Health24.com | Look at these extreme cases of tanning – it’s called ‘tanorexia’
Some celebrities take tanning to the extreme. Nicole Snooki LaValle, previous cast member of the MTV hit reality show Jersey Shore is one of them.
There is actually a name for this. An obsession with tanning, whether it’s from the sun or a bottle, is called tanorexia.
An actual addiction
The need to look like a golden beach goddess is an aesthetic thing. Especially in the USA, a tan is associated with health and a pale skin with illness. The sun became associated with health when Arnold Rikli first used light therapy in 1855 to treat tuberculosis.
A sunbathed skin became popular in the 1920 through Coco Chanel, who further popularised sunbathing. Fast forward to the 2000s, to a slew of celebs who just can’t resist showing off a sun-tanned body. And while most people are fully aware of the dangers of too much sun, there are those who just can’t help themselves.
The fact that studies have shown that a tanned skin is associated with attraction, does nothing to curb this potentially deadly obsession .
And a sunbathed skin is not only about achieving good looks.
According to The American Skin Cancer Foundation, frequent tanners exhibit signs of both physical and psychological dependence, resulting in symptoms of increased tolerance, craving, and withdrawal. UV light can increase the release of opioid-like endorphins, feel-good chemicals that relieve pain and generate feelings of well-being. This means tanning is a real addiction, just like drugs and alcohol.
The wrong side of tanning
Still think there’s no such thing as too much tanning?
Look at this video to get a glimpse of some of the most extreme cases of tanning:
Too much sun
It goes without saying that too much sun increases your risk for skin cancer. According to statistics published in a Health24 article, South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia. It’s as simple as that – the more exposure to UV rays, the higher your risk of skin cancer. And it’s not just cancer – premature ageing and sun damaged skin will most certainly be your fate if you spend too much time in the sun.
Too many chemicals
While “self tan” products don’t expose you to damaging UV rays, you are still exposing your body to more chemicals than you normally would. And there is a debate on whether self tan is safe to use or not.
Self tan contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), an active colour additive that causes the top layer of the skin to darken. In small amounts, this additive is not carcinogenic and poses no real health risk.
Yet there is a more recent addition to the tanning market, self-tanning pills. These pills contain the colour additive canthaxanthin and are generally considered unsafe. In high doses, canthaxanthin can cause hives or damage to the liver or vision.
Be sun smart
- Wear and regularly reapply SPF50.
- When you choose to have a spray tan, only go to reputable salons.
- Do careful product research and educate yourself about the active ingredients.

eNCA | Where is black consciousness in contemporary SA?
JOHANNESBURG – The commemoration of Steve Biko’s death has prompted statements from many politicians urging the public to remember and preserve the legacy of the revolutionary thought leader.
READ: Steve Biko was ‘a down to earth person’: Nontsikelelo Biko
Biko died in a police cell at the then Pretoria Central Prison (now Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre) following his arrest in August 1977.
He had been savagely beaten by apartheid security police while in police detention in Port Elizabeth and sustained serious injuries including brain damage.
Biko founded the Black Consciousness movement, urging young people to commit themselves to the fight against apartheid.
In his article Black Consciousness and the Quest for True Humanity, Biko noted that, “the racism we meet is not only on an individual basis; is it also institutionalised to make it look like the South African way of life. Although of late there is a feeble attempt to gloss over the racist elements in the system, it is still true that the system derives its nourishment from anti-black attitudes in society.”
eNCA asked the former president of the Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo), Dr Itumeleng Mosala about the position of black consciousness in South African society today.
Mosala explained that Black Consciousness has never been more important than it is today.
He described the emphasis placed on the dignity of the human person and in particular the dignity of the black person considering what the system of apartheid was intended to do: dehumanise black people.
He further explained that Black Consciousness always linked apartheid to colonialism, which had in many different ways facilitated the dehumanisation of black people.
“The view was always when our own people take over political machinery and when freedom comes there will be an undoubted affirmation of the dignity of black people,” Mosala said.
He said the last 22 years, with the exception of the Constitution, have seen nothing but the continuity of the oppression of black people, including violence against women and children, lack of access to basic services, and poor community safety.
“Because we call ourselves democratic, the challenges are bigger than before. When the president of the country behaves as President Zuma behaves, the principles of Black Consciousness have been negated. When we have a ruling party that is arrogant and (has) not cared about ordinary people… If you look at our failures in the education system there is absolutely no doubt that the principles of Black Consciousness have been negated,” Mosala explained.
He ascribed the decline of the popularity of the name of the Black Consciousness movement on a lack of resources and access to political power saying, “we were not popular enough in the beginning.”
After winning one seat in the 2004 and 2009 national elections, Azapo lost that too in the 2014 election. In 2006 it won 0.3% in local government elections, which declined to 0.2% in 2011.
He said that although it is not named, the principles of Black Consciousness live on.
