News24.com | Gang crossfire ‘war zone’ as anti-gang Cape grouping resurfaces
Cape Town – About 35 shots were fired in Kensington, Cape Town, on Monday evening as members of People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (Pagad) held an anti-gang motorcade in the area, community police forum chairperson Mogamat Nordien said.
“The situation is very volatile. We don’t know who is shooting, but I gave an instruction that no resident should go onto the roads,” Nordien told News24.
“Kensington has not experienced this type of shooting in many years,” he claimed.
Nordien said he is aware of one house damaged by crossfire, but is not aware of any injuries.
“Residents should stay in their houses for their own safety,” he reiterated.
Sources with close ties to police told News24 that members of Pagad clashed with alleged gangsters, causing the surge in shootings.
Kensington residents took to Facebook to express their concern after hearing multiple gunshots in the area. One said it sounded like a “war zone”.
Western Cape police could not be reached for comment.
On Monday afternoon, on its official Facebook page, Pagad shared a post saying it will be in Kensington.
The post called for an end in all areas of on-going violence, shootings and killings.
“It will only stop if everyone joins together and says enough is enough! Join the motorcade.”
Pagad was formed in the 1990s to combat gangsterism on the Cape Flats.
In 2003, the BBC reported that the once peaceful organisation deviated toward vigilantism.
At the time, several Pagad members were awaiting trial on a range of charges including possessing explosives.
In 1996, the murder of Hard Livings gang leader Rashaad Staggie at the hands of Pagad members made national headlines.
His brother Rashied Staggie survives him.
In 2016 Staggie and three other suspects faced charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as suspected stolen property.
Staggie, serving prison time for another crime, was subsequently released on full parole.
In 2003 he was jailed for 15 years for his role in the kidnapping and rape of a teenage girl.
The following year he was sentenced to 13 years in jail for stealing firearms from a police armoury.
The sentences ran concurrently and Staggie served 11 years in prison.
News24.com | Couple, aged 19, dies after vehicle plunges into dam
Polokwane – A young couple died on Sunday morning when the car they were driving in plunged into the Chuniespoort Dam along the R37 outside Polokwane, Limpopo police said on Monday.
A fisherman on a boat alerted police to the scene when he saw a Toyota Tazz drive into the water at a high speed, Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe’ Ngoepe said in a statement.
Ngoepe said the bodies of Thabang Tladi and Kate Ramoshaba, both aged 19, from Lebowakgomo Township has been retrieved from the vehicle.
The motive behind this incident is unknown but domestic violence is not ruled out, he said.
Ngoepe said when police tried to pull the vehicle out of the dam, a cable snapped which resulted in the vehicle drifting deeper below the water.
“We are now calling in specialised resources to help us,” Ngoepe told News24.
A search for the vehicle will continue on Tuesday.
Sport24.co.za | Coetzee: Combrinck hasn’t had enough game time
Cape Town – Springbok coach Allister Coetzee says that Ruan Combrinck’s exclusion in the squad for home matches against Australia and New Zealand is down to his lack of game time.
Following the 57-0 hammering the Boks suffered against the All Blacks in Albany two weekend ago, there had been loud calls for Combrinck’s inclusion after the struggles of right wing Raymond Rhule in that match.
Instead, Coetzee bulked up his wing stocks by calling up Sharks speedster Sbu Nkosi while Combrinck, who is available for Bok selection, remains with his Japanese club Kintetsu Liners.
Coetzee and the Boks are currently in Bloemfontein preparing for Saturday’s clash against the Wallabies, and it didn’t take long before the under-fire coach was asked about Combrinck’s exclusion as he was facing media at a press briefing on Monday.
“What I’ve looked at since the start of this year is players showing good form, that is the criteria that I used, and at this time after Super Rugby Ruan hasn’t played any rugby for Kintetsu Liners. He has been there for three games and he hasn’t started any of them,” Coetzee was quoted as saying on SuperSport’s website.
