eNCA | Whole of Knysna not being vacated, but systems in place for mass evacuation: WC Disaster Management
CAPE TOWN – There had been no calls for a mass evacuation of Knysna where a fire was raging out of control, the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre (WDMC) clarified on Wednesday night
“While some areas in the town have already been evacuated, there is currently no call for mass evacuation of the entire Knysna,” a statement from the WCMD said.
By 11pm on Wednesday night, the areas of Brenton, Belvedere, Welbedacht, Nania, Eastford, Green Pastures and Knysna Heights had been evacuated.
“The officials on the ground are monitoring the situation and will inform locals timeously if and when additional evacuations become necessary. The officials on site will not hesitate to take every action required to keep citizens safe, the statement said.
“Evacuees are being taken to the Loerie Park area in town. There is shelter in that area. Further arrangements will be made when and if needed.”
Go George public buses were activated to provide mass transport services. At least 15 buses had been deployed to Knysna by 11pm.
The City of Cape on Wednesday night said its staff had been activated and would drive through the night to reach Knysna to assist the town’s firefighters. The City was deploying 27 firefighters, four bush fire tenders, two skid units, one major pump and a fire tender to the area.
Firefighters from surrounding towns were also deployed, while two fire trucks from the Overberg district were sent to the area. Twelve additional Working on Fire teams are expected in Knysna.
Aerial support had however been ruled out.
“Conditions include strong wind and lots of smoke which makes helicopter use not possible at present.”
The WCDM appealed to the public to rely on “established information channels” and urged people not to spread unconfirmed information as it could lead to panic.
“Whilst there are communications challenges, the town has established alternative communications measures to communicate with citizens.”

Sport24.co.za | Pakistan stun Proteas in rain affected encounter
Cape Town – Pakistan threw Pool B of the ICC Champions Trophy wide open when they beat the Proteas by 19 runs on the DLS method in a rain-shortened match at Edgbaston on Wednesday evening.
As it happened: Proteas v Pakistan
The Proteas and Pakistan now have two points each after two matches and there is the possibility of all four teams being locked on two points if Sri Lanka beat India in their next match.
The Proteas, who won the toss, struggled in their innings to post a total of 219 thanks largely to an unbeaten knock of 75 (104 balls, 1 four and 3 sixes) by David Miller and the support he received down the order from Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada that resulted in stands of 47 and 48 for the seventh and eighth wicket respectively.
The only other stand of note was the 40 that Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock posted in their opening stand.
Hasan Ali took 3/24 in 8 overs, including only 6 runs in the final over, for Pakistan while the left-arm spinner, Imad Wasim, took 2/20 in 8 with his victims being the key wickets of Amla and AB de Villiers, who was dismissed first ball.
Pakistan made a comfortable reply and had reached 119/3 in their response before rain stopped play in spite of Morne Morkel taking a superb 3/18 in seven overs. It was enough to keep Pakistan comfortably ahead on the DLS method when the match was called off.

Statement from provincial department on schools opening on Thursday:
Schools across the Western Cape will reopen tomorrow (Thursday, 8 June), following the severe storm that struck the province on Tuesday night.
The department decided to close schools today (Wednesday, 7 June) after receiving information on the severity of the storm from Western Cape Disaster Management Centre and the South African Weather Services.
We understand that the storm will abate overnight. There is no truth in rumours that schools would remain closed until the end of the week. There may be exceptions at certain schools that have been severely damaged by the storm.
Our district directors will liaise with the principals on contingency plans for these schools. A total of 22 schools reported damage by 14h00 today (Wednesday, 7 June). The department expects to receive further reports as schools mop up on Thursday.
Most of the damage has been to roofs, fallen trees and broken fences. Schools are reporting storm damage to our Safe Schools Call Centre. It is too early to assess the costs involved.
Our infrastructure staff will work with schools and the Department of Transport and Public Works to assess damages. The WCED decided to close school today as a precautionary measure on the advice of Disaster Management and the Weather Services. Our primary concern has been the safety of learners and staff.
The damage to certain schools suggests good reason for this concern. In addition, those who commute to school may have been at risk, especially in rural areas. The decision to close schools today has disrupted school programmes.
We deeply appreciate the understanding of parents, principals and teachers, and their willingness to work with our officials in meeting these challenges positively.
Disciplined Miller rescues SA’s innings

