My typical week of workouts typically means a couple of spin classes along with a weight-training day and the occasional yoga session. Being bored while sweating is my biggest exercise turn-off, which is why I love to mix things up in terms of style and intensity.
So when I had the chance to try a Daily Ultimate Training (DUT) class at a UFC Gym in New York City, I thought, why not?
If you're unfamiliar with DUT, I can tell you that this workout lives up to its name, that's for sure. The boot camp–style class involves an active warmup followed by a circuit of exercises that test your stamina, agility, and core strength.
"These types of workouts replicate the pace of a fight and provide the conditioning to build the best structural foundation for [a fighter's] body to prevent pain and push them to their pinnacle both in and outside the octagon," explained Javier Lee, training manager at UFC Gym SoHo, in an email to Health.

No two DUT classes are the same, but a typical session might include exercises like box jumps, burpees, push-ups, squats, and footwork drills in a Tabata–style structure. (Tabata workouts alternate a period of work with a period of rest.)
I arrived at the UFC gym on a sweltering Thursday evening with my friend Nora in tow. I expected to receive hand wraps and boxing gloves for our class—after all, this was a gym geared toward training fighters. But we were instead ushered to a patch of fake grass with about 10 other DUT-ers.
There, we began the class with a light jog, lots of lunges, and squats of all varieties. Don't stop! our instructor yelled as he pushed down on my shoulders, signaling to sink deeper into my lunge. My legs were on fire. I felt tears in my eyes. And that was only the first 10 minutes of class.
After this warmup, our instructor set up nine stations, each featuring a different exercise. We split up into pairs and Nora and I snagged what appeared to be the easiest station. Unfortunately, nothing in this workout was easy. For the remainder of class, we spent two minutes at each station, taking 15-second breaks between each until we completed all nine exercises. The circuit included:
Rather than remain stationary, we were tasked with shimmying down the wall until fully seated. Then, we extend our legs for a moment, bent our knees again, and had to stand up without our hands, using only our back and ab muscles.
This classic bodyweight exercise involved planting your hands on a windowsill, bending your elbows and extending them for an upper-arm burn.
"I don't think I can jump that high," Nora whispered to me as we approached the 3-foot cushioned box. With a bit of arm swinging for momentum, we got through it.

With our feet propped against a windowsill while positioned downward, we used our shoulder muscles to complete the exercise.
After planting our feet on the ground, we grabbed a thick hanging rope and climbed up and down to work our chest, arms, and core.
Think bear crawls while pulling a 20-pound kettlebell beneath you, alternating pulling with just the left arm, then the right.
We lifted the weighted bags overhead, then twisted to the side and slammed them down onto a tire in front of us.
Why do a stationary plank when you can throw in a little ab-blasting movement? We tightened our cores in a normal plank position, then placed our hands, palms down, on elliptical pedals and pedaled it out.
We finished up the circuit on the rowing machine doing reps of this classic back, arm, and shoulder move.
The hour-long class didn't end there. Following the nine-exercise circuit, we hit the faux grass again for ab exercises such as crunches, bicycles, and scissor kicks before finishing up with some much-needed stretching.

Following a tough sweat session, it usually takes me at least a few hours or until the next morning to feel the muscle aches that tell me my body was challenged. But by the time I finished the warmup at UFC Gym, I already knew that my legs would burn for the hours and days that followed (my abs, shoulders, and upper arms were sore too). I waddled home from class, my legs feeling like Jell-O.
After DUT, I gained a whole new appreciation for the time and effort fighters like Ronda Rousey, Conor McGregor, and Floyd Mayweather put into their fitness regimens. Being a top-notch UFC fighter isn't just about throwing the perfect jab or uppercut. It also involves next-level stamina, not to mention mental strength. When my legs finally stop aching, I plan to head back for another push-me-to-my-limits workout.

