4 February 2021 – SARS Customs make a massive rhino horn bust worth R53-million

February 4, 2021, Pretoria – The Customs unit of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) made a bust of rhino horn with an estimated value of R53 172 000, in a shipment destined for Malaysia.

While conducting manifest profiling at the courier facilities, the Customs Detector Dog Unit at O.R.Tambo International Airport selected a suspicious shipment declared as ‘HP Cartridges Developers’.

The three-piece shipment was taken to the X-ray scanner for non-intrusive inspection, where the image analysis reflected objects resembling the shape of rhino horns.  The shipment was taken for physical inspection and upon inspection of the boxes, 18 pieces of rhino horn were found concealed in traditional clothing. The goods weighed 63kg. 

This is the fourth rhino horn bust by SARS Customs at the O.R.Tambo International Airport between July 2020 and February 2021. The overall weight of the rhino horn seized in these four cases is 277.30 kg with an estimated value of R 234 114 206.

The Customs officers immediately called the Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) to the scene who confiscated the shipment for further investigation.

In his reaction to this massive seizure of the rhino horn, Commissioner Edward Kieswetter congratulated the Customs officers for their excellent work.

He warned the perpetrators of crime that SARS, working with other law enforcement agencies, would spare no efforts in confronting and dealing decisively with any criminal malfeasance. Those that are involved in such egregious and merciless killing of rhinoceros and mutilating them will be brought to book.

He furthermore said, “Those that are determined to destroy the rich natural endowment of our country, which is a common treasure and heritage for all, that we should look after for future generations, will be met with unwavering commitment of our officers to enforce the law.”

  • Six people were travelling in a car when they were ordered out and shot, one survived, while five died.
  • A 23-year-old man was arrested in Tshelimnyama and found in possession of one of the victims’ cellphones.
  • He will make his second appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on 12 February. 

23-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man has been arrested in connection with the murder of six people who were shot and killed while travelling in their car in KwaNdengezi in September last year.  

Sibongakonke Zondi made his first appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after he was arrested by the provincial Organised Crime Unit. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of stolen property.

On the evening of 26 September, Nkanyiso Mthembu, Lwa Zamisa, Wanda Ncgobo, Mxolisi Phungula and Jabulisile Shabalala were travelling in a car in Snethemba when a group of men ordered them out, and shot and killed them execution-style.

“The suspects allegedly indiscriminately opened fire on them. Police found five of the victims dead near the vehicle and established that one of the victims was seriously injured and transported to the hospital,” said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker. 

Naicker added the 23-year-old was found in possession of one of the victims’ cellphones and that detective’s expected more arrests. 

The Witness reported at the time that shortly after the incident, as well as the shooting of four other people in Snethemba, Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the area.

He said: “These things should not be allowed to happen. It should not be allowed to get as wayward as it has in KwaZulu-Natal. These killings of the nine people are serious.”  

The accused will be back in court on 12 February.

South Africa head coach Mark Boucher said Wednesday that Quinton de Kock will not remain as Test captain once the ongoing Pakistan tour concludes.

The 28-year-old was appointed on a temporary basis in October last year until a permanent candidate could be found.

“When we get back we’ve got a bit of time before our next Test series so we can sit down and make a good, solid call on who can take over from him and release him from that burden,” Boucher said in a virtual press conference ahead of the second Test against Pakistan which starts in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

“We will try and get the best out of him.”

South Africa have found it hard to appoint a Test captain after the retirement of AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla and once Faf du Plessis stepped down from captaincy in February last year.

De Kock, who skippers in all three formats, led South Africa to 2-0 win in a home series over Sri Lanka before losing the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi last month.

“It’s been tough on Quinny. If you’re not scoring runs it gets highlighted, especially if you’re a captain,” added Boucher.

“We’re not that harsh on Quinny in this environment. We know that he’s a quality player and there’s a good innings around the corner for him.

“He has been given the extra burden of being captain and that can be tough and something he’s not used to.”

South Africa can wait on the replacement of De Kock as captain as their home series against Australia next month was cancelled by Cricket Australia over the coronavirus pandemic earlier this week.