South Africa’s hopes of nailing down a place in the Champions Trophy semi-finals took a dive in their match against Pakistan at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Wednesday.
AB de Villiers’ team crashed to a total of 219/8 and will now have to depend on their bowling and fielding to avoid their last group game‚ against India at The Oval in London on Saturday‚ becoming a crunch clash.
South Africa’s score was rescued from a fate worse than its eventual mediocrity by David Miller‚ who took guard in the 15th over at 61/3 and batted through six partnerships for his unbeaten 75.
Miller curbed his trademark aggression impressively and grafted hard for his runs‚ facing 104 balls and hitting a solitary four and three sixes.
De Villiers won the toss and chose to bat despite a forecast for showers from 8pm (UK time)‚ and Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla made a slow but steady start to the innings.
But‚ with 40 runs on the board in the ninth over‚ Amla walked across his stumps to slow left-armer Imad Wasim and was trapped in front for 16.
That was the start of a slide that claimed six wickets for 78 runs in 20.4 overs.
Graeme Smith‚ the former South Africa captain who is commentating on the tournament on television‚ was due to give a batting masterclass for spectators during the supper break.
Perhaps some of South Africa’s current players should attend.
De Villiers‚ who got out for four to a splayed-footed hoik to cover against Sri Lanka at The Oval on Saturday‚ failed again.
This time he reached for a wide delivery‚ which was bowled by Imad‚ and spooned a catch to point to suffer the only first-ball dismissal in his 212 innings in this format.
Hasan Ali‚ who took 3/24‚ began a raid of 3/10 in his first four overs when South Africa’s bolthole batsman‚ Faf du Plessis‚ dragged the fast bowler’s second delivery onto his stumps.
Hasan then removed JP Duminy‚ who drove footlessly and edged to slip‚ and Wayne Parnell‚ whose off stump was set askew by an away swinger‚ with consecutive deliveries. Miller and Chris Morris kept the Pakistanis at bay in a stand of 47 that survived Miller being poleaxed by a yorker from Mohammad Amir and being given out leg-before for 47 — Miller referred the decision and the ball was shown to be missing leg — and Morris being cleanbowled for 22 by Junaid Khan with what was correctly called a no-ball.
Junaid ended the partnership legitimately in the 43rd over when he had caught Morris caught in the deep for 28.
That brought Kagiso Rabada to the crease to share a stand of 48‚ the biggest of the innings.
It was snuffed out by a fine running‚ diving catch by Hasan deep in the covers to dismiss Rabada for 26‚ his highest score in his 14 one-day innings.

How to start a motorcycling accessories business
You’ve probably seen lots of motorcycling shows and lots of bikers, in their complete motorcycle outfits spiced up with their unique looking biker jewellery – giving them a bold and independent look and also depicting their biker lifestyle.
The motorcycling accessories business is one you’ll really enjoy venturing into because, for most bikers, motorcycling becomes very addictive (which is a great advantage to the business you’re about to start because it means they’ll keep coming back for what you sell), it gives off a speed appeal, it’s a cheaper means of transportation and also a fun way bikers get to clear their heads.
You must have figured that it won’t be as easy as it seems. Starting a business of any kind is never easy anyway. It’s a journey that will require a lot of your time, hard work and effort.
If you’re really ready to start a motorcycling accessories business, here are the things you need to do:
1. Get a business plan
The first and most important step to take is to form a detailed business plan, one that succinctly explains the goals you intend to achieve and how you intend on achieving those goals.
It should include objectives of the business, budget, time frame, location, etc. It is with this business plan you will be able to source for finance if you aren’t capable of raising the capital.
2. Do proper research
You’re about to venture into a business not everyone is interested in, so it’s best you do your findings on how the business should run.
You can check out various motorcycling accessories businesses, like Bikerringshop, that sell jewellery and accessories for bikers. Check them out and see what they do.
Study the successful ones and work on what makes them successful.
3. Select and register a unique name for the motorcycling accessories business
Everything about motorcycling is unique. You most definitely would have noticed the way the motorcycling outfits, biker jewellery, skull rings, etc make the bikers look: it gives them a confident and rebellious aura, something so unique, so different yet so special.
So, get a very unique business name too: something that matches the biker lifestyle. When you find that special name, get it registered so you don’t have to worry about somebody else making a living off your business’ name.
4. Find the appropriate location
You want to start a motorcycling accessories business, you should be very strategic about the business location.
The business should be located in a very busy location, somewhere very open, open enough to be noticed by both bikers and aspiring bikers.
5. Hire industry experts
With the help of industry experts you’ll be surprised at how much progress you’ll be making in a short while.
These experts will most definitely have connections to some of the top bikers in your surroundings. It is this connection that will be your link to more customers.
It doesn’t end there. With their expertise and years of experience, they will be able to tell you what bikers really need. Their recommendations will most likely help you change the motorcycling experience of your biker customers from good to exciting.
This will in turn attract more bikers, and you know by now that the more the customers, the merrier it gets.
Starting a motorcycling accessories business is something you’ll really enjoy venturing into. Ensure to follow the steps above, and who knows, you just might be the next most popular motorcycling accessories entrepreneur.
