News24.com | Thieves ditch shipping container with chicken product worth R400 000
Durban – A stolen trailer carrying a 12-metre shipping container with 24 tonnes of chicken, valued at about R400 000, has been recovered in Verulam, north of Durban, police and private security said.
Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the trailer and container packed with chicken was spotted on the side of the road near Osindisweni Hospital in Verulam at about 06:00 on Tuesday.
“Police were alerted and the initial investigation revealed that they were stolen from Umbilo (Durban). The trailer and the container were handed back to their lawful owner,” she said.
No arrest has been made at this stage and police investigations are continuing.
Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), said it was established that the stolen goods were valued at approximately R400 000.
“It is alleged that the contents of the shipping container were imported from Brazil… The contents of the container are generally used to manufacture processed chicken products such as polony, sausages and burgers,” he said.
He said it was believed that the suspects had stolen the wrong trailer as they had intended on stealing one containing dressed poultry.

eNCA | WATCH: ANC MP probes DA Chief Whip’s dirty bedroom sheets
CAPE TOWN – State capture has been cast into the limelight as the MP’s debate the ongoing issues that have dogged President Jacob Zuma, who is the central figure in the allegations.
During the debate an ANC MP (who is not named or seen in the video) hurled a personal attack on DA’s Chief Whip John Steenhuisen.
The ANC MP asks if Steenhuisen is equipped to answer a question on how he departed the KZN legislature.
Steenhuisen replies by saying that he simply got promoted and that is why he left eThekweni. He adds that the matter is private and that people who are “interested in what’s going on in other peoples bedrooms have very little going on in their own.”
ANC MP, Lusizo Makhubela-Mashele points out that, “Our primary role as MPs in the national assembly is to ensure that proper accountability and governance of all state organs occur.”
The debate was requested by the DA to give a chance to the MP’s to address the issue of state capture in the National Assembly.
This debate is seen as a parliamentary duty to hold President Zuma and other executives accountable for violating the Ethics Code by not inspecting Gupta links and ignoring the recommendations made by former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

News24.com | R22.5m for VVIP flights: Defence dept overspends budget
Cape Town – The Department of Defence has overspent on VVIP flights by R22.5m since 2015, a parliamentary reply has revealed.
DA defence and military veterans spokesperson Kobus Marais submitted questions to Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, asking how much she had budgeted for VIP flights in the last three financial years.
Marais also asked how much of that budget had been spent.
In addition, the DA wanted to know how many VIP flights the department had taken since April 1, 2017, and the cost of each flight.
In her reply, Mapisa-Nqakula used the term “VVIP charter flights”.
She revealed that the department overshot its R26.8m budget and spent more than R61m in the 2016/17 financial year.
Money wasted on ‘luxuries for the political elite’
The department underspent its budget for the 2015/16 financial year, while it was still within its budget for VVIP charter flights for the 2017/18 financial year with there having been 10 flights for very, very, important people.
The most expensive flight cost the department more than R6.6m, followed by a R4.6m flight.
It is not clear who was flying and where they were headed.
The reply showed that the department had overspent by R22.5m over three financial years.
The DA said it would ask further parliamentary questions to determine exactly which VVIPs were transported, whether or not they were on official business and who accompanied them.
“This is what happens when President Jacob Zuma refuses to fly on the perfectly functional presidential jet, Inkwazi.”
Marais said the government could have used the money to build toilets and RDP homes for poor communities.
“The DA will not sit idly while the ANC continues to waste money on luxuries for the political elite at the expense of millions of South Africans who are forced to survive without the most basic of services,” he said.
Sport24.co.za | Bok replacements need to up workrate
Cardiff – While the Welsh test this Saturday may be seen more as a reality check than a season-defining fixture, the questions surrounding the Springboks focus more on their own game plan than anything that the home side may serve up at the Principality stadium.
READ: Coetzee – Boks are moving in the right direction
The Boks have lost their four “foreign legion” players – and none more crucial than the duo of Duane Vermeulen and Francois Louw this week, both returning to their respective European clubs as the test falls outside the set test window.
Both players lent the Springboks stability and workrate, often doing more off the ball than in the limelight as they steadied the ship after the Albany and Dublin disasters in this year’s Springbok season.
Still, both players need to be replaced and while the replacements may well be easier to pick than many think at this stage of the season, the responsibility on those players remains massive in light of the workrate of both players both on and off the ball during the matches.
Take the Italian game – a match where the Boks dominated physically against a poor Italian side that offered little in terms of attack. The Boks returned to their strengths by playing most of the game without the ball and ensuring the defensive line wasn’t breached. To think that the scoreline favoured them so heavily when they had 40 percent possession and 37 percent territory in the game shows the resoluteness of the Springbok forwards in atrocious conditions in Padova.
The tackle count naturally was also higher and Louw contributed no less than 22 tackles, matched only by hard-working duo of lock Lood de Jager and flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit, who both managed 22 tackles on their own. Vermeulen wasn’t far behind with 14 tackles while he also took the ball up 11 times for a net gain of 28 metres.
Both were instrumental in marshalling the defence and did the donkeywork, the unseen work that often goes on off the ball and both will be missed.
While Siya Kolisi has a high work-rate, the question on who will fill the No 8 jersey will be an interesting one. Dan du Preez has deputised from the bench for the past two test matches, and is seen as a potential star of the future while both Cheetahs players Uzair Cassiem and Oupa Mohoje could also come into reckoning for the position.
Either way, Vermeulen’s physicality will be missed, and the Boks should look to replace like for like when they make that decision.
Still, with Tendai Mtawarira missing out on the test, Steven Kitshoff has shown himself already to be an excellent replacement – not only through some strong scrummaging but also in making a massive 16 tackles – coming off the bench as a reserve. Along with Malcolm Marx returning it should give the Boks back some of the physicality they lose with Vermeulen and Louw gone.
Out back, the two standout backs – Handre Pollard and Francois Venter put in 27 tackles between them, more than the rest of the backline combined and showed just how strong they worked together against the Italians.
Wales will be a lot tougher though – and their stats underline that – having had 63 percent possession and 67 percent territory against the All Blacks and dominating all the stats except the scoreboard.
They have a 97 percent success rate at the rucks against the All Blacks and their star flanker Josh Navidi had 14 runs for 45 metres and is a key man in their line-up.
Since the Ireland defeat there has been a sense that the rest of the tour has been more about survival than taking a step forward. Cardiff will be a difficult test that will provide the team with some stern challenges at the breakdown – and losing two of the most senior leaders in the pack hasn’t helped.
It will take a huge effort from the rest to ensure that the workrate doesn’t dip and that the Welsh don’t have the same possession and territory stats as they did against the All Blacks.