Businessman Sazi Fakude, a close companion of Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu, has been accused of raping a young woman he allegedly abducted from a Sandton nightclub.
The 25-year-old student alleged she was raped by Fakude in the early hours of Monday morning.
Police confirmed a rape complaint was opened.
Fakude said yesterday: “I am aware of the allegations. The case was opened. What do you guys want from me?”
He asked for questions to be sent by SMS. His lawyer, Graeme Krawitz, says his client hasn’t been charged yet and he has no comment at this stage.
In a lengthy police statement, the woman said she was partying at the Hydro Lounge in Sandton, and “when the club was about to close, a guy known to me as Sazi walked in and greeted us”.
In her statement, the woman says she knew Fakude because he once dated a friend of hers. She left him with her friends and went to the bathroom, but returned to find them arguing.
“I tried to calm him down to make peace and he asked me to go with him to his car so that he can calm down.
“I agreed to accompany him to his car, because I thought he was my best friend’s ex-boyfriend and he wasn’t going to do anything to me,” she said.
“We went to his car and while I was telling him to behave well in public because he’s a respected person, he drove off [with me] without my permission.”
The woman alleges that what followed was a night of hell during which she feared for her life.
She sent her friends a series of terrified WhatsApp messages between 04:45 and 05:48, including “He’s gonna kill me” and “Bring police. I’m begging you”.
The mother of one alleges that Fakude drove her to his home in Kempton Park and became violent when she called her friends to fetch her.
“I sent my friends a location so that whatever happened to me on that morning, they knew where I was,” she says.
One of the woman’s friends, who asked not to be named, confirmed receiving the messages.
The woman claimed Fakude had looked her in the eyes and told her she “wasn’t going anywhere” and that no girl says no to him.
“He told me he wanted to have sex with me. I told him that’s not going to happen,” the young woman said.
“He then slapped me several times and strangled me for a while. He smashed my phone on the floor and threatened to kill me if I made a noise. I was hopeless, lying down… he undressed me and forced himself on me.”
Her friends arrived at the house with police at 08:00 that morning. They were late because they had no money for a taxi to take them there.
“Sazi begged me not to open the case and he said I must just name a price, he’ll give me whatever I want. I refused and left his place and I told him we’ll meet in court,” she alleged.
Gauteng spokesperson captain Mavela Masondo confirmed a case of rape had been opened, but said no arrest was yet made. “We are investigating.”
Asked about the nature of her relationship with Fakude on Friday, all that Zulu would say was, “Yes, I know him”.
Asked about pictures of them together on his Instagram account in which they appear to shop and dine together, Zulu said:
“There’s absolutely no shopping. I don’t shop with any other people. I work, shop alone with my own money. If it happens, we have a lunch in any place, it’s just a lunch and we come out for fun; we just take fun pictures.
“There’s absolutely nothing to it.”
Cape Town – The Springboks, in bright red, secured a 41-23 bonus-point win over Argentina in Salta on Saturday night to make it two from two in the Rugby Championship this year.
AS IT HAPPENED: PUMAS 23-41 SPRINGBOKS
Siya Kolisi scored two tries for the Boks, who have won their first away game under coach Allister Coetzee.
The Boks were poor in the first quarter.
Argentina took the lead through an Emiliano Boffelli penalty while Elton Jantjies missed two early shots at goal of his own from relatively routine positions.
But it wasn’t Jantjies’ two misses that made it a poor start for the Boks.
They battled to hold onto their own ball, gifting the Pumas possession through unforced errors, and they couldn’t capitalise on a one-man advantage when Tomas Lavanini was sent to the bin for a dangerous tackle on Coenie Oosthuizen.
With the Bok struggling, Jantjies then sparked a moment of magic.
He recieved the ball off the top of a lineout and went for the little chip over a rushing defensive line. Jesse Kriel was on hand to gather and he showed good hands to release Siya Kolisi, who went in under the posts for his third Test try.
Jantjies knocked over the extras, and the Boks would have felt far better with a 7-3 lead.
The Bok No 10 then slotted a penalty to make it 10-3, but the visitors were woeful from the restart, allowing the ball to bounce before Ramiro Moyano cantered through to the line uncontested to score the softest of tries.
At 10-10, errors from both sides plagued the rest of the half.
The Pumas were dealt a massive blow just before the break when they lost Juan Manuel Leguizamon to their second yellow card, and from the resulting penalty the Boks set up an attacking lineout.
It had looked like the sides would go into half time all square, but from the lineout the ball moved to the backline where Jantjies spotted a gap and crashed his way towards the line, reaching over to get the Boks their second try and secure a 17-10 lead.
Argentina hit back with an early penalty just after the restart to close the gap, and they were camped on the Bok line soon after that, threatening to take the lead.
The Springboks somehow won the turnover and launched a counter-attack from their own line that result in their third try – and Kolisi’s second – of the night.
Things then got from bad to worse for Argentina when, just before the hour mark, Lavanini was shown a second yellow card, and a red, for a deliberate knock-down that prevented Kolisi going in for his third try.
The Boks were awarded a penalty try as a result, and at 31-13 ahead, it looked to be plain sailing from there.
That was not the case.
Matias Orlando scored a try for the hosts and when Andries Coetzee went diving into him after he had already scored, the Springbok fullback was shown a yellow card.
Boffelli knocked over a penalty from the restart, and all-of-a-sudden the scoreboard read 31-23.
Jantjies then kicked a penalty to stretch the lead back to 11 points, but Jean-Luc du Preez’s first Test try in the dying stages put the game to bed.
Scorers:
Argentina 23 (10)

