Pain and sorrow were etched on the faces of residents when their shacks and brick houses were torn down by an army of Red Ants in the Kokotela informal settlement, Lawley, Ennerdale, in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Hundreds of Red Ants – who arrived in buses, trucks and vans – descended on the area to execute an order obtained by the City of Johannesburg, which says it is clamping down on illegal land invasions.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department, police and SA National Defence Force members monitored the demolition which left many people homeless.
The City accuses residents of illegally invading the land.
Among those left homeless was a woman who had built a seven-bedroom house.
She watched with tears running down her face as an excavator tore down her house.
It took the excavator less than a minute to destroy it.
It then moved on to one of the biggest brick houses in the area.
Without hesitation, the owner jumped into his car, which was parked outside, and sped off as he could not watch as his house was being demolished.
‘Today I am homeless’
The excavator then headed to France Botlhokwane’s brick house.
Botlhokwane, who stood next to his BMW as his house was torn down, said: “This is wrong. We miss Herman Mashaba. If he was still our mayor, these demolitions would not be happening.
“I have been here since last year and bought this land for R3 000. I have spent over R150 000 to build what was meant to be a house for my family. Today, I am homeless and myself, wife and children will spend the night inside our car.”
He said he was renting a shack in Lawley when he was persuaded to come to Kokotela and build a house.
He claimed: “We were never informed by Mayor Geoff Makhubo in advance that they were coming to destroy our homes. We are in a lockdown and I thought that my family would be safe indoors, now we are forced to live on the street,” added Botlhokwane.
His neighbour, David Molomo who also owns a BMW, simply drove his car out of his garage before his two-bedroom house, which has a garage, was demolished.
“What can we do? We are helpless and we don’t have a place to sleep tonight. We paid R3 000 to live here. Those who took our money must refund us.
“I don’t know where I am going spend the night. I can’t return back home in Mapetla Extension in Soweto. I have no place to sleep. I will have to make a plan where I am going to spend the night,” Molomo said.
Paul Malgas’ shack was also not spared.
Malgas arrived in Kokotela in October last year.
He claimed he had spent R3 000 to buy corrugated iron sheets to erect his shack.
Unemployed and homeless
“They destroyed my shack and they also took away my corrugated irons sheets. Where are they taking my things to? I pleaded with them to leave my property on the ground after destroying my shack and they refused.
“I am unemployed and homeless and I have no alternative place to stay during this lockdown. The government should have given us more time to remove our structures before they destroyed them,” said Malgas.
Mozambican national Carlos Chauke said he had been living in the area for three years, but he was one of the lucky ones since his shack was not destroyed.
Chauke said they relied on communal toilets and water taps.
“I knew that the police were coming. We have been living here for a long time. There were few shacks. Since last year, more people started arriving in the area to join us.
“Now, our homes are at risk because of them. Some of them bought parcels of land for R3 000 and above and those who sold the land have disappeared with their money. They are not here to negotiate with the police to stop the demolition,” said Chauke.
Makhubo’s spokesperson, Mlimandlela Ndamase, said the City was clamping down on land invasion.
“The City of Johannesburg has taken a decision to clamp down on the illegal invasion of land within the City. The City is observing a worrying trend in recent days, where criminal syndicates are using the national lockdown to invade open spaces and land.
Unlawful
“Individuals have been spotted in the Lawley area erecting structures illegally and the operation seeks to prevent this activity. Only vacant and half-built structures will be removed during this operation,” Ndamase said.
He urged residents to heed the warning and refrain from unlawful activities within the City.
“The City has directed the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and Group Forensics and Investigative Services to act swiftly to protect the assets of the City and private citizens for the greater interests of all citizens, including the poor and homeless.
“The City, working together with the provincial Department of Social Development, has made provision for homeless people across the City. Therefore, we will not tolerate unlawful invasions under the false pretence or narrative that people are homeless.
“The City is concerned that people are using this lockdown period to take advantage of the law by illegally invading land,” said Ndamase.
He also called on people to work with the City and adhere to the laws governing the country and not act in an unlawful manner that might result in the demolition of illegal structures and possible arrests.
“Joburg residents are reminded to observe the regulations and the lockdown pronounced by the president and accept that no illegal behavior will be tolerated during this period. Law enforcement will continue o be increased during this period and beyond,” Ndamase said.

Can zinc help shorten a coronavirus infection? Will vitamin C or other supplements prevent it?
