Minister Nhleko Addresses Youth Career Expo
The Eastern Cape Department of Education in partnership with The Department of Public works hosted a Career Expo at the Bele Zingcuka Technical College Decant classes in Tsolo, OR Tambo Inland District.
About 300 pupils from Bel eZingcuka Technical School, Bele Primary School and St Cuthbert’s Senior Secondary School attended the career expo, meant to show cast different career options to young pupils in the Rural District from various invited sister departments, namely Department of Health, Department of Labour, South African Police Services Forensic division and many more.
Public works Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko encouraged pupils to pursue careers in construction. “The government is building schools, hospitals, clinics and sports fields and that is where engineers and architects will be needed,” said Nhleko. “The built environment has lots of opportunities for young people because there is always work to be done in that sector, therefore this career expo seeks to provide information about the pupils’ careers choices, as well as the bursaries and internship programmes we offer.”
Mjikelo Mnge, the Bele Zingcuka Technical School Principal gave the Minister a very warm welcome and hoped that this would not be his last to the rural area. He further said that the Technical College has 277 pupils from Grade 8 to 12 for the year 2018 and offers subjects like Civil technology, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Technology. Zingcuka explained that the school equip pupils will skills whilst still at a younger age and give young-ones direction for better career options and to be able to be employers then being employed. He also said that, “The school matric pass rate has dropped from 63% in 2016 to 43.6% in 2017 due to redeployment of teachers, not enough resources”. “For example we do not have a Mathematics teacher, he was redeployed recently and we would like the ECDoE to assist on employing one for us”. Another challenge that they are facing is the issue of burglary due to poor fencing, he said that computers and other machinery have been stolen from the school and ask the department to assist them.
Bele Zingcuka pupil Yamkela Ndzangasaid “privileged to be part of this expo, I have a better knowledge about different careers but mostly interested in the Public Works Capacity Building Programmes”. The grade 12 pupil is doing Civil Technology but the challenge is that the school does not have proper practical facilities therefore he would be delighted if the Department of Education can provide one for them.Whilst Zozibini Tsawe said “I have been very passionate working with electrical work at a younger age, therefore the school has given have the skill to acquire my dreams for becoming a professional electrician”.

7 Tips to Shovel Snow Safely and Efficiently (and Even Turn It Into a Workout)
Clearing the driveway after a snowstorm isn't only a pain in the butt, it can actually be dangerous if you don't do it carefully. Moving a heavy shovel full of snow repeatedly without proper form can put you at risk of injury.
"Most people don't use long levers, like shovels, to lift and throw weight," says Michelle Lovitt, an exercise physiologist in Los Angeles (who grew up shoveling snow in the Midwest). "Shoveling snow increases a person's risk for low-back and shoulder injuries because of the weight and imbalance of snow and generally poor posture when shoveling."
RELATED: Stop a Cold in Its Tracks
The physical exertion required to haul weighty, wet snow also isn't for the faint of art: Research has found that risk of heart attack is higher in the few days after heavy snowfalls.
Why is the winter chore so tough on the body? "The intense aerobic work is a tremendous stress on the heart, and the cold is an additional stressor," says Christine Lawless, MD, a sports cardiologist in Chicago. "Your blood vessels constrict because your body is trying to conserve heat, and now the heart has to work even harder to try and pump blood through those constricted blood vessels."
Another big mistake people make: throwing a jacket over thin pajamas and heading outdoors immediately. "It's absolutely a horrible idea to jump out of bed and start shoveling snow," Lovitt warns. "Your body needs time to increase blood flow before beginning activity," she explains. "This will allow you to move and bend more easily, reducing risk of injury."

