News24.com | Police mourn 29 officers killed in the line of duty
Wreaths were laid on Sunday as the Department of Police held its annual commemoration day at its memorial site at thee Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The names of 29 officers who died in the line of duty between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018 were added to the wall of remembrance witnessed by family and loved ones of the murdered members.
“We call on all communities and society to work with the police to fight the scourge of police killings,” police minister Bheki Cele said.
“Police members are a national asset and they need to be protected by all of us. One police killing is one to many. My wish is for events of this nature to never happen.
“We should never have to lose our own members through the hands of criminals. The safety of our men and women in blue remains high on the agenda of the SAPS and is at the heart of the SAPS’s strategic imperatives to ensure the safety of our members.”
Acting national police commissioner Lieutenant General Lebeoana Tsumane said SAPS’ resolve to equip officers with the “necessary skills to ensure their safety” will contribute to the fight against crime.
“Throughout September, which has been declared National Police Safety Month, we will continue to increase safety awareness among our members in order to highlight measures to reduce attacks, vehicle accidents and the murder of our police officials,” Tsumane said.
The slain officers’ children were offered support in terms of education, training and development through the South African Police Education Trust Fund, while SAPS’ employee health and wellness component renders “psychological and spiritual support” to the families, friends and colleagues.
News24.com | DA councillor calls on minister’s intervention in NMB
The DA’s former budget and treasury MMC in Nelson Mandela Bay Retief Odendaal has called on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) minister Zweli Mkhize “to put an immediate end to this illegal occupation of City Hall”.
The DA on Friday lodged court papers in Port Elizabeth, asking for an urgent review of what it described as a “coup d’état”, when the ANC, EFF and UDM banded together to remove Athol Trollip as the mayor on Monday.
Former deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani of the UDM was elected mayor.
Councillor Odendaal released a statement on Sunday on behalf of the “NMB coalition”, claiming that the local ANC, UDM and other smaller parties were giving Mkhize the “middle finger” by not meeting with a delegation from Cogta.
“By choosing not to meet with a delegation from the National Department of Cogta, the illegitimate government in NMB is now more isolated, irrelevant and paranoid than ever,” he claimed.
Mkhize has appointed a task team to establish the facts in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Odendaal said: “We support Cogta Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize’s intervention and urge the Minister to put an immediate end to this illegal occupation of City Hall.”
He finished by saying the coalition still recognised Athol Trollip as the “real Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay”.
“Only the coalition government can take Nelson Mandela Bay forward.”
The DA meanwhile contends in its court papers that the procedure to remove Trollip and council speaker Jonathan Lawack wasn’t in accordance with the Municipal Structures Act.
City manager Johan Mettler had adjourned the meeting following Lawack’s removal, which occured before the motion against Trollip, citing a lack of quorum after the DA caucus walked out.
The appointment therefore of a person designated by the MEC for local government Fikile Xasa, to preside over the election of a new speaker, was not procedural, the DA argued. Mettler was still capable of presiding, as per the municipal structures act.
They have asked for the matter to be dealt with urgently.
Sport24.co.za | ‘Dream come true’ for Thiem after knocking out Anderson
New York – Austrian ninth seed Dominic Thiem reached his first US Open quarter-final on Sunday with a 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (7/2) win over 2017 runner-up Kevin Anderson.
Thiem, the runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros in June, will next face the world number one again after the defending champion defeated Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4.
Thiem will be playing in his fourth Slam quarter-final but first outside of the French Open where he was a semi-finalist in 2016 and 2017 before this year’s run to the championship match.
“It’s a dream coming true,” said Thiem, who had two match points against Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round last year but fell to the Argentine in five sets.
“I was really close last year, I couldn’t close it out,” said Thiem, who offered thanks to an appreciative Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd.
“Last year whole stadium was full of Argentinians. You guys were on my side so it was great.”
His progress to the last-eight in New York comes despite choosing to play European clay court events after Wimbledon before then losing his only summer hard court outing in Cincinnati to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
He said the roomy court in the new stadium worked to his advantage as he dealt with Anderson’s big serves.
“I could go far back on the return which helped me, it’s a little bit like on clay,” said Thiem, who called the victory “one of my best matches ever.”
Health24.com | How Kelvin Trautman trains to be one of the best action photographers
Kelvin Trautman is a ghost. If you’re a trail runner, paddler or mountain biker, there’s a good chance he’s silently snapped you from behind a bush, in a tree or while hanging off a cliff face.
If you’re talented enough to make the top spots at these events, then he’s probably running alongside you for a large portion of the race – hefting his equipment on his back and cradling his camera in this arms for his quick-fire shots.

Unlike many of his photographer peers, Trautman doesn’t get ferried around to easy shooting locations – he has to run, paddle, climb or cycle to the next best vantage spot. And to do this, he needs to be seriously fit.
And just to drive home how fit he is, I interview him the day before he does the Non Stop Dusi Canoe Marathon, a race which you paddle the Dusi river in a day. That’s 108km, which entails 35km of portage. It took him and his partner in a K2 just two hours, coming third overall.
Cross training kills monotony
“Unfortunately due to my shooting schedule, I don’t have a structured training plan but I’ve learnt how to squeeze in the right kind of training whenever I can. I’ve learnt the benefits of cross training, so I mix it up by doing open water swimming, free weights, core work, paddling, mountain biking and trail running,” says Trautman.
His favourite cross training sport is swimming, but not the traditional type, he says. “I often do long sea (or dam) swims. I do five ‘ins and outs’ (where you swim out to the backline, catch a wave, run back up the beach, around the life guard tower and then swim back out). In the pool, I often try mixing up my sessions by doing 50m intervals (25m underwater and a 25m sprint).
“I also try to tread water between intervals instead of hanging on the wall for dear life. I sometimes swim with a T-shirt on and I use a kick board. I find that swimming has the best overall benefits and can help you with almost any kind of race goals. I get the most out of my training where the aim is to have fun and be as challenging as possible at the same time.”