“I burnt my fingers last year when we had players coming from France and we spoke about their conditioning and their fitness levels. We are at a crucial stage of our campaign at this point of time.”
Coetzee said that the difference between Combrinck’s situation and that of flyhalf Handre Pollard, who has played minimal rugby for nearly two years, is that Pollard has been in the Springbok set-up throughout his rehabilitation.
Still, Coetzee said that Combrinck was still part of the Springbok plan moving forward.

eNCA | ‘The United States’ has ‘declared war on our country’: North Korea
WASHINGTON – North Korea’s foreign minister said on Monday that President Donald Trump had declared war on North Korea and that Pyongyang reserves the right to take countermeasures, including shooting down US strategic bombers even if they are not in the country’s airspace.
“The whole world should clearly remember it was the US who first declared war on our country,” Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters in New York.
“Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down United States strategic bombers even when they are not inside the airspace border of our country.”
READ: North Korea’s Kim vows to make ‘deranged’ Trump pay
Trump had warned the North Korean leader in his UN address last week Tuesday that the United States, f threatened, would “totally destroy” the country of 26 million people and mocked Kim as a “rocket man” on a suicide mission.
It was the US president’s most direct reference to military action so far against the North, which conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test on September 3.
In addition to the nuclear test, North Korea has launched dozens of missiles since Kim came to power in 2011. Two recent ballistic missiles flew over Japan as Pyongyang advanced toward its goal of creating nuclear warhead-tipped missiles that can hit the United States.

Health24.com | Surgery may trigger opioid abuse in teens and young adults
Opioids are a class of drug that include illegal substances like heroin, as well as prescription pain relievers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine and morphine.
The reason why opioids can be highly addictive is because they cause the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that brings about feelings of pleasure. With repeated exposure, these drugs can however become habit-forming.
Teens and young adults who have surgery may be at increased risk for opioid painkiller abuse, a new study indicates.
Substances believed not to be addictive
Opioids such as oxycodone (OxyContin) and hydrocodone (Vicodin) are commonly prescribed for pain after surgery.
“And until recently, it was generally believed they were not addictive,” said study lead author Dr Calista Harbaugh. She’s a general surgery resident at the University of Michigan Medical School.
“The study is an important step toward recognising that the [US] opioid epidemic is affecting adolescents and young adults in a major way,” Harbaugh said in an American Academy of Pediatrics news release.
Persistent opioid use
For the study, researchers analysed data from nearly 90 000 privately insured US patients aged 13 to 21 (average age 17) who underwent one of 13 common surgeries in this age group. The patients had no history of opioid painkiller prescriptions before their surgery.
The investigators looked for persistent opioid use – defined as continued prescription refills 90 to 180 days after the surgical procedure and beyond what is expected after routine surgery.
The overall rate of persistent post-surgical use was nearly 5%, ranging from less than 3% to more than 15% depending on the type of surgery and other factors, the findings showed.
The rate was 0.1% in a “control group” of teens and young adults who did not have surgery.
Leftover prescriptions
Patients who underwent gallbladder removal and colon surgery had the highest risk of persistent opioid use. Older youth with other chronic conditions, depression, anxiety or prior substance use disorders also had an elevated risk, according to the study.
Recent research has found that many adults become addicted to opioid painkillers after surgery, but this is the first study to suggest this problem also occurs in teens and young adults post-surgery, the researchers said.
“Most adolescents who misuse prescription opioids get the pills from leftover prescriptions of their family, friends, or their own,” Harbaugh explained. “We need to make sure that we treat pain after surgery, but it must be balanced with the risk of providing more opioid than necessary to patients and their communities.
Alternative treatments
Health24 recently mentioned a study where alternative pain treatments were explored. These include:
- Acupuncture
- Electrotherapy (the use of electric energy to stimulate nerves and muscles)
- Cryotherapy (the application of extreme cold to the region of surgery)
- Machine-based rehabilitation (continuous passive motion)
- Pre-surgery exercise regimens