Health24.com | Etiquette mistakes we make at gym
Working out at your local gym has many benefits: You have a great variety of classes and equipment at your disposal.
But chances are there are things that annoy you and others gym users. You yourself could even be guilty of breaking some of these gym rules:
1. Not putting away the equipment
Ask anyone who regularly works out in the free-weight section what their biggest annoyance is and it would undoubtedly be weights that aren’t put back where they belong.
Don’t be the person who leaves a set of dumbbells on the floor. If you used them, put them back where you found them. The same applies to Swiss balls, yoga mats and steps.
2. Not wiping the equipment
We’ve all spotted the person who sweats buckets on the spinning bike and nonchalantly walks away without even wiping off the seat.
Don’t be that person. Always wipe down your equipment, including treadmill handles and weights.
3. Hogging the equipment
We can see you! You’re occupying the last open bench, but instead of working out, you’re checking your phone for messages.
4. Being stuck to your phone
When using your phone, please keep the people around you in mind. You could be distracting or annoying them. A lot of us use our phones for fitness apps or music, but if you have your phone with you, be mindful of how you use it. Don’t have long or loud conversations! Sending a text message or checking your phone during an exercise class is extremely disrespectful towards the instructor. Also, walking around in the gym, head down, makes it easier for you to bump into people.
5. Overdoing the perfume
Don’t go to town with the perfume or deodorant at the gym, especially in an enclosed area like your spinning class. People might find it overpowering. And you’re going to sweat anyway, so why waste that expensive perfume.
6. Making small talk
There’s nothing wrong with a polite smile and a chat. But if you give unsolicited advice to strangers and interrupt people’s workout, you’re being annoying. The only time to speak up and interfere is when you see someone about to injure themselves.
7. Coming to the gym when you’re ill
Don’t be a hero! Not only do you risk getting sicker, but gyms are breeding grounds for bacteria and you can easily spread your germs around, contaminating those around you.
8. Train in front of the equipment racks
Space might be limited, but don’t make things worse by blocking off access to the weight rack or yoga mats. Be considerate and move to another spot.
