News24.com | Limpopo lawyer sought for questioning in shooting of farm workers
Polokwane – Police in Limpopo have called on a prominent lawyer to come forward to assist in connection with an investigation of attempted murder.
It is alleged that the lawyer was at Zebediela Citrus farm – south of Polokwane on Thursday morning – when workers demanded that he explain wage deductions from 2016 during his tenure at the farm.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the lawyer could assist them with the investigations following a shooting at the farm which left four people injured.
Speaking from the scene, Ngoepe said they received a report about the shooting at the farm.
“This morning, we got a report that there was [a] shooting incident. We found that four people were shot and injured by a prominent lawyer in this province. We are still following him, but the motive is still subject to our investigations. [It] is still early now for us to say for what.
“We are calling all members of the community who are aware of [his] whereabouts; they must inform him to hand himself to a local police station to come and assist us with the investigations,” said Ngoepe.
He said one of the victims was seriously injured, while the three others are in a stable condition.
Sport24.co.za | Lions’ Te’o relishing All Blacks clash
Cape Town – Ben Te’o’s remarkable rise through rugby union continued on Thursday when he was named to start for the Lions in the first Test against the All Blacks this weekend.
But the England centre insists he is taking it all in his stride as he prepares for the clash at Eden Park on Saturday night.
This time last year the 30-year-old the rugby league convert – born in Auckland and who cut his teeth in the NRL – had not yet made his international debut.
And now he lines up alongside Jonathan Davies in midfield in the biggest match of his fledgling rugby union career.
And the eight-cap centre, who has played the full 80 minutes in the Lions Tour wins over the NZ Provincial Barbarians, the Crusaders and the Maori All Blacks, is ready for the next challenge.
“It feels great, I have come on a journey through rugby union and I am very humbled and proud to be named in this team alongside so many world-class players,” he told the British and Irish Lions’ official website.
“From when selections were made I was not thinking that I would be in, it came as quite a shock.
“And once I got on the plane I realised that every opportunity I got I had to try and seize, every game was a trial match.
“I just tried to play my best rugby, that is what I have been doing and I am happy that I have done enough that the coaches have showed some faith in me to play me.
“But it is only the beginning now, the real test is coming on Saturday and I am fully aware of what is coming.
“I understand the record, their standing in the game at the moment and just where the All Blacks are at in terms of their rugby.
“I understand it is going to be tough and we will have to be at our best compared to them.”
Te’o is set to come up against his fellow code hopper Sonny Bill Williams who will wear the number 12 for the All Blacks on Saturday.
But the centre welcomes the potential duel, and admits he is still learning his craft in his second code.
“I would say I am close (to my peak), there is still a lot to learn,” he added.
“A lot of the things you learn now are through games, yes you can pick some things up from watching some vision but most things and situations you find you have to go through it on the field.
“And every time you step up in bigger games you keep learning little things, I will learn a lot on Saturday and if I get another opportunity I will learn again so i am quite anxious and ready to face it.”
Te’o was actually born in Auckland, hailing from North Harbour, before taking his talents to Australia and the NRL.
But his family in the crowd have been told under no uncertain terms who they are to cheer for this weekend.
“I left here a long time ago,” added the Worcester Warrior.
“I grew up just up the road and played a bit of rugby here in the QBE stadium so I know it well but left here at 17 and gone on a long journey and I am here now with the Lions, I would not say it is anything different.
“I have got some family here, they are looking forward to the game, they are kitted out in the Lions gear and they know who to support!”
eNCA | #SecretBallot: SA politicians react to Secret Ballot ruling on twitter
JOHANNESBURG – The Secret Ballot (or #SecretBallot) ruling has come and gone but the reaction from politicians are only now filtering through social media.
Read: Lekota: ConCourt judgment on secret ballot a triumph for democracy
To clarify, Chief Justice Mogoeng has ruled that Baleka Mbete does in fact have power to declare a secret ballot during the motion of no confidence against President Zuma. Previously she cited the law as a limiting factor.
For some, this is a clear win for South Africa’s justice system, but it also now puts emphasis on Mbete, she can now declare a secret ballot, or choose not to.
As for South Africa’s other politicians, the ruling was a victory, a contentious issue, and a reason to engage in a little subtweeting.
