News24.com | Cape taxi strike called off
The violent taxi strike that saw at least three buses set alight in the Western Cape on Monday has been called off.
ANC member of provincial parliament Cameron Dugmore told News24 that the strike was called off after the party engaged with the Minibus Taxi Industry Task Team (MTITT) on Monday evening at Cosatu offices in Cape Town.
“They agreed to end the strike on our request and our commitment to bring the affected parties together,” said Dugmore.
Taxi association CATA also informed commuters of the end of the strike in a Facebook post on Monday night.
According to eNCA, Achmat Dyason, advisor to MTITT confirmed the decision to call off the strike came as a result of the intervention of the provincial ANC.
Buses were set alight in Khayelitsha in the early hours of Monday morning, and thousands of commuters were left stranded.
WATCH: Bus torched in Khayelitsha ahead of taxi strike
Cape Town fire and rescue services spokesperson Theo Layne had earlier said a bus was set alight in a protest-related incident, in Shushu Crescent, Khayelitsha, just before 05:00.
City of Cape Town director for Traffic and Law Enforcement Robbie Roberts had reported that two Golden Arrow buses were set alight.
He said one was set on fire next to False Bay College in Lingelethu West, while another was on fire in Tutu Avenue, Makhaza.
Western Cape taxi drivers had embarked on a strike in a dispute over a conference which was supposed to have been held to resolve a leadership dispute over the provincial arm of the South African National Taxi Council.
On June 6 the Western Cape High Court ordered that Santaco convene a conference to resolve the Western Cape taxi industry’s issues over leadership and differences over clauses in Santaco’s constitution.
News24.com | Agri SA to keep eye on ANC’s plans around expropriation of 139 farms
South Africa’s largest organised farmers’ body will keep an eye on the ANC’s plans to target 139 farms in test cases for expropriation without compensation and will go to the Constitutional Court if necessary, it says.
On Sunday, City Press reported that the ANC had identified 139 farms to be expropriated without compensation in the coming weeks in an attempt to test section 25 of the Constitution.
“Agri SA will closely monitor this situation and will be involved in test cases where principles of compensation will be clarified,” Dan Kriek, Agri SA’s president said in a statement on Monday.
“Agri SA has already been involved in such matters and will not hesitate to do it again. It is the courts’ duty to interpret legislation and the Constitution.”
Agri SA’s priority is to get more clarity on which farms will be targeted.
It says the principle of compensation for expropriation is recognised internationally, although there are different standards for remuneration. Internationally, expropriation without compensation is only permitted in very limited circumstances.
“It would be extremely unfair and unacceptable to target farmers, who use land productively to feed the people of South Africa, by taking away their property without compensating them,” said Kriek.
Agri SA will go to the Constitutional Court, if necessary, to defend the principles of equity and protection of the rights of the individual, reads the statement.
Sport24.co.za | Rassie to unleash Bok bolter for Durban?
Cape Town – With Duane Vermeulen not available for the Rugby Championship, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will have to field a new-look loose trio for next Saturday’s tournament opener against Argentina in Durban.
On the surface, the fit-again Warren Whiteley seems the most natural replacement at the back of the scrum. But, listening to Erasmus speak in Stellenbosch on Monday, things could be a little more complicated than that.
Siya Kolisi, confirmed as captain for the Rugby Championship, is the only one guaranteed a start in the loose trio, though it is looking increasingly likely that he will make the move from openside to blindside flank.
The addition of two new squad members – the uncapped Marco van Staden and Bok veteran Francois Louw – means that Erasmus now has two new options at No 6.
While a Whiteley/Kolisi/Louw starting loose trio would move Pieter-Steph du Toit back to the second row, it seems the most natural fit.
Van Staden, however, is the possible bolter.
It has become abundantly clear how highly Erasmus rates the 22-year-old; so much so that he was the coach’s first-choice to wear the No 6 jersey in the June Tests against England.
As fate would have it, Van Staden went down with a knee injury while on Super Rugby duty for the Bulls against the Brumbies in the final match before the international break.
Now, he is fit and firing, and Erasmus is keen to get him involved.
“Marco probably would have started in the England Test matches as the first-choice and then the match before that series, the last one that the Bulls played, his knee went,” Erasmus said.
“Since then he’s been playing as an out-and-out opensider like Francois Louw and Heinrich Brussow and those guys. It’s nice to have somebody like that in the fold.”
Louw himself will be the favourite to start at openside in Durban, though Erasmus hinted strongly at the 33-year-old’s ability to play at No 8 too.
The coach pointed to the role that Louw played in last year’s 25-24 loss to the All Blacks at Newlands, adding that it might open the door for him to start alongside Van Staden.
“Having guys being able to contest on the ground like Malcolm (Marx), Flo and Marco … we might play them together at some stage,” Erasmus said.
