Getting Into ‘Proposal Shape’ Is the Latest Fitness Trend—Here’s Why That’s a Problem
Quick, what comes to mind when you think of a marriage proposal? Probably a man on bended knee. Well, now you need to add a lady doing squats to that image of betrothal bliss. Because the new trend out there is something called “proposal shape.” Yes, that’s right: Before you’re a shredded bride, you now need to be a fit fiancée.
It’s no longer enough to be skinny when you say “I do.” A number of today’s women are pressuring themselves to be hard-bodied by the time they say “Yes.” As in, “Yes, I’ll marry you! Just let me do a few burpees before we take a selfie so I can tighten my glutes in this fantastically new, flattering bodycon dress I happened to throw on even though I had absolutely no idea you were going to propose this evening! Hold my kettlebell.”

Proposal shape is a tight and curvy metaphor for how out of whack our expectations of the whole wedding process are and the ridiculous pressure women place on themselves during the whole bridal experience. Girlfriends who are pre-fiancées—let’s call them “preancées”—are spending big bucks to hire trainers and take extra core fusion and yoga classes to achieve what they perceive as an engagement-ready BMI.
I have strong suspicions that a man who wants to ask his girlfriend to spend the rest of their lives together truly doesn’t care—and may not even notice—if she’s dropped five pounds in anticipation. It’s safe to say that a woman focused on getting into proposal shape is doing it for herself. I think I can speak for most women when I say we’re excellent at convincing ourselves we need to alter the way we look in order to be worthy of a milestone. The girlfriend furiously attaining proposal shape thinks she’s not enough, or, rather, in the case of her body, is too much.

And maybe, just maybe, she’s thinking of her followers on social media. As a married lady (married twice, in fact), I’m relieved that my engagements took place before I was on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I’m in my 40s, and I got married and became a mother in my 40s, and I’m astonished by the compulsion brides have today to make every step of their relationship journey public. Not just public, but attractive, shiny, and filtered to perfection.
I’ve always thought the romance of a proposal comes from its intimacy, not from any kind of dramatic ring reveal or surprise wrangling of family and friends. Something about that life-changing promise to each other wants to be quiet and shouldn't call for spectacle—including a spectacular body, no matter how hard-won.
Granted, there are those who want to drop weight and bolster strength for health reasons, which is a laudable goal. When you’re headed to the altar (or chuppah or courthouse) to vow to love each other “in sickness and in health,” you really want to tip the scales toward the health side for a long, happy life together. Those well-meaning preancées (and preancés, for that matter) aside, it’s the superficiality of the proposal shape quest that can get one’s athleisure in a wad. It dramatizes a lack of perspective on what really matters at a special time of your life. It’s a focus on selfies rather than “us-ies.”

Look, I understand wanting to feel beautiful when someone pops the question. When my husband proposed to me, I’d just had a miscarriage. I was slightly fleshier than I wanted to be, and both my body and heart were raw and vulnerable. But when I see the photo a Roman nun took of us in front of the fountain where we got engaged (no bended knee, just equal footing), all I see are our smiles. My proposal shape was happy and grateful.

Sport24.co.za | Blitzboks stunned by Fijian comeback in Hamilton final
Cape Town – Fiji have beaten the Blitzboks in the Hamilton Sevens final, launching a stunning second half fightback to win 24-17.
Fiji were on the back foot early in the first half with Josua Vakurunabili sent to the sin-bin in the 1st minute after a deliberate knock-down.
The Blitzboks made their extra man count in the 3rd minute, working space on the left to send Kwagga Smith over in the left-hand corner for an unconverted try and a 5-0 lead.
Fiji hit back straight from the kick-off with brilliant long range effort that saw Alosio Naduva get over near the posts for a unconverted try to tie the scores up at 5-5 in the 4th minute.
And the action continued at breakneck speed with Blitzboks captain, Kyle Brown next to score in the right-hand corner.
The try again was unconverted but the Blitzboks led 10-5.
Poor tackling by Fiji saw the Blitzboks score as the hooter sounded for half-time with veteran Branco du Preez getting over near the uprights.
Afrika converted to give the Blitzboks a healthy 17-5 lead at the break.
Fiji need to score first in the second half and they did after a brilliant overhead pass saw Naduva score his second try of the final.
Amenoni Nasilasila converted to cut South Africa’s lead to just five points.
South Africa were then down a man as Du Preez was sent to the bin tackling a Fijian player without the ball.
Naduva sealed his hat-trick after some excellent defence after Werner Kok broke out from the Blitzbok line. Fiji managed to turn the ball over and made their extra man count as Fiji hit the lead 19-17 with two minutes to play.
Fiji put the game beyond the Blitzboks with their fourth try from Eroni Sau to lead 24-17 with a few seconds to play.

