Cape Town – A police officer was murdered along a Cape Town highway, early on Tuesday morning, while escorting a truck containing perlemoen.
It is understood that the warrant officer, a member of the Hermanus police, was shot dead shortly after 01:00, and that a vehicle with blue lights was involved in the attack.
Western Cape Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said cases of murder, attempted murder and hijacking were under investigation.
No arrests have been made.
News24 understands that the officer had been in a vehicle which was escorting the truck to Cape Town International Airport.
He was targeted along the N2, between Baden Powell Drive and Spine Road.
News24 understands the officer was off duty at the time.
His official firearm was found at the scene.
Cape Town – The All Blacks have welcomed SA Rugby’s decision to host next year’s Rugby Championship match against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld.
WATCH: The worst tacking ever seen on a rugby field?
SA Rugby on Monday announced South Africa’s home venues for the 2018 Rugby Championship, with the All Blacks set to return to Pretoria for the first time in more than a decade when they play in Pretoria on October 6.
The Springboks’ other home matches are in Durban against Argentina (August 18) and in Port Elizabeth against Australia (September 29).
The All Blacks though, are unperturbed about playing the Test at Loftus.
Upon announcing the news on their official website, the Kiwis were quick to point to their excellent record in matches at the ground.
Since 1996, the All Blacks have won all four of the Tests played at Loftus, while their only loss at the ground came some 47 years ago in 1970.
They also shrugged off the notion of the venue being intimidating.
A post on the All Blacks.com website reads: “The ground used to be daunting for New Zealand sides, mainly when playing Northern Transvaal sides as they were in the pre-professional days or the Bulls in Super Rugby.
“It was daunting not only because of the configuration of the ground with its high stands rising steeply almost from the sideline, but also the altitude.
“But recent issues for the Bulls have seen that reputation wane while the Test statistics show New Zealand has a healthy record at the ground.”
In 1996, New Zealand won 33-26 at Loftus Versfeld – a game which saw them secure their first Test series win on South African shores.
It was also the last time the two nations had contested a series of three or four Tests. In 1999, the All Blacks won 34-18 in the Tri-Nations (as the Rugby Championship was then called), while in 2003 they inflicted what was then their biggest ever win over the Boks with a 52-16 scoreline.
The last time the two nations met at Loftus was in 2006 when the visitors also won handsomely by 45-26.
The All Blacks also indicated that they had no qualms by playing against the Boks on the highveld.
“Ellis Park, the traditional South African fortress, became the preferred venue of choice between the two countries but New Zealand played in some stunning games to put any bogey associated with the Johannesburg venue behind them also, most notably in the 38-27 win in 2013 and the 27-20 win in 2015. While losing 25-27 in 2014 it was only a late penalty goal that gave South Africa the win.”
JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng provincial government has issued a statement saying it will not tolerate illegal alcohol sales during the upcoming ANC elective conference.
The conference is set to run between 16 and 20 December at Nasrec, Johannesburg, and according to a statement, the Gauteng provincial government “has noted widespread media reports that a number of liquor outlets are preparing to cash in” during this time.

The Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB) will, however, not grant permission to any liquor outlets or alcohol-selling venues intending to extend their trading hours to cater for the ANC Conference this weekend.
“As far as we are concerned scores of delegates, including dignitaries, international guests, and foreign media will flock to Gauteng this week ahead of the ANC’s 54th National Conference. The Conference will bring some economic spin-offs, especially for the hospitality sector. Liquor trading hours will not be extended, even though by law we have the discretion to do so”, says MEC Lebogang Maile.
Maile warned: “Any outlet that will sell liquor illegally during the duration of the Conference will face the wrath of the law. Our Inspectors will be on the look-out working closely with law enforcement agencies, especially the police. We will be conducting impromptu raids to monitor all outlets.”
According to the statement, Maile would like to encourage delegates, especially foreign guests, to take advantage of their stay in the province and to visit the province’s many heritage sites as well as township tourism hot-spots.

Johannesburg – ANC presidential hopeful Mathews Phosa has withdrawn the urgency of a court interdict which sought to stop Mpumalanga branches that nominated “unity” for the ANC’s top six positions from attending the party’s national elective conference on Saturday.
“I am happy to announce parties have managed to find each other,” Advocate Dali Mpofu SC, for the applicant, told Judge Edwin Molahlehi, who was presiding over the matter in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Mpofu said the parties had held a meeting on Monday and had agreed to hold internal discussions.

He did not want to divulge what was discussed during the meeting, but said parties had agreed to “seek each other within the internal structures”.
Molahlehi said parties should refrain from running to lawyers whenever they experienced conflict.
He urged parties to remind themselves of the constitution.
‘Null and void’
“The best way of resolving conflict is through negotiations,” Molahlehi said.
The court gallery was packed to capacity with ANC supporters. Following the adjournment, supporters cheered loudly and shouted “unity, unity!”
The applicants had taken the ANC at Luthuli House, the Mpumalanga ANC and provincial chair David Mabuza to court ahead of the upcoming elective conference, which takes place between December 16 and 20 in Gauteng.