“Flo played a wonderful game at No 8 when we lost to New Zealand at Newlands. He’s pretty versatile, so they might be in the same starting line-up, depending who the opposition is.”
On Kolisi’s likely move to No 7, Erasmus had no concerns.
“When Siya started out playing he was this lanky flanker who almost played like Warren (Whiteley). He was bigger than the other boys, but he ran on those outside channels,” Erasmus explained.
“He’s taught himself the role of a genuine open-sider. He’s brilliant over the ball and is a great counter-rucker, but probably not of the best poachers or at slowing the opposition ball.
“With his lineout ability, he is probably a good option as a blindside flanker.
“He will always be in the team. It’s nice to have a guy like that and then build other guys around him. He’ll probably play a few games at blindside.”
The likeliest loose forward combination for Durban remains Whiteley/Kolisi/Louw, but don’t be surprised at all if Erasmus takes the bold step to include another uncapped youngster in Van Staden.
3 August 2018 – SARS customs makes major busts of drugs and currency within days
Pretoria, 03 August 2018 – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs division made a bust of multiple currency and drugs at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA). This was the latest in a string of illicit/illegal goods busts, valued at close to R15 million.
On Monday 30 July, risks were identified regarding two non-related male passengers, who were possibly in possession of excess currency travelling to Dubai. The travellers were intercepted, attempting to leave RSA and were questioned.
The travellers, in both instances, then admitted that they were in possession of currency. Upon further questioning, the two passengers could not provide explanations or evidence as to how they had acquired the currency. They were escorted off and taken to the Customs control area where their respective luggage was searched.
Upon inspection of the first passenger’s luggage, currency (USD464 650) equivalent to R6 114 794 was found concealed in paper wrapped with brown tape. The currency was confiscated, and the passenger handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigations.
During the inspection of the second passenger, currency (USD 234 000) equivalent to R3 079 440 was found also concealed in paper wrapped with brown tape. The currency was confiscated, and the passenger handed over to the SAPS for further investigations as well.
SARS appreciates the high level of active collaboration between ACSA, SAPS, DHA, Asset Forfeiture Unit (NPA) and the State Security Agency (SSA), which leads to such effective detections and successful prosecutions of passengers.
On 31 July 2018, a shipment from South Africa destined for the UK was profiled for examination at Couriers, when a Customs detector dog reacted positively. The shipment had been declared as ‘Car Parts General’, however, upon physical examination of the contents, a booster charger was found which felt unusually heavy.
The part was X-rayed and square shaped image impressions were observed, which led to the part being dismantled, revealing 15 blocks concealing a white powdery substance which was wrapped with black rubber and foil. The powder was analysed and it tested positive for cocaine. The goods weighed 16kg, which has an estimated value of R4 800 000. The shipment was handed over to SAPS (DPCI) for further investigation.
In another incident, a parcel declared as books, also from South Africa to Australia, was intercepted at Couriers by the Detector Dog Unit when a detector dog reacted positively. Upon inspection, four books were found containing sheets of plastic with a white powdery substance. A drug testing kit was administered and tested positive for cocaine. The goods weighed 2.5kg, which has an estimated value of R750 000. They were handed over to SAPS for further investigations.
Furthermore, on the 28 July 2018, a Brazilian female passenger expelled several “cocaine bullets” with an estimated value of R285 000. She was intercepted whilst disembarking from Sao Paulo to Johannesburg, and intercepted when the information was received. The passenger was questioned and her luggage was searched with nothing suspicious, however risk indicators suggested that the passenger might be a drug mule. The passenger was taken to the hospital and an X-ray was conducted, which revealed foreign objects in her abdomen. The passenger was handed over to SAPS for further investigation.
In another search, a parcel with no documentation was intercepted at Couriers by the Detector Dog Unit. Upon inspection, plastic containers concealing 250 Cannabis Heads, with an estimated value of R25 000 were found. The goods were also handed over to SAPS for further investigations.
In another interception, a parcel from South Africa to Dubai was intercepted at Couriers by the Detector Dog Unit. Upon inspection, a magazine was found concealing two travel documents, valued at R1 400. The goods were handed over to SAPS for further investigations.
Another male passenger disembarking from Addis Ababa to Johannesburg was intercepted. During questioning, the passenger could not verify where he was travelling to. His passport indicated that he had been in Singapore where he obtained his visa. The passenger was taken to the immigration inspectorate office for an interview, where the visa was identified as fraudulent. He was then refused entry into South Africa, and will be returned to his country.
SARS Customs officers, together with rest of the country’s enforcement agencies, will continue to remain on high alert and vigilant at all ports of entries to stem the tide of illicit/illegal goods coming through or out of our borders.
