News24.com | WATCH: Several dead as explosion strikes nursery in China
An explosion has struck a nursery in eastern China, with local government saying at least seven people have been killed. It is unclear if any children were part of the fatalities.
At least 59 people, including children, were injured.
The blast occurred as children were being picked up from the school in the city of Xuzhou in Jiangsu province on Thursday, police said.
Photos purportedly from the scene and posted to social media showed children and adults lying on the ground, some of them bleeding.
One woman is clutching her child, who is in tears. The force of the blast tore the clothes off some of the people lying on the ground.
It was not clear whether the explosion was an accident or was deliberately set.

The newspaper Xiandaikuaibao on its website cited an unidentified witness as saying the explosive appeared to have been a bottle of cooking gas.
Calls to the kindergarten and local hospitals rang unanswered, AP news agency reported.
An official at the police station in Fengxian county told AFP news agency that the explosion was under investigation.
It is the latest tragedy to strike a nursery in China in recent weeks.
A school bus packed with kindergarten pupils erupted in flames inside a tunnel in eastern Shandong province on May 9, killing 11 children, a teacher and the driver.
Officials later said the fire was intentionally set by the driver, who was angry at losing overtime wages.
News24.com | Mbalula tweets slam Magashule
Johannesburg – In a series of unexpected tweets, the official account of ANC NEC member Fikile Mbalula has trashed Free State Premier Ace Magashule as an option for the position of secretary general position, saying he would kill the party.
“Ace Magashule is a definite no no no, the man will finish what is remaining of our movement. He will kill it,” Mbalula tweeted.
In a series of tweets, Mbalula’s called for the ANC Youth League to mobilise for current ANC Gauteng deputy chairperson David Makhura to replace current secretary general Gwede Mantashe, who is expected to step down at the end of the year.
News24 understands that Mbalula’s account had not been hacked.
Mbalula’s comments are likely to put him on a collision course with the party’s youth league and the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association.
Both nominated Magashule for the secretary general position ahead of the December elective conference.
The two bodies also nominated Mbalula for the second deputy secretary general position. They will be lobbying for the conference to create the position for Mbalula.
Mbalula wrote that Makhura, who is also Gauteng premier, would make a good secretary general.
“IF somebody asked I’ll say David Makhura will make a good good secretary general for the ANC. #thinking beyond factions.”
“Makhura has all the ingredients you like in a good leader,” Mbalula tweeted.
Mbalula, who was defeated when he ran for secretary general position in Mangaung in 2012, said in his tweets that he was not party to any faction, but that Makhura was hardworking and honest.
The race towards the December elective conference is heating up, after the ANC said members could start discussing names. Official nominations only open in September.
Attempts to reach Mbalula were unsuccessful. His spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga told News24 he had not been able to contact the minister to verify if he had posted the tweets. “He is currently in a meeting,” said Mhaga.
His tweets were retweeted by the likes of NEC member Derek Hanekom.

Sport24.co.za | Mapoe in as Boks opt for consistency
Cape Town – Lionel Mapoe will replace Jesse Kriel at outside centre in the only change to the Springbok line-up for the second Test against France in Durban on Saturday (kick-off 17:05 SA time).
Springbok coach Allister Coetzee named an otherwise unchanged team on Thursday for the second encounter against Les Blues at Kings Park.
Mapoe returns to the Springbok starting line-up as replacement for Kriel, who is unavailable after he suffered a blow to the head last Saturday at Loftus Versfeld.
All five players who made their Test debuts last weekend – Andries Coetzee (fullback), Raymond Rhule (right wing), Courtnall Skosan (left wing), Ross Cronje (scrumhalf) and Dillyn Leyds (outside back) – were retained by Coetzee, who said he wanted to maintain continuity and build momentum.
“We kept changes to a minimum and one change to the squad means we can continue to work on our continuity, which is so important,” said Coetzee.
“This is a new group, so playing together again means that the important combinations are gaining more experience. It is also nice to reward good performances and all of them deserve another opportunity.”
Coetzee said the Springboks worked hard during training this week and called for improvements in all areas of their game, especially as the French are expected to be bolstered this week with the inclusion of several players from Clermont and Toulon, who were not available for the opening Test.
With Kriel not available for the Durban encounter, the Springbok coach explained that the decision to select Mapoe next to Serfontein was an easy one.
“Jan Serfontein had a very good match at inside centre in Pretoria and we wanted a specialist at No 13 as replacement for Jesse, so Mapoe is a logical choice. It also means we’re preventing making two changes to the team,” said Coetzee.
The Springbok coach reckons France will no doubt increase their physicality and effort in the second Test.
“The forward battle will always be a very important part of the game,” said Coetzee.
“We know we will be up against a very well prepared French team in the second Test and we are readying ourselves for that. They would like to bounce back and we would like to continue with our processes. Both teams have a lot to too play for.
“Although not perfect, I’m pleased with the set-pieces and expect a huge onslaught from the French in both areas. We created a number of scoring opportunities, which is a great positive, and hopefully our execution will be better this time.”
Earlier, France confirmed eight changes to their starting line-up.

eNCA | Markets fall after new mining charter is published
PRETORIA – A minimum of 30 percent of South African mining companies has to be in the hands of black partners.
Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane made the announcement on Thursday, at the launch of the new Mining Charter.
The minimum threshold of black ownership had been raised from 26 percent.
The department is yet to decide whether firms had to retain that structure permanently.
In addition, mining prospecting rights need to have a minimum of 50 percent plus one, while companies will be required to give eight percent of their shares to workers.
However, the Chamber of Mines condemned the announcement, repeating previous complaints over a lack of consultation.
The Mining Charter was introduced in 2002 to increase black ownership of the mining industry, which accounted for about seven percent of South Africa’s economic output.

The industry body snubbed a meeting with government, scheduled just an hour before Zwane’s press conference on Thursday, which it described as “highly suspicious.”
The Chamber took government to court over the interpretation of ownership rules, a case that was yet to be heard.
Zwane said companies had 12 months to comply with the 30 percent target.
The government said companies must stick to black ownership targets even if black shareholders sell their stakes.
Uncertainty about government policy remained, however, as Zwane said “we have not dealt with that” issue.
It comes as the minister was under the spotlight after being implicated in the so-called #GuptaLeaks saga.
South Africa is the world’s top platinum producer, and the Chamber of Mines warned that onerous rules about ownership and participation will hurt investment.
The markets reacted to the announcement with shock.
The rand was down by two percent on the news, while mining firms lost around R30-billion.
By 13:00 CAT on Thursday, the resources index had fallen by 1.75 percent.
Sibanye was down by around 6.8 percent, Kumba Iron Ore was down by 6.4 percent and Assore by 5.85 percent.