There are crap days
“I have days where I spend hours cold, wet and shivering in mud. But then I look at the race I’m covering, see how the athletes are suffering in the same conditions and it makes me feel better.
“Yes, it does sound sadistic, but there is something to be said for shared suffering. And best of all, when the conditions are rubbish, there’s more to photograph. The human spirit is much more noticeable and there is so much more to capture.”
There are no chain emails in the outdoors
“After sitting with your eyes glued to electronic spreadsheets and emails, running in nature provides a sensory overload that can reset your brain. No gossip, traffic or cellphones.
“It seems crazy to both work and train indoors. What’s even more crazy is that it doesn’t take much to change this. The hardest part is just to start and once you’ve made the decision to tie your running shoes or pack your canoe, it’s all downhill from there.”

The deep end is the most rewarding
“People don’t enjoy being challenged. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s where you grow the most. Going on a new adventure can be daunting, no matter if you’re hurling your parachute-clad body off a cliff with your camera in hand, or simply exploring your local park for the first time. It’s scary but it’s bloody addictive. You’ll learn more about yourself when you’re in the deep end than any other place in the world.”
Fitness is a job requirement
“I need to see and know the whole race course that I’m covering, and get to places that other people wouldn’t physically. I need to be able to stick with the front runners to be able to shoot them. As much as it is important to get to the perfect location for the right shot, it is also about being creative on the spot. Keep your eyes open for the right photographic opportunity.”

Health24.com | 15 common mistakes you might be making when using condoms
Putting on a condom may seem second nature to you by now, but are you actually doing it the right way? Sadly, research suggests you might not be.
Researchers from Indiana University analysed 50 studies on condom usage, and after crunching the numbers on 16 years of data, they found a laundry list of errors. Could you be making one of them? Check out the top 15 things that couples are doing wrong when gearing up for getting down.

1. Late application
Across the numerous studies, between 17 and 51.1% of people reported putting a condom on after intercourse has already begun. (Which doesn’t quite cut it when it comes to STD prevention.)
2. Early removal
Between 13.6 and 44.7% of the respondents reported removing the condom before intercourse was complete.
3. Completely unrolling the condom prior to application
Between 2.1 and 25.3% of people admitted to completely unrolling the condom before sliding it on. How does that even work?
4. No space at the tip
Failing to leave space for semen at the tip of the condom was reported by 24.3 to 45.7% of the respondents.

5. Failure to remove air
When looking back to their last sexual encounter, 48.1% of women and 41.6% of men reported that they didn’t squeeze the air from the tip before use.
6. Inside-out condoms
Between four and 30.4% of participants reported they began rolling the condom on inside out, but then flipped it over and continued its use. And that’s bad, since it can expose her to your pre-ejaculatory fluids, which can get her pregnant.
(Nope, that wasn’t just a lie your gym teacher told you.)
7. Failure to completely unroll the condom before use
When looking back to their last sexual encounter, 11.2% of women and 8.8% of men had began intercourse before the condom was unrolled all the way.
8. Exposure to a sharp object
Between 2.1 and 11.2% of people had opened condom packets with sharp objects. The problem: If it’s sharp enough to rip the wrapper, it’s sharp enough to rip the condom. Duh!

9. Failure to check for damage
When removing the condom from the package, 82.7% of women and 74.5% of men reported that they fail to check for damage before use. What to look for: Make sure the wrapper isn’t worn down or ripped open, keep your eyes peeled for expired dates, and check for visible imperfections while unrolling.
10. No lubrication
Between 16 and 25.8% of people reported using condoms without lubrication. The trouble? If you’re having sex for an extended period of time, the condom is more likely to tear without lubrication.
11. Lubrication complications
Roughly 3.2% of women and 4.7% of men reported using an oil-based lube with a latex condom. That weakens the latex, which can make it prone to breakage.
12. Incorrect withdrawal
Nearly 31% of men and 27% of women reported that (post-sex) they failed to promptly and properly withdraw after ejaculation. No matter what the Cranberries sang, guys, this ain’t a time to let it linger.

13. Reusing a condom
Between 1.4 and 3.3% of people reported reusing a condom at least twice during a sexual encounter. Gross.
14. Incorrect storage
Between 3.3 and 19.1% of people in the studies had stored their condoms in conditions that did not comply with the recommendations on the package. Avoid storing them in direct sunlight or your wallet – both can degrade the latex.

15. Not wearing one at all
This wasn’t actually part of the study, but we should add that #15 is this: Not using one at all. According to the (most recent) National Survey of Sexual Health and Behaviour, only 45% of men ages 18 to 24 used a condom with their last sexual partner. And as the age groups increased, the stats only got worse: Only 29.3% of men ages 25 to 34 used condoms and 21.3% of men between ages 35 and 44.
