Although children tend to be more resilient to Covid-19, some children have developed a hyperinflammatory condition called multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C). This disease is dangerous and can even lead to death.
On 2 October 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a new report which suggests that a type of multisystem inflammatory syndrome can also affect some adults. This version is referred to as MIS-A.
According to the report, MIS-A is a severe illness that targets multiple organs and causes increased inflammation in the body.
As with children, the adults who presented with MIS-A either test positive for SARS-CoV-2, or they have antibodies, which means that they have been infected with the virus in the past.
The CDC received reports of at least 935 cases of children with MIS-C, including 19 fatalities – including teens and young adults.
Recently, a similar syndrome has been observed in adults, and the CDC refers to 27 cases from the United States and the United Kingdom.

A life support technique called ECMO has saved the lives of many critically ill Covid-19 patients, a new study shows.
The ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine takes over the function of the lungs and heart. Blood is pumped from the body into equipment that adds oxygen to the blood before it’s returned to the body.
This technique has saved lives in previous epidemics of lung-damaging viruses, but small studies published early in the coronavirus pandemic questioned its effectiveness.
This international study included 1 035 Covid-19 patients at high risk of death because ventilators and other types of care couldn’t support their lungs.
After being placed on ECMO, the death rate among these patients was less than 40%, according to the study authors.
“These results from hospitals experienced in providing ECMO are similar to past reports of ECMO-supported patients, with other forms of acute respiratory distress syndrome or viral pneumonia,” said co-author Dr Ryan Barbaro, of the University of Michigan.

Zanele Ngcoko, also known as “Chef Zan” in Gugulethu, Cape Town, was diagnosed with Covid-19 in May after she had trouble breathing.
“I’d take five steps but it would feel like I’d taken like one hundred steps to get to the bathroom,” she told News24.
At the hospital, x-rays of her chest revealed that she had pneumonia in her lungs and she was sent to the Groote Schuur Hospital for a Covid-19 test.
“It felt like I was literally dying in that moment, you know, when they tell you because there are so many family friends that have passed on due to Covid,” she said.
She spent nine days recovering at an isolation facility set up at the Lagoon Beach Hotel and when she returned home, her employer, told her she would be retrenched. Ngcoko worked as a chef at a catering company.
She said she expected the news and because of this, came up with a back-up plan.

Boris Johnson’s scientific advisers want him to introduce “drastic” new lockdown measures after the number of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations surged in the UK.
“We are starting to get to a point where we really will have to take really critical action,” Professor John Edmunds, a member of the government’s scientific advisory group said on Tuesday.
“These local restrictions that have been put in place in much of the north of England really haven’t been very effective,” Edmunds told the BBC’s Newsnight programme.
“We need to take much more stringent measures, not just in the north of England, we need to do it countrywide, and bring the epidemic back under control.”
Edmunds said that the government should introduce further national restrictions to replace the patchwork of local measures currently in place across the UK.
the most stringent measures, including a ban on household mixing indoors, have been enforced across much of northern England where the rate of infection is highest. But they do not appear to have worked, with new daily cases in cities including Manchester, Liverpool, and Newcastle soaring in the past seven days.

The coronavirus outbreak at the White House is the worst to hit any major seat of government, an analysis by Business Insider has found.
The US is not alone in having the core of its central government stricken by Covid-19, nor is it the only country to have its national leader test positive.
But the number of senior US officials, along with their high level of seniority, makes the outbreak among the Trump Administration the worst so far.
Politico has counted 34 people who tested positive since President Donald Trump announced he had Covid-19 on October 1.
Many were guests at Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination ceremony, at which social distancing was not observed and almost nobody wore masks. The event is now being scrutinized as a possible “super-spreader” event, as Business Insider’s Aylin Woodward and Susie Neilson reported.
Among them are 16 senior figures in the Trump administration. They include First Lady Melania Trump, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, Senior Adviser Steven Miller, and former Governor Chris Christie. And, of course, there is the president himself.

• Practise respiratory hygiene – cover your mouth with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Remember to dispose the tissue immediately after use.

