Stormers coach John Dobson has warned his charges would need a full “pre-season” before a return to action.

Rugby has been suspended since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic and the Stormers mentor said the longer than expected break posed a practical problem in terms of conditioning.
“When we started this lockdown, we were looking at three weeks and then getting back to work. There was a formula of two to one, so if you were off for two weeks it would take one to get you ready to play again, and now I think that has been dramatically extended. We’ve now had a full off-season, so we’ll need a full pre-season,” Dobson told reporters in a virtual meeting earlier this week.
“We were keeping the players on a short readiness, now we’re pulling them right back to look at more muscular-skeletal and long-term strength. We can speculate as much as we like, but with the length of the whole thing and the prognosis in South Africa, we’re going to have to have a full pre-season before we’re physically ready to play again.”
New Zealand earlier this week announced they would return to rugby on June 13 with their own domestic event called Super Rugby Aotearoa, while there are talks of a similar competition in Australia.
With South Africa still in lockdown level 4 it remains unclear when rugby in the country will be allowed to resume and Dobson said playing a local Super Rugby event as well as the Currie Cup later in the years could prove problematic.
“There was a strong argument that we’d have to play Super Rugby because of the commercial rights around that, but the way we’re going, it’s hard to see us starting before, I think, even July. Then we’d still have to squeeze a Currie Cup in? I think it’s looking more like it’s going to be a big Currie Cup going late in the year,” Dobson concluded.

As Covid-19 sweeps across the globe, and the number of cases in South Africa grows on a daily basis, we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of an effective vaccine.
Health24 recently published an article explaining why clinical trials are key to ensure the safety of any medication, and why it may still be a while before we have a Covid-19 vaccine.
Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospitals are experiencing first hand the challenges surrounding the development of a new vaccine.
Vaccines, pathogens and the immune system
The National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor and the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital are currently in the process of developing a coronavirus vaccine.
The key goal of a vaccine is to trigger an immune response that will fight off a virus, but still be safe enough not to make the person sick. This is true for all vaccines, but the end product is different for each pathogen.
According to Dr Maria Elena Bottazzi, vaccine development is a balancing act between design and the immune response.
“As we proceed with the designing and testing of vaccine candidates, we felt the need to collaborate with a clinical immunologist, who also is engaged in basic and translational research, so that together we can inform our vaccine development efforts and ensure we evaluate both the protective mechanisms and avoid inducing any undesirable immunological responses that have been associated with some respiratory viruses,” she stated in a news report.
Bottazzi and fellow researcher Dr Peter Hotex approached Baylor’s pulmonologist Dr David Corry – professor of immunology, allergy and rheumatology and Fulbright Endowed Chair in Pathology in the Department of Pathology and Immunology – to collaborate.
Their research outcomes are published in the journal Nature Reviews Immunology, where an analysis of the vaccine development strategy can be read.
How does a vaccine protect against Covid-19?
While there is still a lot to be researched about SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, researchers now know that our bodies are most likely protected from the virus by a robust antibody response with a neutralising capacity.
We also need an immune response where the release of cytokines is balanced, as to not cause illness.
Previous studies have shown that it might be possible to develop protective antibodies.
“We are encouraged by the evidence supporting the likelihood that immunising against the spike protein’s receptor-binding domain represents a realistic and viable vaccination strategy. However, many questions remain,” said Dr Hotez in a statement.
“Studying the immunological responses triggered in people infected by the virus is one way researchers can select what viral components or antigens are promising candidates to use when designing the vaccine,” Bottazzi said. “That, coupled with studies using laboratory models of disease, is how scientists attempt to predict what are the ideal mechanisms of protection triggered by vaccines,” he remarked.
What could go wrong?
As a vaccine’s main goal is to trigger an immune response without harming the body, the researchers have looked at the effects of their previous developments in two ways – how a vaccine influences the immune system and what it does to the cells.
According to the news release, experimental and pre-clinical observations in earlier vaccine attempts against respiratory viruses showed that some of the formulations may trigger negative responses by the immune system.
Pre-clinical testing also showed that there could be tissue damage caused by cellular infiltrates after an immune response.
“Some experimental animals developed an inflammatory response in the lung or liver characterised by significant infiltration of immune cells – lymphocytes, monocytes and eosinophils,” Corry said. “Our literature search suggests that this cellular infiltration can be associated with IL-6, a cytokine or immune protein that is strongly increased in patients with Covid-19 who experience a cytokine storm, an excessive production of cytokines that can be life-threatening.”
There might also be undesirable responses from antibodies. While this has happened with other viruses, Bottazzi and team haven’t observed it in their vaccines: “We have not found any evidence that our vaccine triggers antibody-dependent enhancement in laboratory pre-clinical experiments. Experimental evidence suggests that our vaccine against the receptor-binding domain leads to the neutralisation of the virus,” Bottazzi said.
“Pre-clinical studies, performed with our partners at the University of Texas Medical Branch, show that the receptor binding domain on alum is indeed a promising vaccine candidate. It can trigger an immune response that is protective and does not induce undesirable cellular immune responses. We are working to advance this approach into the clinic for phase 1 studies,” Bottazzi added.
Time needed to find the right vaccine
While vaccine development has always been challenging, scientists are collaborating like never before, according to the research team.
“We believe that we need to have many vaccine candidates, platforms and trials, so we can evaluate as many vaccine options as possible to select the ones that are the most appropriate and prove to be the most effective and safe,” said Hotez.
“We invested almost a decade of research to maximise immune protection and minimise or prevent immune enhancement. Ultimately our goal is that these vaccines are made for the global population, accessible and affordable to all.”

