When children are prediabetic, the increased amount of insulin in the liver can lead to permanent liver damage. It is therefore important to know your child’s diabetes risk by having their blood sugar levels tested, thereby avoiding problems at a later stage.
Controlling blood sugar levels is unfortunately not always enough. According to recent research, doctors are discovering more cases of NAFLD among diabetics with controlled sugar levels, as well as those with prediabetes.
It is therefore important to start reducing your child’s risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes from an early age.
How is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease treated?
The best way to prevent the problem of NAFLD for now is the modification of certain lifestyle factors, states Dr Dina Halegoua-Demarzio, director of the Fatty Liver Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, US. This can be achieved by “avoiding processed carbohydrates, getting regular exercise, and if a patient is obese, losing weight,” she says.
How will I know if my child has a liver condition?
The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation states that liver disease in children can be diagnosed in the following ways:
A liver function test or ultrasound, which is usually performed when a child has had abdominal pain for an extended period of time.
A doctor will feel if the liver or spleen is enlarged.
Blood is tested for abnormal liver function.
The following signs and symptoms could also be indicative of liver disease:
Bones that break easily and/or bruising
Pale stools
Severely itchy skin
Prolonged loss of appetite
Lack of normal growth due to malnutrition
Consult your doctor immediately if your child shows any of the above symptoms. Generally it’s also recommended that parents monitor their children’s weight and enforce healthy habits from an early age.
