Toronto – Kevin Anderson suffered an agonising loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals of the Toronto Masters on Saturday.
The Greek young gun, who turns 20 on Sunday, defeated the South African fourth seed 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (9/7).
It was a tightly-contested battle that went down to the wire, with Tsitsipas claiming the only break of serve in the match in the second set.
Tsitsipas squandered two match points leading 6-4 in the final set tie-break, before saving a match point at 6-7 down in the shootout. He eventually claimed victory on his third match point.
Both players were looking to reach their maiden final at Masters 1000 level.
In Sunday’s final, Tsitsipas will face the winner of the later match between world No 1 Rafael Nadal and Russia’s Karen Khachanov.
The spirit of Nelson Mandela has inspired ten-year-old Retshegofaditswe Hatang to soar to new heights – to the very top of Mount Kilimanjaro to be exact.
“He started his summit on August 5 marking the day of Madiba’s capture back in 1962 and summitted on August 9 celebrating Women’s Day and MaSisulu’s centenary,” his father – and the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang – told New24 on Saturday.
Retshegofaditswe, or Tshego for short, explained that he was inspired to complete the incredible feat to raise funds for caring4girls programme which provides sanitary equipment for schoolgirls.
“My mom told me they miss school because of sanitary pads,” explained the budding social activist – adding that he hoped girls would now get the right assistance to be able to complete their education.
He said that the highlight of the hike was “seeing the snow!”
Although very cold and tired, reaching the summit, was quite simply “great” he added.
Tshego said that his message to other young people was to “dream big and not give up on their dreams”.
His father had been his biggest help on the expedition – and his message to his dad was: “Thank you and I love you.”
Hatang explained that Tshego had been hiking for about three years, exploring Drakensberg, Suikerbos, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and others.
Hatang Junior and Senior were part of a team which was led by Sibusiso Vilane and included Samsung CEO Sung Yoon and Richard Mabaso, founder of the Imbumba Foundation which is involved in the provision of sanitary pads for schoolgirls.
Hatang said he had learnt a lot from his son’s journey on the mountain:
“I learned that we must always encourage our children to achieve their hopes and dreams. We must not allow our spirit of giving up to influence them. During the summit, I tried three times to get him to quit as he was too cold.”
“I’m glad I listened to wise counsel from Sibusiso Vilane, Richard Mabaso and the guides. Particularly the three guides who carried him for part of the way when his feet couldn’t carry him anymore.”
“They proved that at our lowest moments, we need others to carry us on their shoulders,” mused Hatang.
A beached dolphin was rescued and returned to the water in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
“At 07:20…NSRI Station 6 Port Elizabeth were alerted to a dolphin stranded on Cape Recife beach,” said NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram in a statement.
“Sea Rescue Volunteers, Bay World staff and members of the Nelson Mandela Bay Marine Animal Stranding Network responded straight to the scene where they found a Common Dolphin well up on the beach.”
The female dolphin was placed on a special stretcher and taken to the sea rescue station. A boat was then prepared to take her back into the water.
“We transported her approximately 4 nautical miles out to sea where she was released.”
“We are cautiously optimistic that she will survive the ordeal,” said Port Elizabeth NSRI Station Commander Ian Gray.
Pleasuring yourself is the safest, simplest, most easily satisfying kind of “sex”. But it has a complicated stigma attached to it; everybody is doing it, but not everybody talks about it.
As children, some of us were told that masturbation causes blindness, and we still have a way to go before masturbation is seen as a healthy, normal part of women’s sexuality.
Don’t forget to take our sex survey – you could stand the chance of winning R5 000 in cash!
For every proud proclaimer of solitary sex there’s another who offers a disclaimer like, “I was desperate, bored or too tired for intercourse.” We need to stop thinking of masturbation as an excuse and see it for what it is. Here, the facts, excerpted from Getting Off by Jamye Waxman.
1. It’s more acceptable for men
Our vulvas are not perceived as the veritable joystick his penis is, and so we look down at our genitals as if they were second-class citizens. We’re taught that our vaginas are for making babies and not for sexual pleasure, and nobody teaches us about our clitoris, therefore we believe we’re designed to be less sexual than men are.
But the truth is, we’re not. Yes, we’re different – we have monthly cycles and our bodies can more easily align with the moon – but that only goes to prove our bodies are sacred temples and we need to worship them as such.
2. It’s a poor substitute for being coupled-up
Society perpetuates the idea that we aren’t complete unless one plus one equals two; that we are supposed to sacrifice our individuality when we enter into a relationship. But as we grow up, we come to understand that happiness does not come from somebody else; we are responsible for meeting our needs and fulfilling our desires.
At the same time, more and more women have abandoned antiquated gender stereotypes. We’re finding ways to support ourselves financially, emotionally and sexually. We’re searching for orgasms with and without partners, and we don’t expect our partners to teach us everything we need to know about our sexuality.
3. It’s not cool to masturbate if you’re in a relationship
Yes, masturbation is solo sex, but that doesn’t mean you have to be alone to do it. Single people masturbate, obviously, but statistics show that women in relationships masturbate more often than their single counterparts, especially women with healthy sex lives.
The time you spend alone with yourself is very different from the time you spend focusing on both of you. And it’s time well spent – learning things about your body that your partner may not be able to discover without your help.
A 2007 Australian study showed that 55% of single women orgasm every time they masturbate, while only 25% of women orgasm with a partner. So why deny yourself more orgasms? Besides, women who masturbate are aroused more often than women who don’t. Unless you’re using masturbation as a crutch and a way to avoid sex with your partner, it’s totally cool to get it on alone.
