Health24.com | Do I really need the flu shot?
The South African economy loses more than R2 billion every year, and the average person misses 4.5 days of school or work because of colds and flu.
Although the symptoms of colds and flu seem quite similar, they are actually quite different conditions.
The flu is a viral infection that causes respiratory tract infections, while a cold just causes a runny nose, nasal congestion and a sore throat.
Perhaps most characteristic of flu is the sudden onset of symptoms – in the morning you feel fine but by lunchtime you’re in bed feeling quite sick and running a fever.
The differences between a cold and flu
The World Health Organization estimates that flu causes between 250 000 and 500 000 deaths annually.
Safeguard yourself and family from catching the flu by practicing good personal hygiene and getting a simple vaccination.
Understanding the flu shot
Every year a new flu shot is formulated, as the flu virus mutates. “This is why we need a new vaccine every year,” explains Health24’s CyberDoc Heidi van Deventer. “We need to keep up with changing the flu vaccine.”
‘I had the flu shot but still got sick’
Sometimes it happens that you get the flu shot but still find yourself getting sick. “The virus that you have might not be the exact same version of the vaccine that you received,” explains Dr Van Deventer. “But it should give you some protection against becoming extremely ill.”
Dr Van Deventer says the best time to schedule your flu shot is in April before the flu season starts. The vaccines are usually available towards the end of March. “You don’t need a prescription and can have it done at most pharmacies,” she adds.
High-risk patients
If you fall into the category of pregnant women, the elderly, people who are seriously immune-compromised or children older than six months, then you should definitely schedule some time to get the flu vaccine.
“They are the more vulnerable groups in our population and their immune systems are not as strong as the rest of the population,” says Dr Van Deventer. “They are also prone to become severely ill when coming down with the flu and to develop serious complications such as pneumonia. I would also advise anyone working with children [teachers and daycare staff] and sick people [all health and admin personnel] to have the flu shot.”
Side effects
Although most people won’t experience any side effects, some do. You may experience mild flu symptoms (runny nose, slight fever, headache and nausea) but it should pass within a few days. The area where the flu shot was given might also become inflamed and painful.

News24.com | Jonas still has vital role to play in SA – DA
Cape Town – Former deputy minister of finance Mcebisi Jonas still has a vital role to play in South Africa, the DA’s David Maynier said on Thursday.
Jonas was fired from the finance ministry along with Minister Pravin Gordhan on Friday, and he later resigned from Parliament.
His resignation was confirmed on Thursday.
Maynier was referring to Jonas’ allegations against the controversial Gupta family, whom he said had offered him millions to take the finance minister job, which he had refused.
“Now nothing stands in the way of the former deputy minister co-operating with the investigation being carried out by the Hawks. He could be the star witness in what could amount to aiming a ‘political headshot’ at President Jacob Zuma,” Maynier said.
“We can only hope the former deputy minister will have the courage and energy to fight on against ‘state capture’ in South Africa.”
Former public protector Thuli Madonsela interviewed Jonas after he said the Gupta family offered him Nhlanhla Nene’s job as finance minister.
He told Madonsela the family offered him R600 000 in cash during a meeting at their Saxonwold, Johannesburg, residence.
Sport24.co.za | Two changes to Stormers starting XV
Cape Town – Stormers coach Robbie Fleck has made two changes to his starting line-up for their Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs at Newlands on Saturday (17:15 kick-off).
Scrumhalf Jano Vermaak has been ruled out after leaving the field with concussion in the 53-10 victory over Cheetahs at Newlands last week. He is replaced by the experienced Dewaldt Duvenage, with Justin Phillips providing cover on the bench.
The only change to the forward pack sees a fit-again Wilco Louw take his place at tighthead prop alongside hooker Bongi Mbonambi, who earns his 50th Super Rugby cap.
The changes amongst the replacements see Phillips and lock Jan de Klerk get an opportunity, whilst prop Frans Malherbe is also set to provide impact when called upon.
Fleck said that the players are looking forward to standing together with the Newlands faithful for what should be an intense match between two unbeaten sides.
“The players have all put in a lot of hard work and we cannot wait to test ourselves against the Chiefs this weekend,” Fleck said.
“There should be an incredible atmosphere at Newlands on Saturday, so we are very excited about what lies ahead.”

News24.com | #SAunites LIVE: Gordhan arrives at Kathrada memorial
Standing ovation for Gordhan’s arrival at Kathrada memorial
(By Jenni Evans, News24)
Old lefties, child activists, grannies, politicians and ordinary Capetonians gave former finance minister Pravin Gordhan a standing ovation as he arrived for ANC veteran Ahmed Kathrada’s memorial service in Cape Town on Thursday.
Fresh from his sacking by President Jacob Zuma last Friday, Gordhan’s arrival sparked cheers among people at the memorial.
As he walked in, he got a huge round of applause and people broke into song.
Kathrada’s death appears to have galvanised a movement for Zuma to step down, and this was reflected in posters at the memorial, where people also reflect anger over the recent ratings downgrades by Standard and Poor’s (S&P).
“Ahmed up my mind”, read one, and “Downgrade Zuma to #Junkstatus” read another.
There was very little political insignia.
A few people arrived in African National Congress, SA Communist Party and Pan Africanist Congress T-shirts.
Filled to capacity
But most of the T-shirts were from local protest campaigns for proper toilets, education, freedom of information and against gender violence. HIV/Aids activists were also present, joining the schoolchildren’s shrill singing of old anti-apartheid struggle songs usually associated with their elders.
Former tourism minister Derek Hanekom walked in to the cathedral with Gordhan.
He was also fired in President Jacob Zuma’s Cabinet reshuffle.
The cathedral had filled up so early ahead of the scheduled 14:00 start, that people were asked to be quiet during the unrelated Lenten Eucharist.
By the time it started there was no room inside and crowds spilled into Wale Street. A handful of traffic officers kept an eye on people.