Amid the spate of problems blocking the way of Andy Murray and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson as they attempt to revive their careers to a level resembling something of the past is a growing group of young guns with blistering talent.
And demonstrating in no small measure how this young brigade with exceptional talent, vast potential and an awesome level of fitness is making its presence felt with a growing degree of awe is the manner 22-year-old Russian dynamo Andrey Rublev not only beat Anderson in the current French Open at Roland Garros, but crushed the 6ft 8in South African with a degree of disdain in his 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 third round victory.
Rublev broke Anderson’s renowned serve no fewer than five times in the one-sided match, never looked like dropping his own service once and dominated most of the torrid rallies almost as a formality.
Even more of a one-sided exercise was Stan Wawrinka’s 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 first round demolition at Roland Garros that left Murray bothered, bewildered, and well-nigh embarrassed.
With three Grand Slam titles to his credit, six further Grand Slam final appearances and a short period as the world’s No 1, Britain’s 33-year-old Murray boasts an immense career record of far greater immensity than the impressive achievements of the 34-year-old Anderson, who has qualified for two Grand Slam finals and reached a ranking of fifth in the world for a brief period.
But presently there are distinct similarities about the declining careers of Murray and Anderson, who are both battling to make it into the world’s top 100 players, no less; both have been hampered in no small manner by recurring injuries in the past two years, which have required surgeries and found that increasing age has also seemingly proved a factor in blunting their prowess.
And now emerging on the horizon to further add to Murray and Anderson’s comeback attempt for a place of renewed ranking prominence is the emergence of such feared adversaries as Dominic Thiem, the recent US Open winner, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Denis Shapovalov, Diego Schwartzman, Felix Auger Aliassime, the 19-year-old Italian sensation, Jannik Sinner, who has already been touted as a future world No 1 – and, of course, Rublev as well in the elite group.
This depth in talent, added to present form guides, suggests there is little or no chance of Murray or Anderson again featuring among the world’s top 10 ranked players. Indeed a place among the top 20 would be quite an achievement.
Interestingly, all-time tennis legends Novak Djokovic (33) and Rafael Nadal (34) have thus far warded off the challenge to their status as the world’s No 1 and 2 players respectively.
But what of the iconic Roger Federer, who holds the record of most Grand Slam titles (20) ahead of Nadal (19) and Djokovic (17), when he makes his announced return to tennis at the age of 39 next year following an absence due to knee surgery?
Will he too find the young guns too hot to handle – much like Murray and Anderson!
A woman was allegedly raped by a cop.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating an allegation by a 24-year-old woman that she was raped while in custody at a KwaZulu-Natal police station.
According to IPID spokesperson Ndileka Cola, the rape allegedly occurred at the KwaMakhutha police station on 25 September.
Police officers had taken her to the station after removing her from a shop.

She was allegedly raped in one of the offices at the station, Cola said.
“IPID has resumed the investigation process, which includes visiting the crime scene to gather all the necessary evidence,” Cola said.
She said IPID had also visited the woman and taken her statement.
Cola said investigations into the matter were at an advanced stage and that IPID was working hard to ensure justice was served for the victim.

Pretoria, Tuesday 6 October 2020 – An employee of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) working in the Bloemfontein debt management office, was arrested yesterday (Monday 5 October) following a sting operation by the HAWKS for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a taxpayer.
The employee allegedly offered to write off a taxpayer’s tax debt in return for the payment of R20 000. SARS will be co-operating fully with the HAWKS in the investigation.
Commissioner Edward Kieswetter said that while SARS will not pre-empt the ongoing investigation, the organisation wished to state that it would not tolerate any of its officials engaging in any collusion with taxpayers neither any act of criminal malfeasance.
“Employees of SARS hold positions of privilege and trust, and are expected to display the highest levels of professionalism, act with utmost honesty and integrity, and apply the tax and customs laws competently, without any fear, favour and prejudice, he said. “We cannot stand by a fallow the hard work of many honest SARS employees to be undermined and compromised”
Commissioner Kieswetter added ”that all SARS employees should to keep their conduct beyond reproach in the service of the country and its people in line with Vision 2024, which seeks to build a SARS with unquestionable integrity that can be trusted and admired by Government and the Public. Any actions that distracts from achieving this vision has no place in SARS”
The arrested person will appear in court tomorrow (Wednesday).
