Port Elizabeth – A mother and daughter have been found following an appeal put out by police earlier on Monday after both were reported missing by the woman’s parents on Friday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said Karla Hazel, 31, and her daughter, Kayla, 8, had left the woman’s parent’s home in Dorothy Street in Ferguson, in Port Elizabeth, on Thursday last week and went to visit her sister in Sherwood at about 20:15 that same evening.
“She then left her sister’s house and went across the street with her daughter to Jade’s Sports Bar,” she said.
According to the bar’s manager, she used the toilet, had a drink and phoned or received a call from someone by the name of Mike about fetching her.
Naidu said the mother and daughter left the bar at about 22:20 and had not been heard from since.
Naidu said Hazel had returned to her parent’s home to collect her clothes on Monday evening, but the police had been present to question her.
“Police determined that she had left Kayla with friends in Salt Lake City, in PE,” she said.
Naidu said police then fetched Kayla and left her in the care of her grandparents for the evening.
Monday was Kayla’s eighth birthday.
“The family will report to Kabega Park police station tomorrow for further referrals and assistance,” she said.

Cape Town – Proteas captain Faf du Plessis was impressed with the way Duanne Olivier bowled in the second innings of the second Test against Bangladesh in Bloemfontein.
Olivier, playing in only his fifth Test, bowled 10 overs unchanged at the start of the day on Sunday and troubled the tourists’ batsmen with his hostile pace and bounce.
Olivier’s spell set the tone for the Proteas as they ran through the Tigers’ batting order to dismiss them for 172 and wrap up an innings and 254-run win inside three days.
Although he only had one wicket to show for his efforts – with Kagiso Rabada taking 10 in the match – Du Plessis hailed the Bloemfontein local.
“You want to see improvement from young bowlers and you want to see that they can learn at the highest level,” said Du Plessis.
“The way he (Olivier) bowled today (on Sunday) was a fantastic bowling effort and I said that if you bowl 10 overs on the trot of short ball work, it takes an incredible effort.
“So I have take my hat off to him, he was our best bowler for the day. Obviously KG’s (Rabada) skill you can’t compare to any of our bowlers.”
The 25-year-old Olivier, who has taken 17 wickets in his five Tests, was selected as replacement for the injured Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn.
“What we needed from a bowling attack, we wanted to be ruthless, aggressive and make it uncomfortable for Bangladesh and he (Olivier) led us in that aspect. I’m very proud to see that he can make those improvements,” added Du Plessis.
Du Plessis said it was important for the Proteas to create depth in the seam bowling department and that the younger players have the quality to step up when they are needed.
“These guys that played the last two Test matches will be looked at for the future so it’s important for them to see that there is some work to do, but they have the quality,” said Du Plessis.
JOHANNESBURG – The death toll in the Life Esidimeni tragedy now stands at 118.
This came to light on the first day of the three-week arbitration hearings.
Arbitration was recommended by the health ombudsman in his report into the death of psychiatric patients last year.
Over 60 families represented in this process want to know exactly how their loved ones died.
According to lawyers representing rights group Section 27, hundreds of psychiatric patients from Life Esidimeni Centres in Gauteng were loaded onto bakkies and trucks like cattle on June 30, 2016, and dropped off at unlicensed NGOs around Gauteng.
This removal and relocation of patients ended in tragedy – and the death toll is still rising.
Section 27 said it has the names of 11 more patients who died, not included in the latest tally of 118.

“Could it be possible that we have 129 dead!?” a shocked head of the arbitration process, justice Dikgang Moseneke, asked on Monday.
Many of the deceased died from starvation and negligence. Health Ombudsman Malekgapuru Makgoba, who is one of five state witnesses, described how one patient had lost so much weight, his pants had to be tied with shoelaces.
Makgoba said many families are still looking for their missing relatives.
But, families also want former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu, the person who authorised the transfers, to be subpoenaed.
Some families will also testify over the three-week process.
At the end of the hearings, Judge Moseneke will help determine a way forward, either by way of redress and/or compensation.