Julius Malema vs Fikile Mbalula: the subtweet saga
South Africans must guard separation of powers jealously. Mogoeng took the right steps today. We welcome this #SecrerBallot ruling, absolutely
— RSA Police Minister (@MbalulaFikile) June 22, 2017
As for the latter, we’re talking about EFF leader Julius Malema and current police minister Fikile Mbalula’s tweets.
#SecrerBallot ruling teaches Opposition must convince the ANC inside parliament & not run to courts over politics…. why they lost today
— RSA Police Minister (@MbalulaFikile) June 22, 2017
Mbalula, who has never been shy to smash that tweet button, welcomed the ruling but also threw shade on opposition parties.
Malema wasn’t having it.
If you think you won, why do you sound so disgruntled. The whole minister left his duties to justify that Parliment won a case
— Julius Sello Malema (@Julius_S_Malema) June 22, 2017
“South Africans must guard separation of powers jealously. Mogoeng took the right steps today. We welcome this #SecrerBallot ruling, absolutely [sic],” he tweeted.
One thing I know is that this Minister did not read the court papers and will not read this judgment but he’s busy tweeting about it, hai
— Julius Sello Malema (@Julius_S_Malema) June 22, 2017
Mbalula responded.
#SecretBallot ruling is helpful as is, some disgruntled opposition members are calling us – they’ll vote with ANC Collective on key matters.
— RSA Police Minister (@MbalulaFikile) June 22, 2017
As did Malema.
Your drinking mate Baleka said she doesn’t have discretion to grant secrete ballot. We said she does & the court agreed with us Minister
— Julius Sello Malema (@Julius_S_Malema) June 22, 2017
But Mbalula had the final word.
I don’t know where drinking fits in. Last time I checked you were my drinking partner. Some amongst us wanted the Speaker to be forced.
— RSA Police Minister (@MbalulaFikile) June 22, 2017
Campaigning, victory speeches and even less confidence
Other politicians refrained from subtweeting and took to campaigning instead, like DA leader Mmusi Maimane. “My vote is not #secret. Zuma must go,” he tweets, ending the line with #change19.
My vote is not #secret Zuma must go. 9 million unemployed, state run by Guptas, rampant corruption of institutions& SOE’s.We need #change19
— Mmusi Maimane (@MmusiMaimane) June 22, 2017
The EFF members were seemingly in full voice on Twitter. Floyd Shivambu praised Justice Mogoeng’s ruling, stating that “Superior Logic always triumphs!”
Superior Logic always triumphs!
— Floyd Shivambu (@FloydShivambu) June 22, 2017
The Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula welcomed the ruling. The party’s spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi suggested that the decision calls to question Mbete’s “capacity as speaker”.
That ConCourt had to correct Mbete’s wrong decision again is a statement of no confidence in her capacity as Speaker #SecretBallot
— IG: @MbuyiseniNdlozi (@MbuyiseniNdlozi) June 22, 2017
The UDM’s president Bantu Holomisa took to Facebook with a longer statement. He suggests that the UDM “has been vindicated with the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the Speaker of the National Assembly could facilitate a secret ballot in a no-confidence motion in President Zuma.” “We thank our legal team, as well as political parties and civil society organisations who supported us all the way,” he adds.
The DA’s chief whip John Steenhuizen, like Ndlozi, also called into question Mbete’s competence as Speaker of Parliament.
Once again the Speaker being schooled by the Concourt in how to do her job. When does it start getting embarrassing???
— John Steenhuisen MP (@jsteenhuisen) June 22, 2017
The ANC and DA respond And as for parties’ responses, the ANC’s official Twitter account led the charge with a fiercely worded tweet in all-caps. “#ANC WELCOMES CONCOURT’S REFUSAL TO BE ABUSED BY OPPOSITON PARTIES WANTING TO CO-GOVERN WITH NO POPULAR MANDATE,” it writes.

Finally, the DA reiterated the message of its leader Maimane.

News24.com | Tshwane mayor wants to build wall to separate clashing communities
Pretoria – Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga wants to build a wall to separate two communities, after battles erupted between Mamelodi home owners and residents of a neighbouring informal settlement.
The violence, which began on Wednesday evening and continued well into Thursday, saw the petrol bombing of several bond houses and more than 50 shacks.
In something reminiscent of the Berlin Wall or US President Trump’s idea of building a wall to separate the US and Mexico, Msimanga has suggested that a wall is needed between the warring community of Mahube Valley Extension One in Mamelodi, and residents of an informal settlement called Mountain View.
