Shailene Woodley went the distance to portray a woman stranded at sea in her latest film Adrift.
Woodley, 26, opened up about her rigorous diet for the film in which she plays Tami Oldham, who found herself adrift on a stricken boat alongside her injured fiancé.
“For the last two weeks I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day — 350 calories,” Woodley told The Times of her strict diet for the film. “It was f—— miserable.”
While Woodley gave the performance her all, the diet took a toll on her body and her sleep patterns.
“I can’t sleep when I’m hungry so I would have a glass of wine to basically pass the f— out,” she said.
Adrift is based on a true story of Oldham (played by Woodley) and her fiancé Robert (played by Sam Claflin) as they sail from Tahiti to San Diego. In the process, they encounter a hurricane that destroys their boat and sets them adrift in the ocean. With Robert injured, it’s up to Oldham to get them ashore.
Claflin, 32, opened up to PeopleNOW about the experience of shooting a film while at sea, saying he and Woodley were often seasick.
“We were holding each other’s hair back,” Claflin said. “It was the best way to kind of get to know someone. When you see someone with sick around their mouth, it’s bizarrely a great opportunity to break the ice.”
Adrift is now in theaters.
Less than a quarter of Americans are meeting all national physical activity guidelines, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
Federal physical activity guidelines recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week, in addition to muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week. But according to the new NCHS report, which drew on five years of data from the National Health Interview Survey, only about 23% of adults ages 18 to 64 are hitting both of those marks. Another 32% met one but not both, and almost 45% did not hit either benchmark.
Those numbers fluctuated somewhat depending on gender, occupation and home state. More men (roughly 27%) than women (almost 19%) met both guidelines, and both genders saw slightly higher percentages among working adults (almost 29% and 21%, respectively).
The authors also added that people working in managerial or “professional” positions were more likely than individuals in production roles, such as assembly and manufacturing, to meet the standards. However, the report looked only at leisure-time physical activity, so adults who log exercise through active jobs or commutes were not included in the findings.
Some states saw adherence rates well above the national average, while others were well below. Colorado led the pack, with 32.5% of adults meeting both federal exercise guidelines. In Mississippi, just 13.5% of adults reported meeting both exercise guidelines.
With some exceptions, states on the West Coast and in the Northeast tended to have higher percentages of residents meeting the guidelines than states in the South. Residents of states in the Southeast had particularly low rates. High levels of unemployment and disability or poor health in a state were correlated with lower rates of meeting exercise guidelines, the researchers found.
In all, the results suggest that most Americans should try to squeeze more exercise into their time off, given its well-established connections to everything from chronic disease prevention to mental and cognitive health benefits.
Cape Town – Former Proteas batsman Neil McKenzie is set to join Bangladesh as a batting consultant during their tour to the West Indies.
The Tigers are currently without a batting coach after Thilan Samaraweera left the role with McKenzie scheduled to start in a consultancy role on July, 7.
The 42-year-old McKenzie, who played 58 Tests, 64 ODIs and two T20Is, served two terms as the Proteas batting coach in 2016 and 2018.
Bangladesh will play two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is in the Caribbean with McKenzie set to miss the first Test which starts on Wednesday.
A Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesperson told Cricbuzz: “We are expecting his arrival during the upcoming Test series against West Indies.
“We are confident that his vast experience will help our team, and our batsmen in particular.”
The Tigers also have new head coach for the Windies tour with former England international Steve Rhodes taking over the role that has been vacant since October last year.
A 31-year-old man was arrested after he was caught by the Gauteng Traffic Police’s High Speed Unit driving at breakneck speed in a Mercedes Benz E350 on Saturday.
The driver, who claims to work at Mercedes Benz, was driving at 210 km/h on R21 near Olifantsfontein because he wanted to be on time for a wedding.
“The speedster was arrested on the spot and taken to Olifantsfontein Police Station where he was formally charged with reckless driving and exceeding the prescribed speed limit of 120km/h on a freeway,” Gauteng Department of Community Safety spokesperson Ofentse Morwane said.
“The man was later released on R 1000 bail and will appear in Tembisa Magistrate Court shortly.”
The Department of Community Safety condemned bad driving behavior and conduct displayed by Gauteng drivers.
“Reckless driving and excessive speeding is one of the major contributors of fatal crashes the roads in the province,” Morwane said.
“Gauteng Traffic Police and other law enforcement agencies will continue to deal decisively with those who do not adhere to the rules of the road particularly given the high rate of fatalities that the province continues to experience.”

JOHANNESBURG – A three-year-old girl was killed and two adult women were injured when they were knocked down by a car alongside Nasrec Road in Riverlea, Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon, paramedics said.
Paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the scene soon after 4pm, where they found two women and the little girl lying on the side of the road, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.
“Bystanders explained that a vehicle collided with them. All three landed in a nearby storm water drain. The bystanders removed them and brought them back up to the road’s surface while waiting for emergency services.”
Upon assessment, paramedics found that the three-year-old girl sustained fatal injuries. Sadly, there was nothing that could be done for her and she was declared dead on the scene.
A woman, believed to be the child’s mother, was found with serious injuries. She was treated on the scene for possible head and chest injuries before being taken to a nearby hospital. Another woman, believed to the woman’s sister, sustained moderate injuries. She was also treated on the scene and was transported to a hospital. The driver of the car was not injured. Local authorities attended the scene and would investigate, Vermaak said

Regional office bearers for the Gauteng African National Congress (ANC) were elected during regional conferences that began on Friday.
Regional conferences are expected to conclude on Sunday, excluding the Sedibeng region conference, which started on Saturday. The Sedibeng regional conference is expected to continue overnight.
Meetings were halted earlier this month because of “outstanding matters”.
The elected regional leadership collective was congratulated by the party and have been mandated “to champion the implementation of radical socio-economic transformation in the regions of Ekurhuleni and Greater Johannesburg”.
“We appreciate the manner in which delegates from all the regions exercised discipline and ensured that they hold productive conferences,” ANC regional spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said.