eNCA | Too many public officials being arrested: Hawks head
PRETORIA – Acting national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Lt-Gen Yolisa Matakata has expressed concern about the alarming rate at which public officials are continually being found to be in conflict with the law.
From November 1, 2017 to date, about 92 officials from different government entities across all the provinces had been arrested by the Hawks’ serious corruption crime units for various offences, including corruption, armed robbery, and theft, she said in a statement.
“The breakdown of the perpetrators comprises, among others, 28 police officers, 45 traffic officers, six home affairs and other government officials, including municipalities. A staggering 34 traffic officers out of 45 are from Limpopo alone.”
Those who were entrusted with running government affairs were supposed to do so with honour and integrity. They were supposed to be beyond reproach to ensure that public confidence in sectors of government was maintained.
“Disturbingly, Limpopo province has seen a large number of officials being arrested. Most recently 34 traffic officials and 10 police officials were arrested for corrupt activities, followed closely by Gauteng.”
Matakata said the Hawks’ mandate was to return the trust of citizens in government institutions and to provide accountability. The enhanced reforms that the Hawks had undertaken should be deepened and concluded, based on best practices, to enable the continuing rigorous efforts of building and entrenching the rule of law.
“Our justice system is based on the rule of law, which is, in fact, enshrined in our Constitution. It means that the law applies to everyone – no one is above the law. And the law must be applied the same regardless of status or any other consideration.
“Our country has long suffered from a perception that it is a highly corrupt country. We cannot allow corruption to eat at the very foundation of this country and we cannot turn a blind eye to it,” she said.
“The integrity and reputation within our government system must never be undermined and must remain a competitive edge and a source of pride for our citizenry. The war on corruption cannot be left to government alone. The task of civil society and the press is vital in highlighting corruption, reshaping attitudes, and reversing public apathy toward corruption.
“Corruption is a scourge that can never be tolerated. I thank those who report corruption; they help us in our quest to ensure clean governance and to root out dishonesty in the public service.
“I hold decisively to the view that the Hawks must be fearless in confronting corruption. With these arrests we are under no illusions that we have permanently and completely solved the problem.
“We want to warn those who think they can beat the system and continue to be tempted to transgress, we will make sure they are caught and severely dealt with through our competent justice system,” Matakata said.

eNCA | Classy Blitzboks hammer Aussies to reach Hamilton Sevens final
CAPE TOWN – Despite injuries to several first-choice including inspirational captain Philip Snyman, South Africa’s Blitzboks moved down their opposition like true champions to reach the Hamilton Sevens final.
Their Sunday assignments started off with a quarterfinal clash against Scotland and it was one-way traffic from start to finish as the Blitzboks ran out 22-0 winners after tries from Justin Gedult, Seabelo Senatla and Cecil Afrika.
Next up was semifinal opponents Australia who scored an emphatic win over the Blitzboks in last week’s Sydney final.
The Blitzbok defeated @Aussie7s 24-5 in the Cup semi of the @NZ_Sevens in Hamilton to set up a clash in the final with @Fiji7sTeam . A second conscutive final for the Blitzboks and their third from four tournaments in the 2017/2018 @WorldRugby7s .
— Springbok Sevens (@Blitzboks) February 4, 2018
Any doubts of Australia repeating their heroics were dispelled in the opening minute when Afrika scored far out and four minutes later Senatla followed suit. Both tries were unconverted as the Blitzboks ran up a 10-0 lead.
The Blitzboks suffered a setback just before halftime as Senatla was yellow-carded and Australia took advantage of the situation and managed a Tim Anstee try (unconverted) moments ahead of the hooter (10-5).
As it turned out that was Australia’s final score in the match even though they started the second half with a one-man advantage.
The Blitzboks’ defence was outstanding and once they weathered the storm tries by Afrika and Kwagga Smith followed. Branco du Preez was spot on with the conversions and 10-5 became 24-5, thanks to the answered 14-point surge.
The Blitzboks will meet Fiji in the final later on Sunday.
