Health24.com | Woman has 1kg hair ball removed from stomach
After complaining about severe abdominal pain and constant vomiting, an Indian woman had an enormous ball of hair removed from her gut.
The 20-year-old suffers from a condition known as Rapunzel syndrome, also known as trichophagia, where one is compelled to eat one’s own hair.
Emotional or psychiatric conditions
The condition is often associated with another condition – trichotillomania – where people feel compelled to pull their own hair out.
The hairball that doctors removed from the Indian woman’s abdomen weighed just under 1kg.
The procedure was done at the General Hospital in Rajawadi, a suburb of Mumbai, India. The Daily Mail reported that the mass of hair had a “tail”, because the larger mass stays in the stomach while the rest tapers off into the small intestine.
Trichstop reports that trichophagia involves eating pulled out hair, or simply eating the ends of one’s hair. The condition is said to be triggered by several emotional or psychiatric conditions, such as depression, stress or abuse.
Another 25-year-old woman had started complaining about severe abdominal and stomach pain a few days after giving birth. The Daily Mail reported that doctors initially thought her pain was caused by complications with her uterus or placenta as a result of giving birth, they found a hairball weighing 1.5kg in her stomach.
WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT
A review from the US National Library of Medicine states a hairball is medically classified as a “bezoar”, which means an indigestible mass. It is most commonly found in the stomach, but it can be found in the gastrointestinal tract as well.
Accumulated fibres
The hairball continues to grow as more indigestible foods or fibres are accumulated, and hair isn’t the only fibre which can form an indigestible mass in the gut.
Phytobezoars consist of indigestible fruit or vegetable fibres and lactobezoars consist of indigestible milk curd.
In order to treat the condition, one needs to find the underlying condition or the reason behind eating and pulling out one’s hair.
Burst ulcer
A couple months ago, a UK teen died from peritonitis – inflammation of the thin tissue in the abdomen and most of the organs.
Lincolnshire Live reported that according to Jasmine Beever’s post mortem she had a hairball in her stomach, which became infected and caused an ulcer. The ulcer subsequently burst, which caused her organs to shut down.
Beever was at college when she collapsed, and after going home to rest in bed, she woke up to find her skin blotchy. After losing consciousness she was taken to hospital by ambulance. Hospital staff tried to resuscitate her, bit only briefly succeeded – 15 minutes later she passed away.

Sport24.co.za | Duane: There’s hope for Boks ahead of 2019 RWC
Cape Town – Springbok No 8 Duane Vermeulen says there is hope for the Springboks to achieve success at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.
Vermeulen played at No 8 in South Africa’s last two outings which included wins against France in Paris (18-17) and Italy in Padova (35-6).
He has returned to his French club Toulon so will miss Saturday’s Test against Wales in Cardiff – which falls outside World Rugby’s Test window – but has enjoyed his stint with the Boks.
The Springboks have endured a torrid two years – winning just 11 of 24 Tests – a 46% win record that is likely to see coach Allister Coetzee lose his job.
Last week, former national coach Jake White indicated that the Boks did not have enough time to rebuild ahead of the next World Cup, but Vermeulen disagrees.
“I know the guys are under pressure in South Africa. The public is seldom happy, but the team must keep focus with its end-goal in mind. It may have been an ugly couple of years, but we know what we want to achieve come the World Cup,” Vermeulen was quoted as saying by Netwerk24.
Vermeulen’s team-mate in the loose trio, Francois Louw – who plays for Bath in England – is also unavailable for Saturday’s Test in Cardiff.
Vermeulen though hopes they added enough value to the Bok cause.
“You can’t significantly influence the team in two weeks, but then again I hope myself and Flo left a little bit for the guys to think about and to work on. We could share the experiences with them,” Vermeulen said.
Lock Franco Mostert, who plays for the Ricoh Black Rams in Japan, is also unavailable this weekend.
The loss of the trio, in particular loose forwards Louw and Vermeulen, has in part been offset by the return from paternity duty of Siya Kolisi.
Meanwhile, the Boks will also be sweating on the availability of Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira who was forced to leave the field against Italy with a groin injury.
Sharks front-rower Thomas du Toit has been called up as cover ahead of the Test against the Welsh at the Principality Stadium.
Kick-off is at 16:30 (SA time) on Saturday.
News24.com | SA’s new top cop vows to serve with honour, courage
Pretoria – Newly appointed national police commissioner General Khehla Sitole has vowed to serve the country with honour and courage.
On Monday morning, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula presided over the ceremony to bestow the sword of command on Sitole.
When Mbalula presented Sitole with the sword as a sign of his new power and authority – those in attendance cheered and ululated.
“General Sitole, it is your responsibility as the national police commissioner to ensure the safety of the citizens and inhabitants of this republic…” Mbalula said.
However, speaking to reporters shortly after the ceremony, Sitole said he was one step ahead with his duties.
He said his mandate was to ensure that economic growth was allowed to take place undisturbed.
“I have a strong belief that, if there was economic stability, there would be no need for our communities to commit crime. Economic stability leads to social stability,” he said.
Sitole added that he wanted to make things easier for himself, and had put plans into action to fight crime.
“I don’t want to spend much time and resources hunting criminals that I may already know where they are,” he said.
Sitole also said he would be beefing up policing in areas where crimes took place.
Meanwhile, Mbalula said he was only expecting “simple” things from the newly appointed commissioner – including fighting corruption “without fear or favour”.
“Our people are not asking much from him – they ask for honour,” he said.
He said the power bestowed on Sitole was not “unfettered” by the democratic order and values.
On Thursday last week, after he was introduced as the new top cop, Sitole said he would not bow to political pressure or interference, adding that it was his duty to protect the integrity of the police.
Sitole outlined his vision for SAPS and made it clear that there would be no political interference as he executed his vision.
“Firstly, let me start by saying, it is my responsibility to orientate the minister on all operational policies that govern the police,” Sitole said at the time.
Sitole, as part of his vision for policing, includes a clampdown on gangsterism, reclaiming crime-infested areas that are a no-go zone for police, a dismantling of organised crime structures, as well as equipping police with resources and training to avoid cop killings.
eNCA | ANC accuses MEC of sabotage over failed 16 days event
JOHANNESBURG – The ANC in the Eastern Cape has accused Social Development MEC, Nancy Sihlwayi of sabotage.
It follows the weekend’s failed launch of 16 days of activism against women and child abuse in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Sihlwayi changed the venue of the event, leaving it unattended.
The ANC says the change was against the party’s wishes and served a personal factional agenda.
They’re demanding she explains herself and the abuse of state resources.
President Jacob Zuma also didn’t pitch at the event amid the chaos.
