Health24.com | ‘Stroke is everybody’s issue’ – a survivor’s story
World Stroke Day is celebrated to raise awareness of an often fatal experience. Strokes can, however, be avoided.
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, 10 people in South Africa have a stroke every hour. In addition, one in three South Africans suffers from high blood pressure, which is a major risk for stroke.
Suzan’s story
A stroke can literally be described as a “brain attack”, where the blood flow to the brain is temporarily cut off or limited. This causes a lack of vital oxygen and nutrients to the brain, causing cells to die within minutes.
Although not all strokes result in death, they can change lives forever. In 2010, Suzan Raphuti-Letsoalo from Atteridgeville, Pretoria, suffered a haemorrhagic stroke following the birth of her youngest child.
She spent close to a month in a coma. When she woke up, she was unable to walk, use her arms or speak. The former social worker and mother of three suddenly had to face drastic changes in her life.
As if taking care of a newborn baby wasn’t challenging enough, she also had to relearn to walk and talk during that time. She underwent intense rehabilitation – and to the great surprise of her doctors she recovered. The fact that she regained her speech and movement was a pure miracle.
Suzan was unable to return to work after her ordeal, but made use of the few resources she had to create a support system for other stroke survivors in her area.
“To me, after this ordeal, stroke is everybody’s issue right now,” says Suzan. “It’s not only an issue for stroke survivors and their families – a stroke can attack everybody and it knows no age.”
Know your numbers
Suzan’s support group is called Stroke Tamara, and aims to teach people about the dangers of a stroke and the importance of acting quickly in an emergency. In the lead-up to World Stroke Day, Stroke Tamara partnered with Angels Initiative to create and raise awareness of stroke at the Bara taxi rank in Johannesburg.
Here, people are receiving information about strokes – they can also get tested for high blood pressure, which is one of the main risk factors for stroke.
“Know your numbers – your blood pressure, your glucose levels,” says Dr Shanil Naidoo from the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim. He says if you know that you have high blood pressure for example, you will know that you are at high risk of having a stroke and can do something about it.
Prof Feroza Motara, Head of Emergency Medicine at the University of Witwatersrand, states that the Angels Initiative was adopted to raise awareness of stroke, not only for World Stroke Day, but to improve treatment, facilities and the capability of handling acute strokes in general.
“Ordinary citizens are essentially the ‘first responders’ when a stroke occurs. If they are able to act with certainty and speed to secure emergency treatment, we can save many lives and reduce the severity of long-term damage,” she said.
Lower your risk
You can lower your risk for a stroke by taking the following measures:
- Follow a balanced lifestyle: eat healthy and exercise regularly.
- Get your blood pressure and blood sugar tested regularly.
- Cut out salt.
- Consume alcohol sparingly and quit smoking.

eNCA | Lawyer arrested in Tanzania for homosexuality grateful for the support
JOHANNESBURG – A South African human rights lawyer released from detention in Tanzania has sent a message to those who supported her.
Sibongile Ndashe was arrested with 12 other human rights activists last week, for allegedly promoting homosexuality in the country.
Homosexuality is illegal in Tanzania.
“Thank you so much for all those messages of support, the emails, profile pictures. Most of the time we’re really looked down upon. It’s just sending one email and signing a petition and doing all sort of things. I believe that in this instance it made a world difference sending all those letters to the attorney general in the various Tanzania embassies,” said Sibongile Ndashe, Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa.

News24.com | SANDF soldier kills co-worker, attempts suicide
Johannesburg – A South African Defence Force Member shot and killed a female officer before turning his firearm on himself while stationed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Defence Ministry’s spokesperson, Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi, confirmed the incident on Saturday.
“We can confirm that [on Friday] at about 20:45 South African time one of our soldiers shot and killed another soldier, who is believed to have been his girlfriend,” he said.
Mgobozi said the soldier had then turned his weapon on himself and tried to commit suicide.
Mgobozi said the woman had died on arrival at hospital, while the man had survived but was currently in a critical condition.
He said the motive for the shooting was not known but an investigation was being conducted.
“We are still trying to get more information on the incident,” he said.

eNCA | ‘How come you can say tsunami but not Tshepo?’: ask white people
JOHANNESBURG – Why do all white people seem to get hyped up for the song “Sweet Caroline”? Where do white people find the extra “a” and get “Mapumalanga”? And, do all white people have avocados in their homes?
These are just some of the tongue-in-cheek questions black people have posed to white people, in response to a post on the Facebook page “Joburger”.
The post reads: “Okay black people… ask white people one question you always wanted to know.”
The post has received over 12,000 hilarious comments, with both black and white people laughing at the ingenuity.

Sport24.co.za | Currie Cup final ‘not a normal game’
Durban – Saturday’s Currie Cup final between the Sharks and Western Province at Kings Park is no ordinary game.
That is the view of WP captain Chris van Zyl, who says that significant time was spent this week preparing the players, particularly the young ones, for the mental test that comes with playing in a Cup final.
Both sides are fielding a number of youngsters who will be playing in their first major final, and Van Zyl reckons that preparing them for Saturday has been important.
“It’s definitely nice to draw on the experience of guys who have been there before,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s paramount, but it helps for them to give guidance to some of the younger players and offer some insight.
“It’s definitely not a normal game. We’ve done a couple of things this week to ensure that the guys are very aware that it isn’t a normal game and they must be ready for something special.”
But while the pressure will be turned up come 16:00, Van Zyl has also urged his players to make the most of the occasion.
“It’s important to enjoy it. It is a final and it is away, but it’s an experience that a lot of people would give their right arm for and we said that at the beginning of the week,” he said.
“You must make sure that you enjoy the experience, first and foremost, because it doesn’t come around often.”
Province will be buoyed by the fact that, two weekends ago, they beat the Sharks in Durban in the final round of group fixtures.
Saturday’s final will be a different matter entirely, but the belief is clearly there from a WP perspective.
“We are not going there to take part in a final. We truly believe we can do this and we’re hungry and want to go bring back the cup,” Van Zyl said.