Adds Dr. Lawless: "You also get some people who are not necessarily in shape or used to doing aerobic exercise, and suddenly they go out in the snow and they perform at their maximum level, which is incredibly dangerous."
With these scary snow situations in mind, apply the following advice next time you head out to shovel.
Do a proper warm-up
If you just woke up, wait 45 minutes to an hour before shoveling. But before you shovel at any point in the day, move through a quick dynamic warm-up to "wake up" all the right muscles, says Lovitt. "A great warm-up people can do is knee grabs—standing and pulling each knee to your chest alternating—for 12 to 15 reps on each side and large arm circles forward and back for a few reps," she says.
Dr. Lawless also suggests getting your heart pumping by walking at 2.5 miles per hour on the treadmill for one mile before you head outside.

Fire up the right muscles
"When you think about the biomechanics of shoveling snow, the biggest challenge of the movement is taken on by the muscles and joints of the back of the body," explains Cris Dobrosielski, a certified strength and conditioning specialist and spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise. The neck, shoulders, and low back in particular get pulled forward as you drive the shovel into the snow, and they have to work together to stabilize your body. "It's really a form of resistance training," Dobrosielski says.
Just before you lift a shovel full of snow, think about two main things: keeping your knees slightly bent at all times, which takes some of the tension off of the low back, and hinging at the hips. "Draw in the navel slightly, keep your back straight and abdominals engaged, and shift your hips back slightly, which will help turn on the glutes and hamstrings, where most of the power should come from," Dobrosielski explains. "Then brace your body from this position while you drive the shovel into the snow and lift and throw."
While you're in this position, you want to remind yourself to constantly keep your core engaged, Lovitt adds. "Brace your midsection as if you were going to take a punch to the stomach."

Hold the shovel correctly
Keep a wide grip on the shovel handle—with one hand near the top of the handle and the other close to the actual shovel full of snow—so that you have better control of the heavy load. Also, keep the shovel as close to your body as possible as you carry it.
"You have a mechanical advantage when you keep the lever arm of the shovel and the weight of the load close to your body," Dobrosielski says. "The closer the load is to your center of gravity, the less strain and discomfort you are putting on every muscle and joint involved in that movement."
Don't twist and throw
What does bad form look like? To start, you shouldn't be rounding your shoulders and dropping your back to lift the snow without engaging your legs and glutes—or using your lower back to lift the snow in the shovel (but you know that now). But another huge mistake is twisting or hyperextending your back to propel and throw the snow off the shovel.
RELATED: Best and Worst Exercises to Do When You Have a Cold
"You may need to twist your torso a little bit to maneuver the snow, but you should really be thinking about turning your entire body with the shovel in the direction that you want to drop the snow and gently tip the shovel for the snow to drop off," Dobrosielski explains. "You shouldn't have to twist a lot, and you should never be throwing snow from the shovel up by your shoulders. The shovel can stay at or below your waist."
And when you can, don't even lift the snow; just plow it to the side.
Take breaks
"When fatigue sets in, this is when injuries tend to happen," Lovitt cautions. So keep your snow-shoveling intervals short and sweet, taking breaks whenever you need to.
"I wouldn't suggest going outside for more than 40 minutes at a time," Dobrosielski says. "And I would break that up until two 20-minute periods for fit people, and even four 10-minute intervals for more sedentary people."
Another tip: Keep the scoops small. "You may think it makes more sense to scoop these huge heavy piles to move more snow more quickly, but this will tire most people out faster than just doing more reps with little piles," he adds.

Strength train regularly
If you want to shovel more efficiently and protect yourself each time you do it, it makes sense to build up your total body strength in general. "If you break the snow-shoveling movement into different parts, you'll actually probably recognize a lot of traditional functional movement exercises," Dobrosielski points out.
The foundation of the shoveling movement is a squat, he notes. "So adding squats and lunges to your workout routine is excellent for building up your lower body strength for shoveling, and for any lifestyle activity that involves heavy lifting," he continues (such as lifting a suitcase into the overhead on a plane, or carrying a heavy laundry basket up the stairs).
While you shovel, you also experience slight torso rotation as you move around carrying the shovel. "So doing a standing torso rotation with a dumbbell or using a cable machine is another exercise that can help you build strength and stability for shoveling," Dobrosielski says.
Other strength moves to add to your routine that will help make you the best snow shoveler in your neighborhood: deadlifts, standing bent-over rows, lateral dumbbell raises, and standing hay-balers with a medicine ball.
Do three to five sets of eight to 12 reps of each move when you add them to your routine, Dobrosielski recommends. "But even doing a single set of 15 reps of any of these moves once per week would have value," he says.

