News24.com | It is essential that the ANC elects a female president – Lindiwe Sisulu
Cape Town – It is essential that the National Congress (ANC) elect a female president at its elective conference in December, regardless of who that woman might be, presidential hopeful Lindiwe Sisulu said on Thursday evening.
Sisulu said “it’s a must” because a female president reflects the desired change in the country.
“Whether it is Nkosazana [Dlamini-Zuma], whether it is comrade Baleka [Mbete] or anybody… I think it is time now that a woman took the lead,” she said.
Sisulu, 63, was delivering the key note address at a Sasco organised Women’s Day event at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)’s Bellville campus.
The lecture hall was filled to capacity.
Sisulu said no man should present himself as an ANC member if he is accused of gender based violence, “irrespective if he is a deputy minister of state”.
“Almost subconsciously men will always hold onto power to ensure that their dominance remains,” she said to loud applause from the crowd.
“Men who abuse women either emotionally or physically are extremely insecure.”
Sisulu said she is in discussions with lawyers to make sure that the minimum sentence for a rapist is twenty years in prison without parole.
She said she “accepted the invitation” to stand for president of the ANC, because she wants to be “counted amongst those who returned the true values of the ANC”.
“I became very concerned, like most people, that our fortunes were not as good as they were in the past, that our popularity was waning, that something has gone wrong in something we ourselves were doing and I needed to be part of the change to see change come about,” she said.
Her campaign promises include free education and an overview of all government policies to ensure they stimulate job growth.
“We must revive the ANC values, it’s a must,” she said at the end of her address.
Sport24.co.za | AB: Proteas will miss Russell Domingo
Cape Town – Proteas star batsman AB de Villiers has bid farewell and thanked outgoing Russell Domingo as South African national coach.
Earlier this week, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed Domingo’s successor as former West Indian bowler Ottis Gibson.
CSA decided to appoint Domingo as the coach of the South Africa ‘A’ side.
Domingo took over from Gary Kirsten as Proteas coach in 2013 with the recent 3-1 England Test series defeat his final assignment at the helm.
De Villiers posted a video via his app, AB17, and thanked Domingo for the “impact” he played on the him and his team-mates.
“We’ll miss Russell Domingo a lot, he has had a fantastic run as coach we got along with him really well,” said De Villiers.
“He has had a big impact on all of us as cricketers.
“Well done to Russ on a great cricketing career as a coach.”
This is not forever farewell for De Villiers and Domingo, as the duo will be in the same changeroom for the inaugural T20 Global League.
Domingo will be coaching the Pretoria Mavericks with De Villiers selected as the South African Marquee player.
Sport24.co.za | Khune pays tribute to fallen Chiefs goalkeeping coach
Cape Town – Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has expressed sadness over goalkeeping coach Alexandre Revoredo, who unexpectedly passed away on Thursday.
Chiefs announced that the club’s goalkeeper coach, Revoredo, had tragically passed away although no details were given about how it happened.
He was 57.
Khune took to Twitter to express his condolences and thanks to the Revoredo on the impact he played on his career.
“May Your Soul Rest In Eternal Peace #Beleza thanks a lot for the role you played in my career. I’m going to miss you,” wrote the Bafana Bafana player.
Revoredo, who was born in Rio de Janeiro, arrived in South Africa in 2007 to work alongside Julio Leal at AmaZulu.
Aside from his coaching career with Usuthu, he also spent time with PSL clubs including Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates.
He spent four years with the Sea Robbers and left in 2015. Revoredo then joined Chiefs to work with head coach Steve Komphela and has been with them since 2016.
Nonetheless, his death still comes as something of a shock as it was seemingly apparent he was not in any ill health.

eNCA | UDM wants High Court to reinstate Bobani
PORT ELIZABETH – The United Democratic Movement (UDM) lodged an urgent application in the Port Elizabeth High Court to have the motion of no confidence vote against ousted deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani set aside.
Bobani was ousted as deputy mayor in a vote was passed while opposition parties were leaving the council chambers.
UDM leader Bantu Holomisa said the application sought to prevent the municipality from implementing the August 24 decision and to have Bobani reinstated.
“I trust that the High Court will separate fact from fiction and that the honourable court will see through the [Democratic Alliance] DA’s politicking and identify the DA’s smear campaign against Bobani and the UDM,” he said.
“The DA, claiming good governance at every turn, should have known better than to have proceeded with the motion; should know better than to defend the illicit decision to remove the deputy executive mayor.”
Bobani filed the papers on Thursday afternoon and told the media that he was not in a position to comment on the application and referred questions to Holomisa.
The application lists 132 respondents, including all councillors of the municipality, as well as the speaker of the municipality, the city manager, and all political parties that have representation in Mandela Bay.
Holomisa said the mechanics of the introduction and acceptance of, and the voting on, and the decision of Council to pass a motion of no confidence in Bobani was unconstitutional and unlawful from the outset and should be set aside.
“What the DA claims, and what the DA does; what the DA promises, and what the DA delivers, remain alarmingly divergent,” he said.
Holomisa said there was no factual or legal grounds for the removal of Bobani who had not been formally accused of any wrongdoing; had not been granted any opportunity to defend himself on the alleged accusations of wrongdoing.
Mayor Athol Trollip said he had not yet seen the papers but said the municipality would oppose the application.
“We know why we voted in a vote of no confidence against councillor Bobani. He has shown no commitment to our co-governance agreement,” he said.
“As far as we are concerned, he is the former deputy mayor and that is that.”
Respondents have until 8 September 8 to file answering affidavits, while the UDM’s legal counsel will file responding papers by the 14th and the provisional court date set down is 19 September.

eNCA | Zuma ‘not involved’ in granting Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity
CAPE TOWN – President Jacob Zuma said he was not involved in the decision to extend diplomatic immunity to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s wife Grace after she allegedly assaulted a model earlier this month.
Answering a question from Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane in Parliament, Zuma said it was wrong to say he had allowed an abuse of the rule of law, as police had been eager to investigate the matter.
“The police were very active, were very involved in dealing with that matter, and then actions were taken,” he said, referring to Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane’s announcement that Grace Mugabe had been granted immunity.
Zuma said he could not answer Maimane — who had asked on what grounds she was given immunity — as he had no part in the deliberations and the decision.
“I was not involved in the process. So I am not going to give you an answer that is not there,” he said.
“I am not a lawyer and I don’t know how the matter came to a point where it came. I can’t lie.”
The decision is being challenged in court by the model, Gabriella Engels, and civil rights group, AfriForum.
Engels claimed Mugabe savagely beat her with an extension cord.
