Phungwayo confident Pirates will not concede six goals again under coach Jonevret
The Buccaneers have conceded six goals twice in 2016-17 – in a 6-1 defeat against SuperSport United in November and a record 6-0 against Mamelodi Sundowns in February.
Those results were the shock to the system that have led to the demise of Jonevret’s two predecessors‚ Muhsin Ertugral and Augusto Palacios‚ and a chronic loss of confidence at Pirates that saw them plunge into the bottom half.
Jonevret has lost one game in eight‚ with three wins and four draws.
Two of the victories have come in the Nedbank Cup‚ where they are into the quarterfinals to meet Bloemfontein Celtic.
For a side that had gone 12 league games without a win‚ it’s an improvement with defensive structure the most notable area that Bucs have worked on.
“Now‚ if you look at our system and the way we play‚ it’s more about stability and being a unit‚” Phungwayo‚ who has generally been Jonevret’s preferred choice at left-back‚ said.
“And I think that’s what the coach wants to implement.
“It’s like‚ ‘Guys‚ once you are a unit no team can score‚ or it’s not going to be easy for them’.
“When we lost six‚ I don’t think we were that compact as a team.
“When we lost against SuperSport you could say it was a very different method that we used.
“But now I feel like we are fine with what the coach is implementing.
“And we’re trying to implement it now so that next season it’s going to be easy when we start playing.
“So‚ ja‚ we’re having fun.
“We’ve seen the hard side‚ of course‚ of the coach.
“Like anybody who comes with being fun‚ he wants you to appreciate it being fun.
“And I think we owe it to him‚ too‚ to deliver.
“The coach is not a person who is going to want to put us under pressure.
“But of course‚ as players we know what it means to play for Orlando Pirates‚ so we want to win games.”
Phungwayo said Jonevret has rallied his troops with a personable approach.
“The new coach is a very interesting person‚ very calm‚ he’s a good motivator.
“And as you can see the team is coming together OK so far.
“Since he came in we’ve only lost one game‚ and I think it’s getting there.
“And of course we’ve reached the next round of the Nedbank‚ so we want to end on a high.
“We’re excited about it.
“Because we’ve promised ourselves that we need to finish in the top eight.
“Pirates is a big team.
“We cannot be out of the top eight.
“We can’t afford that.”
Bucs next meet Celtic in their Nedbank quarter on Saturday.

Two Oceans‚ one winner – from Khayelitsha

Like 9 867 other South Africans‚ 351 from 20 other African countries‚ 225 Germans‚ 189 from the United Kingdom‚ 107 Netherlanders‚ 86 Americans‚ and one each from Spain‚ Norway‚ Argentina‚ Slovakia‚ Turkey‚ Lithuania‚ Luxembourg‚ Syria‚ Belarus‚ Bulgaria‚ Honduras‚ Thailand and Vietnam‚ Lungile Gongqa entered Saturday’s Two Oceans ultra-marathon.
Unlike all the others‚ Gongqa won.
Even less likely was that‚ of all those people from all those countries situated all those kilometres away‚ the champion was from a place 30 kilometres from both the start of the race in Main Road‚ Newlands and the finish at the University of Cape Town’s rugby field.
That place is Khayelitsha‚ or “new home”‚ a rough and ready‚ ramshackle product of apartheid’s evil city planning that boasts a gangster museum and rarely hits the headlines for good reasons.
Saturday was one of those rarities‚ what with Gongqa fighting off the challenge of Lesotho’s Warinyane Lebopo during the final stretches to win in 03:09:43.
That was only the last of his battles throughout the 56 kilometres of the race‚ and only the latest of his struggles in life.
Among the latter is a stubborn stammer that has led to Gongqa enlisting his wife‚ Ivy Gongqa‚ to speak on his behalf at press conferences.
Another was the disagreement he had with his coach‚ Hendrick Ramaala‚ at the Rio Olympics – where Gongqa crashed out of the marathon.
Along with becoming the first Khayelitshan to win the Two Oceans‚ Gongqa is also the first champion from Cape Town since 1973 and the first South African to triumph in the race since 2013.
Unlike Gongqa‚ Maryna Damantsevich had to travel 9 800 kilometres from Belarus to get to the start of the race.
But‚ like Gongqa‚ she also won – in this case the women’s race in 03:37:13.
Also unlike the men’s winner‚ she had a clear path to victory after the favourite and defending champion‚ Caroline Wöstmann‚ withdrew with a hamstring injury after 11 kilometres.
If only things were that simple …
“Someone bumped into me at the start and I fell a few times‚” Damantsevich said with the help of translation by her coach‚ Anatoliy Bychkov.
“I thought I was in second place but I couldn’t find the woman in front of me‚ so I ran faster to catch up.”
She was well ahead after 20 kilometres and won with more than 10 minutes to spare.