Make shoveling snow a workout
If you're shoveling snow properly, you'll work your glutes, hamstrings, quads, abs, low back, upper back, and shoulders. "It's the absolute best workout," Lovitt says. Once you get into the swing of things and nail your form, you can really start to make it a double-duty chore and up the fitness factor.
"Do lunges or squats into each shovel of snow," Lovitt says. You can also carry the piles of snow farther down the driveway to get extra steps in if you're feeling ambitious.
One caveat: If you're recovering from a heart attack or have known risk factors for cardiovascular disease, do not shovel snow without clearance from your doctor.
Sport24.co.za | Deathbed to Olympic glory for Canadian snowboarder
Pyeongchang – Eleven months ago Mark McMorris was fighting for his life after breaking 17 bones and suffering a collapsed lung and ruptured spleen in a snowboarding accident.
On Sunday he won Olympic bronze.
The 24-year-old staked an early claim for the most inspirational story at the Pyeongchang Winter Games in the snowboard slopestyle, sealing third behind compatriot Max Parrot, in silver, and Amercian teenage gold medallist Red Gerard.
McMorris’s remarkable feat after cheating death did not go unnoticed by US ski “queen” Lindsey Vonn, who tweeted a split photo, one half of the Canadian in a hospital bed with numerous tubes attached to him and the other showing him smiling and a superimposed bronze medal.
“This is amazing!” Vonn tweeted to her 987 000 followers.
Talking after winning bronze, McMorris reflected on his journey from near-death to worldwide headline maker.
“I don’t want to think too much about the past today, but I appreciate the fact I’m here on my snowboard,” he said.
“Whatever the outcome was today, just me being pumped on being able to ride a snowboard.
“I think a lot of time I need to pinch myself because now I feel so good and comfortable on my board, but eight months ago I probably didn’t think I was going to be able to snowboard at this level ever again.
“It’s all good from my standpoint. I’m just lucky to be here.”
McMorris’s heroics were recognised by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who tweeted: “What a journey back to the podium for Mark McMorris.
“Mark – your tenacity & courage inspire so many of us.“
McMorris’s career had been very much on the upwards trajectory. He won bronze at Sochi 2014 and boasted numerous Winter X Games golds.
But in March 2017, McMorris, raised on the flatlands of the Canadian province Saskatchewan, sustained multiple injuries in a snowboarding accident when he hit a tree
His multiple fractures included to his jaw, left arm, pelvis and ribs and he was placed in a medically induce coma.
McMorris survived and in his comeback to competition, a big air World Cup in Beijing in November 2017, he triumphed.
After all that, he said Sunday that bronze felt like winning gold.
“Very much so, it is really cool that I can snowboard again,” he said.
“It’s not easy. The last two years I haven’t snowboarded that much. I broke my femur and had to take six, seven months off. Then I broke it all and had to take seven months off again.”
McMorris, who could have another chapter in his story when he goes in the big air competition in Pyeongchang, added: “I’ve been really stuck in the contest scene for a while, or on a death bed, so I’m pretty stoked.
“It does feel like a win.”