At its inauguration in 2015, Socialist Party of Azania (Sopa) president Lybon Mabasa said the EFF represented the future of and a new possibility for South Africa and Sopa “was not afraid to associate with anybody who said the land must be returned to its owners and that the mines must be nationalised … The EFF can be assured of our support.”

Your Essential Guide to Yoga
Want to take full advantage of that powerful collection of benefits? Read on for everything you need to know, whether you are a first timer or a regular looking to take your poses to a whole new level.
If you are just beginning or want the best mind/body combo, try Hatha
Poses are straightforward, and the pace unhurried. "You do a pose, come out of it, then do another," explains Mark Stephens, author of Teaching Yoga: Essential Foundations and Techniques. "Its an excellent style for beginners." Props like blocks and bolsters are often used to help you get the right alignment. But its not just about the body, as your teacher will also encourage you to focus on breathing, relaxation, and meditation (which may involve chanting). And all of this mindfulness has a real-world benefit: A study in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine found that women who practice Hatha yoga once or twice a week recover from stress faster than those who dont.
If you want to get slim, try Ashtanga Power Yoga
These two provide all the regular benefits of yoga with the fat-blasting bonus of a killer cardio session. Both styles focus on flowing from one pose to the next without restmaking for a terrific calorie burn (about 500 per hour). "The practice is meant to generate heat in your body," says Mandy Ingber, the yoga instructor behind Jennifer Anistons ageless body. So, yes, you will sweat. A lot.
In Ashtanga, the more traditional of the two, youll begin with chanting, then follow a sequence of poses ("asanas") that never changes. In a Power yoga class, the poses vary each time and theres usually none of the spiritual aspect.
A large study in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine confirmsthat women get lean in these classes: Practicing yoga of any kind at least once a week for four years or more stavesoff middle-age spread.
Named for the calm half of yin-and-yang, this style requires you to move slowly into poses (most of them seated or lying down), then stay there for up to five minutes to allow for a xdeeper stretch and time to just, well, be.
Not surprisingly, Yin yoga is particularly good at activating the part of your nervous system that helps you bounce back from pain and stress, says Sara Gottfried, MD, an integrative physician in Berkeley, California, and author of the forthcoming book The Hormone Cure. Expect meditative music and lots of attention to breathing, as well as those centers of spiritual energy known as chakrasall elements that add to the serene allure of the practice.
If youre prone to aches, try Iyengar
As in many types of yoga, the poses youll do in an Iyengar class are traditional. The difference is in how those poses are done. Iyengar teachers are trained in biomechanics, so they understand which positions are most likely to cause injuriesand how to modify them by tweaking your form and showing you how to use props to make them less intense, says Stephens. Plus, a pause between poses (as opposed to flowing from one to the other) allows you to perfect your position, so youre less likely to strain something.
Iyengar may even help you recover from injury. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that a similar style of yoga, Viniyoga, worked wonders on chronic low back pain in just 12 weeks.
Find the right class
The truth is, you can find a great instructor and class in a church basement, and a questionable one in a fancy yoga studio. Just keep in mind this rule-of-thumb: Your teacher should be properly trained, with at least a 200-hour certification
from Yoga Alliance, the main yoga education organization in the United States. Below, the scoop on your options:
Yoga studio
The coaching: Most require teachers to have Yoga Alliance certification. Some also require additional in-house training so teachers can learn the studios specific style.
The classes: Practice rooms are zen-like and class options abound. Studios that are part of national chains may also offer lockers and showers.
The crowd: Morning classes tend to be smaller (10 to 20 people), but post-work classes may be packed. "In big classes theres usually additional help from yoga instructors who are being mentored by the main teacher," says KayKay Clivio, head of teacher training at Pure Yoga.
The cost: $12 to $20 per class; $100 to $190 per month for unlimited classes. Ask about free trial classes.
The coaching: Teachers are usually certified by Yoga Alliance, but since many gyms dont pay well, you may end up with a teacher whos certified but less experienced, says Timothy McCall, MD, author of Yoga as Medicine.
The classes: Most gyms provide props and a variety of classes, including yoga hybrids (though the benefits of pure yoga often get lost); atmosphere is less serene than a studios. Then again, you get to hit the steam room after class.
The crowd: After-work classes average 25 to 40 peopleusually without additional teaching helpand classmates may be less serious about yoga.
The cost: Usually free with gym membership.
The rec center
The coaching: Teachers sometimes have group-fitness (as opposed to yoga-specific) certification, which is not ideal.
The classes: Usually a few styles with BYO props.
The crowd: Classes tend to be crowded.
The cost: Many charge by the class, others by the year. Discounts are often available for residents.
In the end, what matters is that youre comfortable in the class. If that first one isnt a good fit, try a different style, a different teacher, or both. And once you find that perfect combination, stick with it, says Dr. McCall: "Youll get the most benefits from yoga if youre a regular."