These claims and plenty more can be found on social media and internet sites, but be advised: There is no pill or treatment that can prevent or cure Covid right now.
“We want to think that there is a quick way to get rid of this. But there is not a product out there that will keep you from getting the coronavirus,” said Rebecca Dutch, a virologist with the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
The pandemic has spawned a wave of products claiming to protect you by boosting your immune system – a simple claim people think they understand, said retired psychiatrist Dr Stephen Barrett, who runs Quackwatch, a website that debunks pseudoscientific claims.
Immune system is complex
“They think, ‘If I can boost my immune system, I’ll be more resistant to the virus,’ but it’s just not that simple,” he said.
“The immune system is quite complex,” Barrett explained. “There’s not even a scientific process called strengthening or boosting the immune system.”
He agreed with Dutch: “There is no product you can take that will prevent or cure Covid,” he said.
Even a group representing supplement makers agreed. Two major industry groups – the Council for Responsible Nutrition and the American Herbal Products Association – recently asked stores selling dietary supplements to refuse to stock or sell any products that claim to treat, cure or prevent Covid-19.
“We are not aware of any clinical research studies that demonstrate the efficacy of using a dietary supplement specifically to prevent or to treat Covid-19,” the trade groups said in a statement.
They said consumers should report such products to the US Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA has already sent warning letters to a number of companies selling fraudulent Covid-19 products. The agency also cautions that there are no approved preventatives or treatments for Covid-19.
Believing in magic?
Given the expert consensus, why are people still buying and trying these products?
Barrett said people “believe what they hear the most” and there’s no organised effort to set the record straight.
“There’s no economic incentive to say, ‘This doesn’t work,'” he said. “There’s no money to be made rebutting false claims.” But there’s a lot of money to be made promoting those false claims, so that’s what people tend to hear over and over, Barrett added.
People also tend to believe something works once they try it, he said. Say, for example, that you’ve recently had colds that lasted about a week. You try a supplement that says it will shorten a cold. If your next cold lasts four days, you’ll think the supplement worked. But most illnesses are self-limiting, Barrett said. It might just be that you caught a virus that tends to last only a few days this time.
Dr Philip Muskin, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, also points to the fear factor.
“People are scared and when you’re scared, your judgment may be impaired,” he said. “You just want a solution, and up comes a photo of a beautiful woman or man in a beautiful setting telling you that a certain herbal or vitamin supplement can help you.”
Even though you know it can’t be real, everyone wants to believe in magic, Muskin said.
Older adults more vulnerable
“Older adults are more often socially isolated and maybe a little lonelier, which opens them up to people who want to take advantage,” said Dr William Dale, director of the Center for Cancer and Aging at City of Hope in Los Angeles.
Older people also tend to be more trusting and use their phones more often than most, leaving them vulnerable to phone solicitations, he added.
If you suspect someone has tried to scam an older friend or relative, Dale recommends you ask them what they’ve been told, hear their concerns and then correct misinformation.
“Take them seriously. Don’t be dismissive. Take a kind approach. Remind people that right now, there are no cures for Covid. Try to reset the conversation,” he said.
One way to do this is by mentioning their medications. Ask if they have a good supply on hand or if they need to contact their doctor for refills. “Sometimes the easiest way is to have the conversation about medicines and then say, ‘Oh, this might interfere with your medication. You should ask your doctor if this is safe,'” Dale suggested.
What does help?
It also helps to remind older loved ones that people who don’t have Covid-19 symptoms can still transmit the disease and that physical distancing is important, Dale said.
All of the experts recommend washing your hands often – especially whenever you have been outdoors.
“Regular soap disrupts this virus,” Dutch said. “Any soap is OK, even if it’s not antibacterial. If you have access to a sink and soap, use that. Save your hand sanitiser to use when you’re out.”
Muskin and Dutch both emphasised the importance of staying healthy overall. Exercise, eat a balanced diet, get stress relief from things like meditation and do your best to get enough sleep.
Experts agree that it’s important to consider the source of any health information.
“We’re in an unprecedented time of ‘information’ coming in. Trying to decipher who is the best to listen to and sorting out what makes sense and what doesn’t is harder than ever,” Dale said.
Barrett recommends checking sources you know are reputable, such as the FDA, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and major universities’ websites.
South Africa’s epicentre – Gauteng now has 969 cases, six deaths and 479 recoveries.