Sport24.co.za | Kohli: SA’s character got them the win
Cape Town – India captain Virat Kohli said South Africa deserved to win the fourth ODI at the Wanderers on Saturday as the home team kept themselves alive in the six-match ODI series.
The Proteas chased down a revised target of 202 in just 28 overs as the hosts won their first game in the series, which now sits at 3-1 to the tourists with two more games to play.
India posted 289/7 in their 50 overs after Kohli had won the toss and elected to bat first thanks to a ton in his 100th game by opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Kohli said at the post-match presentation: “You have to give credit to South Africa. I think they played with a lot of character in the end, they pulled through, they deserved to win.
“They are a quality side, we expected them to play quality cricket and they played well tonight.”
The India skipper though alluded to the fact that his team had to get a bigger total in their second innings as they were 197/2 with 15 overs still remaining in the innings when play was interrupted by rain.
When they returned the visitors lost both Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane and had to rebuild with new batsmen at the crease as South Africa kept pegging them back.
“After the break when Shikhar and Jinks (Ajinkya) came off the wicket played a bit differently, it wasn’t as good to bat after the break,” said Kohli.
“After the lightning break the guys felt with the weather getting cooler, the wicket got faster in the evening, and that continued through the innings, so I don’t think the guys quite settled in the later half.”
India need just one more win from the remaining two games, in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday and Centurion on Friday, to clinch the series.
News24.com | ‘Zuma is like SA’s Mugabe’ – call for nationwide shutdown if he isn’t recalled by nightfall
Pretoria – If President Jacob Zuma is not recalled by Sunday evening, a group claiming to comprise ANC and SACP members vowed they would take to the streets and march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to call for a national shutdown until he is ousted.
At a press briefing on Sunday, Hangwi Maumela, who claims to be an ANC branch member in Sandton, called for all South Africans to down tools on Monday until Zuma is removed as president of the country.
“We want everyone, on Monday, to stay away from work until Zuma steps down,” said Maumela.
“Tomorrow in all nine provinces, don’t go to work. Whether police, nurse, doctor, security guard, garden boy, working at border gate, don’t go to work. This crisis we are facing affects us all.”
He said they would not leave the Union Buildings until Zuma was no longer president.
“We are coming to the Union Buildings tomorrow and we are not apologetic about it, we are ready for everything.”
‘Mugabe of South Africa’
“This man is like Mugabe in South Africa. Some of us have suffered for this democracy. I feel Nelson Mandela, wherever he is, he is upset with Zuma, the (national executive committee) NEC and ANC for not exercising authority.”
Maumela said that they have written to the NEC pleading that Zuma be removed immediately, as well as calling on Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to not be threatened or ashamed to take authority and lead.
“Ramaphosa should not be apologetic and be afraid to ask the president to step down”, said Maumela.
He added that ANC members should be supporting one another in defeating those who are protecting and keeping Zuma in office.
Taking a swipe at ‘corrupt ministers’
“Those people are corrupt ministers. Comrade Cyril, during his campaign, promised us that he will root out corruption. He must start now and exercise those powers.”
Meanwhile, the ANC in the greater Johannesburg region distanced itself from what it referred to as “bogus ANC Johannesburg members”.
“The African National Congress in the Greater Johannesburg Region has noted persons who are, under the guise of being members of the ANC Joburg Region, calling for the immediate removal of President Jacob Zuma or a ‘National Shut Down’,” said regional spokesperson Jolidee Matongo.
“We call on any member(s) who may have any information on these individuals to please contact the region in order for a disciplinary process to be instituted against them immediately.”
The SACP in Gauteng also distanced itself from the planned protest action.”We further distance ourselves from the man who claims to hold a position in the SACP who took part in the press conference. The man does not represent the SACP and any of its structures. In fact the man is not known to any structures of the SACP and therefore doesn’t have a mandate to speak on our behalf,” said SACP provincial secretary Jacob Mamabolo.
The SACP said it would conduct a thorough investigation into the identity of the man who claimed to represent the party.”Whilst we reaffirm the principled and profound decision taken by the Central Committee calling on the ANC President Jacob Zuma to resign or be recalled by the ANC, we believe that this matter is well within the purview of our national leadership and it remain seized with the matter.”
The ANC NEC have been called to a special meeting in Pretoria on Monday afternoon, where it is believed that the agenda will be about Zuma’s exit as president.
eNCA | SA athlete attacked in alleged racist attack
JOHANNESBURG – Police are searching for the perpetrators who attacked South African 5000 metre champion Thabang Mosiako.
A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been opened.
The athlete and two friends were beaten up a week ago in Potchefstroom.
The attack started outside this popular student cafe.
Mosiako and two friends, Rantso Mokopane and Sandy Londt, were allegedly attacked by at least 10 people.
“They were swearing at the cashier. And I said, guys please don’t swear at the cashier and I’m in a hurry as well. Then I went outside, when I went outside these guys multiplied, called their friends, and started attacking us. My intention was not to fight,” said Mokopane.