Should the delegates attend, Phosa’s campaign manager Ronnie Malomane and six others wanted them barred from voting for any “specific individual candidates”.
The applicants also wanted the meetings of the branches that nominated “unity” to be declared “null and void, unlawful and unconstitutional”.
Some 233 branches nominated “unity” during their branch meetings, after sources said Mabuza had reportedly instructed branches not to choose any candidate, but to write “unity” on the leadership nomination forms.
The applicants are also demanding that the December 1 Provincial General Council (PGC), that consolidated branch nominations, be “derecognised”.
‘Political master stroke’
Malomane told News24: “The ANC met yesterday (Monday). We have agreed that the matter should be withdrawn and the ANC will form a task team to Mpumalanga. In order to track… all of their complaints, we have agreed that the unity abstract is no longer there. It is not a candidate. It was just a shadow [and] it won’t even affect the delegates.”
He said they had only withdrawn the urgency of the court matter, and that the constitutionality of the matter was still to be heard in court.
The matter might be heard in 2018, he said.

News24 previously reported that during the PGC, Mabuza made several attempts for the party’s electoral commission and independent agency to declare that the province had nominated “unity”. However, this was rejected by officials who recorded the nominations as “abstentions”.
Mabuza’s unity nomination campaign has been widely criticised and is considered a “political master stroke” in influencing who replaces President Jacob Zuma when he steps down as party president.
He has been pushing for an arranged leadership to avoid contestation at the conference, which he said risked further dividing the ANC.
Mpumalanga qualifies to bring 736 delegates to the national conference, making it the province with the second-highest number of delegates.

You’d think that by a certain age, you’d have mastered taking care of your skin and boast a glowing, flawless skin. And indeed, many people have a great skin until their their late 30s, 40s or even 50s.
So, how is it possible that, having skipped acne during your teens and 20s, you’re now suffering?
Alternatively, you may be asking why your acne has returned, after you thought you’d won the battle in your late teens.
According to a previous Health24 article, 85% of adolescents develop mild acne (zits), while 15% develop clinical acne ranging from mild to severe.
University of Cape Town professor and doctor of dermatology, Rannakoe Lehloenya told Health24 that there are many factors that can cause people’s skins to flare up later in life.
Endogenous factors
Acne may be endogenous (caused by internal factors), or it could be exogenous (external factors).
“For some people it is endogenous. Some may be suffering from late onset acne and for others it could be persistent. Persistent acne is more affected by hormones, especially when polycystic ovarian syndrome is involved. Unfortunately, adult acne tends to be more common in women than men.
“In some instances, genetic predisposition plays a significant role. Children of parents whose acne persists into adulthood unfortunately tend to suffer the same fate,” says Lehloenya.
If one eliminates endogenous factors as the cause of adult acne, exogenous factors may be the problem.
Exogenous factors
Lehloenya says that occlusive and comedogenic cosmetic products are one of the causes of exogenous acne. When used on the skin, occlusive cosmetic products, such as petroleum jelly and certain other oils, leave a film which prevents moisture loss from the skin. Comedogenic cosmetics tend to block up the skin’s pores which may result in comedones, better known as blackheads.
“Besides cosmetics, certain medication, such as antiepileptics and antipsychotics cause acne. Steroids are a common cause – whether taken orally or produced by the body in excess.”
Acne! Why now?
Brenda Maye*, a former teacher from Cape Town, recalls how she developed adult acne just before she turned 40. She had become a mom for the third time and because her daughter was already three years old, she knew it couldn’t have anything to do with her hormones.
“While my acne was the least of my dermatological woes, I still found myself asking why and why now, as I didn’t suffer as a teenager or even in my 20s.
“I started my search for a solution. After trying a few products that were quite expensive, a friend finally introduced me to a product with a chemical composition that agrees with my skin.
“I have never looked back. I do still get the odd zit, here and there, but when that happens I know it’s because I haven’t been cleansing my skin properly.
“I also think that making minor changes in my diet made quite a difference – I eliminated as much processed food from my diet as possible,” said Maye.
Standard treatment
Lehloenya says that there is unfortunately no quick fix for a skin affected by acne.
“The best treatment approach is to identify the underlying causes – endogenous, exogenous or both – and find ways of managing them.
“Once you’ve identified the underlying cause, you can address the problem – the condition is not refractory, or stubborn.
“Acne treatment similar to other age groups is the best way forward once you have identified and started managing the underlying drivers,” said Lehloenya.