South Africa 41 (17)

Johannesburg – IPID head Robert McBride has been accused of assaulting his own teenage daughter, a charge he vehemently denied in a lengthy statement issued by his spokesperson on Saturday.
The head of the police watchdog broke his silence after news broke earlier that he was being investigated for the assault of a minor child.
Speaking “with a heavy heart”, he said he decided to issue the statement after his daughter’s details were being circulated by people who had failed by other means to get rid of him.
The latest attempt was a woman who had asked him unsuccessfully to squash a traffic fine, he claimed.
“I admit that I admonished one of my daughters, whom I love very much,” said McBride.
He explained that he had become concerned about his daughter’s school marks and “somewhat rebellious” behaviour, and had admonished her, but never assaulted her.
“My daughter was seated directly behind me in the car, it would have been impossible for me to drive and ‘assault’ and ‘throttle’ her at the same time,” he said.
“I deny that I assaulted her and that she had any injuries when I left her at home. I have already indicated to the police that I will co-operate fully with the investigation.”
McBride continued: “I would do anything for my daughter, she means everything to me.”
‘Abduction’
He said a woman, who he named in his statement, allegedly took his daughter away from him without his permission, nor the permission of any official authorities such as a “guardian, teacher, doctor, district surgeon or youth counsellor”.
He said that the woman had a “long history” of opening cases against people in alleged attempts at extorting money from parents and he had recently refused to squash a traffic fine for her.
“She was upset with me for refusing to assist her to break the law.”
But the clincher, to McBride, was that she became a person of interest in an investigation the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is conducting.
He has in the meantime opened a counter investigation against the woman for the alleged abduction of his daughter, and will not say anything more about the issue.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has thrown its weight behind McBride, saying the assault claim was a conspiracy against him.

It claimed the woman had, since 1998, allegedly opened at least 11 cases at various police stations for crimes including theft, fraud, assault, giving a false name to police, and accusing a parent of beating up a child.
A plot called “Project Wonder” had been uncovered, which purportedly planned a hit on McBride because of his work regarding investigations on corrupt police activities.
Police spokesperson Major General Sally de Beer told News24 she has never seen the Project Wonder document and had no knowledge of its existence.
JOHANNESBURG – Four people were injured after their vehicle collided with a train in Tarlton in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg, on Saturday.
Paramedics found all occupants were out of the vehicle and had sustained injuries that ranged from moderate to serious,” said ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huyssteen.
Patients were taken to various hospitals.
The cause of the collision will remain a subject of an investigation by Metrorail and police.
