Jayiya scores hat-trick as Cape Town City thrash Chippa United

Jayiya, who also got a hat trick last season in the colours of Mpumalanga Black Aces, scored the opener in the sixth minute, got a second six minutes later and by the 16th minute had completed his hat trick to set City on their way to an important three point haul.
It took 10 minutes from his first to his third goal, as the pace of the home attack mesmerised the visitors, left bewildered by the quick movement of the City players.
Thamsanqa Mkhize added a fourth on the stroke of half-time for his first goal in City colours while Chippa pulled one back some 15 minutes from time through Rhulani Manzini.
City now lead Bidvest Wits by one peint although they have played two matches more.
Jayiya outmuscled Paseka Mako on the right of the attack to surge down on goal and hammer home a right footed finish to start the rout with the game barely underway.
His second came as the result of quick anticipation as he got a touch to Lebogang Manyama’s cross and he competed the trio of goals with a diving header in a scramble on the line after his initial effort was saved.
Under fire Chippa goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi made a brilliant stop to deny Manyama just past the half hour mark but had no chance as Mkhize finished from close range in stoppage time at the end of the first half.
City took their foot off the pedal after the break but Chippa’s possession-based play was far too predictable and easy to defend as City used the second half almost as a training practice.
Rhulani Manzini did pull one back with a toe poke in the 76th minute and Andile Mbenyane hit the post soon after but all Chippa got was a small measure of consolation. They stay down in 10th place in the standings.
One set back for City was the caution picked up after just five minutes by Roland Putsche, now suspended for their next match, coupled with a groin injury for fellow defensive midfielder Mpho Matsi, who went off after just 19 minutes. – TMG Digital
News24.com | Recommendations made for 2 crucial judicial positions
Midrand – Commissioner Thoko Didiza and Carel Fourie of the JSC announced their recommendations for two crucial judicial positions on Monday night at the office of the Chief Justice in Midrand, Johannesburg.
The interviews which were conducted by the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) began on Monday and took just over nine hours to finalise, with the Commission hearing from two potential candidates who had both been nominated by President Jacob Zuma.
The Commission deliberated and finally recommended Raymond Zondo for the position of Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court. Mandisa Maya was recommended for the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA).
Maya – who became a judge at the age of 35 – is also the first female Deputy-President of the SCA. If appointed following the recommendation, she will become the first female head of the appellate division (AD). She described herself as able and competent, experienced, independent-minded and a person who abided by the Constitution.
Zondo was described as ‘well-qualified and experienced’ having handed down a whopping 15 judgments in 2016. Zondo was appointed Judge President of the Labour Court and the Labour Appeal Court in 2000. He has since made efforts towards advancing gender transformation in both courts, as well advancing the rights of workers in some of his judgments.
Both candidates were described as suitable. The final decision on whether the candidates may fill the vacancies lies with Zuma.
Both nominees were quizzed on their role in transforming the legal sphere and developing the country using their judgments, their thoughts on how the legal system could be more inclusive of women, and the importance of South African languages and customary law.
Commissioner Didiza was also announced as the co-spokesperson of the Commission.
“I wish to congratulate her and wish her well,” said Fourie.
Fourie also thanked Dumisa Ntsebeza SC for a “job well done”.
News24.com | Couple kidnapped, stoned, set alight after minibus crash
Johannesburg – A couple involved in an accident with a minibus taxi were kidnapped, the woman was raped, before they were both pelted with stones and set alight, a taxi association said on Monday.
The couple’s car was struck by a speeding minibus taxi on Impala Road, Krugersdorp, in the early hours of Saturday, Dorljota spokesperson Danile Maedi said.
“A group of men then loaded the couple into the car, pretending to take them to hospital. They stopped at an open veld and then raped the woman in front of her man.”
Their assailants threw stones at them and set them alight.
The woman died on Sunday and the man on Monday.
Eight people, including a minibus driver, were arrested.
The association would help pay for the funeral costs and provide transport for mourners on the day of the funeral, he said.
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela had no information about the crime.
Sport24.co.za | 5 things to watch for at the 81st Masters
Augusta – Here are five things to watch for at the 81st Masters which begins on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
1. Can Dustin Johnson keep his hot streak going?
The world No 1, who captured his first major title at last year’s US Open at Oakmont, has won three events in a row, winning at Riviera in February and last month at the WGC Mexico and Match Play events.
He took last week off to rest and recover. With his power off the tee, he figures to contend again at Augusta National this week.
2. Can Rory McIlroy complete the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters?
The four-time major champion from Northern Ireland, who claimed his third leg of the feat at the 2014 British Open, was fourth in 2015 and shared 10th last year in his first two tries at finishing off at least one win in each major.
It’s a feat only five players have accomplished – Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Gary Player. Of that group, only Sarazen did it by winning the Masters last, becoming in 1935 the first to sweep the US and British Opens, the Masters and the PGA Championship.
McIlroy has admitted it becomes harder the longer it takes.
3. Can Jordan Spieth contend again for the green jacket after a back-nine Sunday meltdown last year while leading?
Back-to-back bogeys to start the back nine followed by a double splashdown quadruple bogey at the par-3 12th doomed Spieth on the brink of defending his title.
He has practiced those holes, particularly the 12th, time and again since then. But how he handles them in competition this week will be a focus, especially if he is leading or in the hunt for a green jacket come Sunday.
4. Can another first-time major winner stretch the win streak of such players to six in a row?
Starting with Australian Jason Day’s victory in the 2015 PGA Championship, the past five men’s majors have been captured by first-time major winners.
Last year’s list included England’s Danny Willett at the Masters, American Dustin Johnson at the US Open, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson at the British Open and American Jimmy Walker at the 2016 PGA.
This is the longest run since first-timers won nine in a row starting with Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell at the 2010 US Open and ending with American Webb Simpson at the 2012 US Open, a stretch that included the first major wins for Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson.
5. How will Arnold Palmer be remembered at the first Masters, and first men’s major, since his death?
Palmer died last September at age 87 but his golf legacy could last forever as the 1960s star was a pioneer who brought television and sponsor interest like none before him.
Palmer won seven major titles, four of them at the Masters, and had served as an honorary starter at Augusta National with fellow legends Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.
