News24.com | Woman sentenced to 25 years after killing 18-year-old mother and stealing her child
Pietermaritzburg – The Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday sentenced a 22-year-old woman to 25 years imprisonment for strangling an 18-year-old mother to death and presenting the mother’s child as her own, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Samkelisiwe Zandile Shange, 22, was found guilty of murder and kidnapping, spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said in a statement.
Gwala said Shange had suffered a miscarriage and wanted to present the 18-year-old’s baby to her boyfriend as their child.
She was arrested in July 2016 after family members received information that Shange was involved in the 18-year-old’s disappearance in KwaNyuswa, roughly 50km from Port Shepstone.
The accused was taken to the police station, together with the six-month-old baby. She then led the police to the bushes where she had dumped the 18-year-old’s body, Gwala said.
The baby had been taken to a place of safety shortly after the arrest.
Gwala said the young mother was strangled to death by Shange before she took the baby.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Bheki Langa praised the officials involved in ensuring Shange’s sentence.
“Women of Shange’s calibre do not deserve to be within the community because of her inhuman behaviour and the trauma she posed on the baby, leaving her an orphan,” he said in a statement.

News24.com | WATCH: Gangsters shoot at police in Cape Town
Cape Town – Shocking video footage of apparent gangsters turning on and then shooting at police in Hanover Park has emerged in an incident in which a teen was killed and officers injured.
This incident has played out as gang violence seems to be growing in the Western Cape.
Western Cape Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said community members retaliated when an unrelated suspect was arrested during the arrest of a suspect accused of killing an 18-year-old in Erie Court, Hanover Park, on Tuesday morning.
Footage shows officers running away as men approach them.
Traut said one officer was bitten and another hit with a stone during the altercation. Both officers have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
The motive behind the community’s retaliation is unknown.
Gang violence has recently surged in various areas around Cape Town. Several children have been caught up in the crossfire.
On September 9, Aqeel Davids, 9, was caught in apparent gang crossfire in his Ocean View home. He was wounded and later died in hospital.

Barely a month before that, on August 3, a 7-year-old boy, Ezra Daniels, was shot dead in Grassy Park.
A national anti-gang strategy is on the cards.
The origin of guns used by gangsters is already the focus of a mammoth countrywide firearms smuggling investigation, headed by the Hawks.
After a total of 33 firearms were stolen from two police stations in Cape Town about a month ago – thefts which Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said were carried out with the help of police – an audit is to be done on the guns at all stations in the Western Cape.
Sport24.co.za | Bok needs will boost Currie Cup
Johannesburg – The Currie Cup has been played out below the radar this season, but the big Springbok defeat to the All Blacks has ensured that the world’s oldest domestic competition will come into much sharper focus this coming weekend.
READ: Jaco Kriel’s season over
READ: Mitchell – Boks need new exits strategy
Bok coach Allister Coetzee’s praise for the performances of some of the members of the back three of the team that was humiliated in Albany was either a case of the management staff being in denial or wanting to protect players that have been heavily criticised. If it is the latter it is understandable as that is the way coaches are and should be, but it is hard to believe that Coetzee is not going to be watching the wings and fullbacks in action in the Currie Cup with more than just a casual interest.
On Monday Coetzee released a clutch of players, including two players on national contracts who were initially precluded from playing domestic rugby, to the provinces. As stated, there is a need for those players to play as they haven’t seen much action recently, but several of them could also make a statement that could influence selection going forward.
The match between the Sharks and the Blue Bulls in Durban on Saturday could be particularly interesting in that regard, as Handre Pollard gets his first opportunity to play a full game in quite a while. Elton Jantjies hasn’t done anything yet to merit him being dropped but the questions are starting to be asked and if he doesn’t provide the answers and Pollard produces at Currie Cup level then his recall to the No 10 jersey may not be that far away.
Warrick Gelant is winning a lot of support for his potential to be the Bok fullback, although the incumbent Andries Coetzee did draw rave reviews from the Bok coach when the squad arrived back in South Africa on Sunday. Should he and Pollard line up in the same Bulls backline at Kings Park it could be a good measurement of where they are as the Sharks are the one consistent team in the competition and possess a good defensive game.
It would be naïve to equate the modern Currie Cup with anything like international level, but the Durban game, with the Bulls having shown signs of resurgence even in defeat to the Golden Lions last week, should provide a superior quality to most of the games we have seen in the competition this year.
Dan du Preez and Chiliboy Ralepelle are the two Bok tourists released to play for the Sharks and they too could have something to gain, particularly Du Preez, as the No 8 position is not cut and dried in the continued absence of Warren Whiteley.
Western Province shouldn’t encounter too much opposition from Griquas at Newlands but there are also several players in their team that could be looking to give Coetzee a little nudge by way of a reminder of what they can do. Damian de Allende has played only off the bench for the Boks recently but could profit if Coetzee decides to tamper with a midfield that was praised in the early parts of the season but is increasingly looking short of a genuine outside centre, with Jesse Kriel’s great pace and attacking skills perhaps putting him in line for a shift to wing.
Unfortunately the forward battle probably won’t be big enough for Wilco Louw to stake a claim as the Bok starting tighthead, but there again the Bok coaches should have seen enough of him and would know his capabilities. Wing Dillyn Leyds will also be back in Currie Cup action and enjoys a lot of support from sections of the Cape media but that support seems to ignore the fact that Leyds hardly qualifies as a solution to the main weakness of the Bok back three – that being lack of physical presence.
Unfortunately the Lions aren’t in action this week as they enjoy a bye. It might have been opportune for the two Lions centres, Harold Vorster and Rohan Janse van Rensburg, to be playing, though like Louw, the Bok coaches should know the capabilities of Janse van Rensburg in particular.
Talking of knowing the capabilities of players, a player not playing Currie Cup this weekend but worthy of watching in the PRO14 is Cheetahs captain Francois Venter. The man known as Swys went with the Boks to Argentina as a travelling reserve a few weeks ago but has generally been ignored after making his international debut on last year’s end of season tour.
All of this speculation about the centres is of course predicated on the belief that the Bok coach will by now be questioning whether the incumbent, Kriel, is really a centre and not perhaps a wing. He has the gas for the latter but perhaps not the tactical nous for the former.