Mokopane believes the attack was racially motivated and says it’s the fourth time he’s been targetted.
“If something more than this happened, I’m responsible for this guy. I’m preventing this from happening to your future kids, my future kids that are coming to the university. So I feel like this is the end of it, I don’t want it to happen to anybody else,” he added.
Mosiako, a top athlete, was admitted to hospital after his head was bashed on the ground and kicked.
There’s a possibility he could suffer long-term damage as a result.
“I have some injuries in my head, the doctor said I must come and fetch my what you call there in the hospital. Now I’m hoping to run good in the Africa Champs because I have a huge competition,” Mosiako said.
Professor Dan Kgwadi, vice chancellor of the North West University, says an investigation is underway to determine whether these attackers are students and who exactly they are.

eNCA | WATCH: Group of ANC members plan shutdown to pressure Zuma to quit
TSHWANE – A group of African National Congress members in Gauteng on Sunday announced a “national shutdown” to cripple Pretoria through demonstrations from Monday in a bid to put pressure on President Jacob Zuma to quit.
This is despite the Tshwane Metro police saying they did not approve its request to demonstrate.
The group of “concerned ANC members” from different regions in Gauteng, under the #ZumaMustGo campaign slogan, insisted on Sunday they would use all possible means to get Zuma out of the Union Buildings.
“We are being in the forefront because we love our movement. We love our organisation. Even if it means that we are [going to be] arrested, or beaten, or killed – we are ready for it tomorrow [Monday]. And we are not going to leave the Union Buildings, by the way, until he resigns,” leader of the #ZumaMustGo protest Lazarus Maumela told journalists in Pretoria.
“That is what we are going to do. We have made arrangements… we are sitting with about 60 buses now, and we know that before the end of the day, today [Sunday], we could be having 100 buses [coming to Pretoria]. We want thousands and thousands of people to come to this march. We are also going to be joined by a Pakistani group.”
Maumela vowed that the aggrieved ANC members would pull “the enemy” Zuma physically from the government offices if need be.
“We are coming to the Union Buildings tomorrow [Monday], and we are not apologetic about it. We are ready for everything. We have sat down with the police and all the leaders in Tshwane. We will address the people to say, do not give up on the ANC, we just have one enemy. We will root out that enemy. If it means we have to go the office and remove him, we will do that,” said Maumela.
“We cannot be defeated by a group of thugs, tsotsis, people whose intention is to corrupt this organisation. We are not afraid, even if the BLF come, we are ready. If they come with firearms, we will beat them physically.”
Meanwhile, the South African Communist Party distanced itself from the protest.
“We further distance ourselves from the man who claims to hold a position in the SACP who took part in the press conference. The man does not represent the SACP and any of its structures. In fact the man is not known to any structures of the SACP and therefore doesn’t have a mandate to speak on our behalf,” it said in a statement.
The ANC in Gauteng also distanced itself from the march.
“The ANC calls on its members, supporters and society at large not to heed this irresponsible and reckless call by these individuals who have no mandate to speak on behalf of the ANC or any of its members and structures,” the party said in a statement.