On Wednesday evening, clashes broke out between the two communities after a substation was damaged, allegedly caused by illegal electricity connections by residents of the informal settlement.
Many families from both communities have been left destitute and their belongings destroyed in the fires.
The mayor organised alternative accommodation for them and said a series of meetings would be held to solve the issues that these two communities were facing.
Tensions remained palpably volatile throughout Thursday, with residents making petrol bombs in plain sight during the afternoon. Police confiscated the already made Molotov cocktails and petrol stored in a plastic canister.
Msimanga addressed residents from both communities separately.
He pleaded with Mountain View residents to be patient, to avoid further violence, and stop making illegal connections.
He added that the informal settlement would be moved further away from the bond houses, and a buffer created to separate the two communities.
‘It is now an eye for an eye’
He told Mahube Valley residents that their electricity would be restored before they went to bed on Thursday evening, and that all illegal connections would be removed.
Msimanga said that informal dwellers could not be evicted immediately, but that a wall would be built to separate the two communities.
“The wall should be built as soon as possible,” said Msimanga.
Some Mahube Valley residents asked Msimanga to evict their neighbours immediately, and threatened to burn the entire informal settlement to the ground if this was not done.
“We have reached a point where it is now an eye for an eye,” one resident told Msimanga.
Homes, belongings destroyed
One resident, Florence Motise was home with her two children – a teenager, 16, and toddler, 3 – when someone threw a petrol bomb into her living room on Wednesday night. Her husband was at work at the time.
She narrowly escaped the inferno with her two kids, who are now traumatised.
The fire destroyed most of what they owned; the house is no longer liveable.
Motise said she was both angry and sad that everything they had worked for had been destroyed, and their lives were put in danger.
A resident from Mountain View, who didn’t want to be named, said his shack, with all his belongings, had also been destroyed after it was set alight on Wednesday night.
Another said that, while he was at work, his shack was petrol bombed, and that his newborn baby had died from smoke inhalation while his wife tried to find help. This has not been confirmed.
Both communities blame each other for being the initiators of Wednesday’s violence, with residents of Mahube Valley saying the informal dwellers were taking electricity and water illegally and leaving them with the bill.
Residents from both communities said they were unable to go to work as they needed to protect their families and homes.
Public order policing had been deployed to the area and would remain there until the situation between the two communities was resolved.

Health24.com | Sugar tax: Job losses far lower than projected by industry
National Treasury’s highly anticipated new socio-economic study on the impact of the sugar tax suggests that job losses could be about 16 times lower than the numbers projected by the beverage industry.
The results of the study were presented at a briefing of the Standing Committee on Finance and the Portfolio Committee on Health in Parliament on Wednesday.
A more aggressive formation strategy
It projects that job losses across the entire value chain could be as low as 1 475 but this is dependent on if the industry aggressively reformulates their products to contain roughly 35% less sugar.
Industry body, the Beverage Association of South Africa (BevSA) has publically committed to reformulate sugary drinks in the country to contain 15% less sugar by 2018. But the National Treasury suggests that, in the interests of saving jobs, a more aggressive formation strategy should be pursued.
At the end of May BevSA told Health-e News that they anticipate job losses in the region of 24 000.
But advocacy organisation Healthy Living Alliance’s Tracey Malawana said that industry could be using the tax as a “smokescreen” to justify already-planned job cuts. Healthy Living Alliance or Heala is an alliance of organisations advocating for the implantation of the sugary drinks tax.
Congress of South African Trade Union’s (Cosatu) Matthew Parks said that the entire sugar industry is in decline and 15 000 jobs have already been lost in the last few years.
Ball in court of beverage industry
On Wednesday Parks told members of parliament (MPs) that currently the local manufacturing industry sources 85% of its sugar from inside the country. He said, to protect jobs, 100% of sugar should be sourced locally and the tariff on imported sugar should be increased to facilitate this.
In addition, last month Coca Cola International’s new CEO, James Quincey announced that the company is planning to cut jobs globally due to outsourcing and technological advancements.
Health-e News approached BevSA to comment on these allegations and gave the Association two days to respond but they declined.
“This report affirms the tax as an instrument for reducing our consumption of sugary drinks and we are confident that our MPs will get this message,” said Malawana. “It also puts the ball firmly in the court of the beverage industry. Let them prove the sincerity of their concern about jobs by moving forward rapidly with reformulation and the production of lower sugar alternatives for the public.” – Health-e News