eNCA | US puts Thulsie twins on terrorist list
JOHANNESBURG – The United States (US) Department of State has placed Tony-Lee and Brandon-Lee Thulsie on its terrorism list.
The designation serves to warn the international community that they pose a risk of committing terrorism acts.
In July 2016, the Thulsie twins were arrested during raids for their alleged links to Islamic State (IS).
At the time of their arrest, the brothers apparently plotted attacks targeting Jewish individuals and institutions as well the US Embassy in South Africa.
Both men attempted to travel to Syria to fight for IS and recruited others to join the terror group.
Tony-Lee also allegedly communicated with IS-linked individuals to discuss how to build and obtain explosive devices.
Brandon-Lee worked at Discovery at the time of his arrest.

eNCA | US will ‘totally destroy’ N Korea if threatened: Trump tells UN
NEW YORK – US President Donald Trump vowed on Tuesday to “totally destroy” North Korea unless Pyongyang backs down from its nuclear challenge, mocking North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a “rocket man” on a suicide mission.
It was Trump’s most direct threat to attack North Korea for belligerent acts that have included launching ballistic missiles over Japan and conducting underground nuclear tests.
His comments rattled the world leaders gathered before him in the green-marbled UN General Assembly hall, where minutes earlier UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had appealed for statesmanship.
“The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” Trump said.
As loud, startled murmurs filled the hall, Trump described Kim in an acid tone, saying, “Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime.”

— TIME (@TIME) September 19, 2017
One man in the audience covered his face with his hands shortly after Trump made his “totally destroy” comment. Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom crossed her arms.
North Korea’s mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s remarks.
A junior North Korean diplomat sat in the delegation’s front-row seat for Trump’s speech, the North Korean U.N. mission said.
Trump’s saber-rattling rhetoric was in contrast to the comments of some of his own Cabinet members who have stated their preference for a diplomatic solution.
In a thunderous 41-minute speech, Trump also took aim at Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional influence, Venezuela’s collapsing democracy and the threat of Islamist extremists.

He also criticised the Cuban government.
“Major portions of the world are in conflict and some, in fact, are going to hell,” he said.
His strongest words were directed at North Korea. He urged United Nations member states to work together to isolate the Kim government until it ceases its “hostile” behavior.
He said North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles “threatens the entire world with unthinkable cost of human life.”
In what may have been a veiled prod at China, the North’s major trading partner, Trump said: “It is an outrage that some nations would not only trade with such a regime but would arm, supply and financially support a country that imperils the world with nuclear conflict.”

Turning to Iran, Trump called the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated by his predecessor, Barack Obama, an embarrassment and hinted that he may not recertify the agreement when it comes up for a mid-October deadline.
“I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it,” he said.
He called Iran an “economically depleted rogue state” that exports violence.
There was no immediate comment from either Iran’s UN delegation or its foreign ministry in Tehran.
The speech marked Trump’s latest attempt to lay out his America First vision for a US foreign policy aimed at downgrading global bureaucracies, basing alliances on shared interests, and steering Washington away from nation-building exercises abroad.

Trump told the 193-member global body that the US did not seek to impose its will on other nations and would respect other countries’ sovereignty.
“I will defend America’s interests above all else,” he said. “But in fulfilling our obligations to other nations we also realize it’s in everyone’s interest to seek a future where all nations can be sovereign, prosperous and secure.”
Reading carefully from a script, Trump said the US military would soon be the strongest it has ever been.
Trump called the collapsing situation in Venezuela “completely unacceptable” and said the United States could not stand by and watch. He warned the United States was considering what further actions it can take.
“We cannot stand by and watch,” he said.
Shortly before Trump’s speech, Guterres appealed from the General Assembly lectern for statesmanship to avoid war with North Korea.
“We must not sleepwalk our way into war,” said Guterres, the former prime minister of Portugal.
The UN Security Council has unanimously imposed nine rounds of sanctions on North Korea since 2006 and Guterres appealed for the 15-member body to maintain its unity on North Korea.
Financial markets showed little reaction to Trump’s speech, with most major assets hovering near the unchanged mark on the day.
