The macroeconomic modelling and forecasting process at the South African Reserve Bank makes use of a suite of models. This paper provides an update of the Quarterly Projection Model (QPM) – a so-called gap model – which has played an integral role in the suite since 2007. Details of the structure and functioning of the QPM model, with particular focus on the four most important gaps – the output gap, real exchange rate gap, real interest rate gap, and inflation gap (or inflation from target) – are provided. The model is then used to decompose these four gaps in order to tell a coherent story of South Africa’s macroeconomic dynamics since the inception of inflation targeting. From the perspective of the policy maker, the QPM provides a tool that quantifies the consequences of its actions on the economy, while adequately highlighting the trade-offs that are faced in the process.

Job description:
As a performance analyst, you are mainly responsible for firm-wide oversight of performance calculations, contribution and attribution analysis, composite review, and GIPS compliance. This role involves working closely with external service providers and internal departments including portfolio management, product development, finance as well as other groups within investment administration to provide analysis and guidance on performance related inquiries and business issues.
Job responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Compiling, maintaining and distributing various recurring and ad-hoc performance reports
Ensure portfolio performance integrity by use and oversight of proprietary performance reporting, attribution, and contribution tools; review and analyse performance results and communicate findings
Collaborate on performance attribution methodologies and results
Liaise with investment administration on various operational challenges that impact performance and the investment process including pricing, derivatives processing, corporate actions, asset transfers, and cash flows
Collaborate with IT (internal and external) to develop, test, and integrate technology solutions to enhance our performance reporting and analysis tools (automation)
Engage with portfolio and product management to develop performance solutions
Provide support to product management
Assist in the design and implementation of policies, procedures and reporting to effectively identify and resolve operational issues while ensuring best practice and consistency across products
Ad-hoc project work
Requirements
Core competencies:
You have a good understanding of investments
You have a practical understanding of different performance calculation and attribution methodologies
You have an understanding and knowledge of performance standards (GIPS)
VBA programming skills will be a distinct advantage
You have current, relevant experience in accounting / portfolio administration would be a distinct advantage
You have a keen eye for detail
You are highly accurate
You have excellent numeric skills
You have an analytical mind-set
You are a problem solver
You do not mind repetition. Recurring tasks will be part of your role
You are proactive and show initiative
You have excellent communication skills – ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the organization
You have the ability to work unattended and as part of a small team
You are able to learn quickly from an experienced team and have the ability to prioritise work efficiently and take ownership of responsibilities
You have an affinity for systems
You are able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines

Core qualifications and experience requirements:
You have a B.Com accounting (honours) with tax as distinct advantage
You have a minimum five years’ current and relevant experience in the financial services – asset management industry; this would be a distinct advantage
You have strong knowledge of Excel (advanced) and Microsoft Office. Bloomberg, Morningstar and Statpro experience would be distinct advantages
Preferred computer competency:

VBA
SQL
Bloomberg / Statpro / Morningstar would be distinct advantage