SA to move to Level 3 by the end of May – but Ramaphosa, warns that greater vigilance will be needed as regulations are relaxed
President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that there will be a further easing of the lockdown and an increase in economic activity, and the country plans to move to Level 3 at the end of May.
Ramaphosa warned that more relaxations will come with a greater risk, as more people interact with one another, and greater vigilance will be required.
The new level will allow for a wider opening of the economy, but the government first has to meet with stakeholders in high risk areas to discuss the way forward.
The government will in due course announce further relaxations of Level 4 regulations, Ramaphosa said.
The President was addressing the nation as it entered the seventh week of an initially 21-day lockdown.
The government is adopting a risk-adjusted strategy when deciding on the extent of the lockdown.
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa announced that the number of cases has jumped to 12 074, while the number of Covid-19 deaths has hit 219.
More than nine million people have been screened by community screeners, and more than 300 000 tests have been done as of today, Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa reiterated that the lockdown has been necessary for curbing the spread of the virus, adding that about 80 000 people could have been infected by now, and the death toll would have been about eight times higher if there was no lockdown.
He said the positivity rate – that is, the percentage of people testing positive out of the number of total tests – is relatively low, likely because of the lockdown and other restrictions.
“Although the virus has slowed down, it is still among us and will be for a very long time,” Ramaphosa said. “Our success in overcoming the virus will lie in the changes we make.”
“Hugging, shaking of hands and kissing are things of the past. Physical distancing must be observed. As restrictions are eased, we will need to observe social distancing even more stringently.”
The President said schooling and the work environment will also have to adapt.
Ramaphosa said there are more than 25 000 additional beds for quarantine across the country, and the government is making strides in procuring protective gear and supplies for medical staff.
The President said the government’s unemployment scheme has paid out some R11 billion to about two million workers.
He said about three million South Africans have applied for the government’s R350 social relief grant.
He reminded the public of the importance of practising good hygiene. Ramaphosa warned that lifting the lockdown too soon would end up in an outbreak.
Ramaphosa, said, meanwhile, that there has been an increase in gender-based violence during the lockdown. He said the regulations allowed for a woman to leave her home to report any acts of violence without fearing getting a fine.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has conceded that some action government has taken in its effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus has been unclear, contradictory and poorly explained.
In an address to the nation on Wednesday evening, Ramaphosa committed to make amends and correct mistakes made by government during the seven-week lockdown.
“And that is why we must acknowledge that as we have confronted this unprecedented challenge, there may have been times when we have fallen short of your expectations.
“Some of the actions we have taken have been unclear, some have been contradictory and some have been poorly explained and some have evoked a lot of anger and opposition in many of you.”
He said government implementation had sometimes been slow and enforcement had sometimes been inconsistent and too harsh.
While acknowledging government’s shortcomings in its response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Ramaphosa also committed to, among other things, ensure that “all government decisions are taken in good faith, that they are reasonable and rational and based on empirical evidence, and that they do not cause much harm than good”.
“Where we have disappointed, we will continue to make amends. Where we make mistakes… as I said we are traversing uncharted territory. None of us have ever been through what we are going through now in the history of this country. We will make mistakes but I can assure you we will always seek to correct those mistakes,” he said.
Lack of transparency
The president announced that government was likely to ease the lockdown restrictions to Level 3 at the end of May – bar some areas with high infection rates.
He further said that 219 people had succumbed to this disease, with 12 074 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
“Since the imposing of the lockdown 48 days ago, government has been criticised for its decisions, lack of transparency in how decisions have been taken,” he said.
Ramaphosa expressed his commitments to change this, saying he will take the nation into confidence and be forthright on the state of the pandemic.
Ramaphosa further committed to continuing engaging and consulting the public as decisions are made.
One of the promises the president made to the public, was a commitment to ensure that the funds dedicated to South Africa’s coronavirus response were not wasted or stolen.