The Western Cape has 675 cases, 13 deaths and 205 recoveries.KwaZulu-Natal has the highest number of fatalities at 20, with 539 cases and 96 recoveries.
The Eastern Cape recorded four deaths and Limpopo one – both provinces its first deaths.
There are 220 cases in the Eastern Cape and nine recoveries.In Limpopo, there are 26 cases and 18 recoveries.
The recovery rate in the Free State is 71 out of 98 infections. That province has four deaths.
The remaining provinces – North West, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape – have no deaths and 10, nine and six recoveries respectively.
The North West has 24 confirmed cases, Mpumalanga 22 and the Northern Cape 16.

RUNDOWN | Lockdown cannot be stopped abruptly
The big news coming out of the media briefing held by ministers in various departments is that the lockdown will not continue in its current form and that it will be “gradually lifted”.
“The lockdown cannot be stopped abruptly,” said Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
What’s more, government is working hard at work to review the “gradual reintroduction of goods and services”.
“We are seeking to avoid a rush of people all at once. We will be making announcements as we conclude and review,” said Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel.

South Africa hardly covered themselves in glory at the last edition of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, played on Indian soil in 2016.
Heard that one before? It is, of course, their unfortunate penchant at many multinational, white-ball jamborees.
The Proteas of the time were certainly no different: they flattered to deceive in winning two and losing two encounters in Group 1, to end third of the four teams in it and just fail to make the semi-final cut.
While beating Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, they played second fiddle to England and West Indies, both of whom progressed to the knockouts in a tournament eventually won, just a little against the odds, by the Caribbean outfit.
That SA side, under the leadership of Faf du Plessis, entered the event with a long-in-the-tooth look about it, and with most squad members’ strengths and shortcomings already well familiar to the foes they encountered.
Of the 15-strong group, an unhealthy nine of them (60 percent) were 30 or above: Du Plessis himself (31 at the time), Hashim Amla (32), Farhaan Behardien (32), AB de Villiers (32), JP Duminy (31), Imran Tahir (36), Aaron Phangiso (32), Dale Steyn (32) and David Wiese (30).
Falling into a slightly more youth-geared category were only the twentysomethings then: Kyle Abbott, Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada and Rilee Rossouw.
While a few veterans, some now particularly so, should still be in the picture for October’s scheduled next edition in Australia – assuming it does not fall prey to current coronavirus havoc – the Proteas will definitely be without several players who have either retired completely or are just no longer available for national purposes.
Into that bracket fall Amla, Behardien, Duminy, Abbott, Rossouw and Wiese (several on Kolpak contracts in the UK) and probably also Phangiso, who has not played at any level for the Proteas since early 2018.
That in itself will give the current SA brains trust, led by head coach Mark Boucher, the likelihood of a more agreeable balance between young players and seasoned pros when they name the squad for the 2020 T20 World Cup.
As much as there were broadly rosy signs of revival by South Africa at both T20 and one-day international level at the back end of an otherwise grim, just-ended 2019/20 summer, the Proteas were starting to infuse rookie talents to a sizeable extent.
While they were pipped 2-1 in successive T20 home series by two quality rivals, England and Australia, confirmation of the fact that their limited-overs cause was beginning to sort itself out again came through a 1-1 share of the ODI spoils with the English and then the curtain-closing, enormously heartening 3-0 drubbing of the Aussies in a further tussle in the 50-overs format.
In the period, Boucher and company gave either maiden or still fledgling-phase exposure to bright batting starlets like Janneman Malan (23), Kyle Verreynne (22) and gradually blossoming pace-bowling figures Anrich Nortje (26) and Lutho Sipamla (21).
It was also a period in which the clean and long-striking Heinrich Klaasen, also still comfortably inside the 30-mark, hugely re-announced himself, with a blistering late charge, as an international-calibre competitor.
Against that backdrop, it would perhaps not be the worst thing – even if it admittedly curtails further opportunity for amassing top-level wisdom – should the Proteas struggle to see much of their scheduled activity during the South African winter, while Covid-19 continues to make its cruel presence felt.
Not only would it leave them psychologically still emboldened in the spring by their regrowth strides at the tail-end of the last season, but also with a tidy, beneficial element of mystery around some of their newer faces … something they could not substantially boast in India at their humdrum 2016 T20 World Cup.
That, in turn, could be enough to see them handed a respect-laden, surprise-package rating status in the immediate lead-up to the Australian-staged tournament.
And wouldn’t you bank that, long-suffering Proteas fans?
