News24.com | Increase of 27 coronavirus cases may be ‘calm before a devastating storm’ – Mkhize
The number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in South Africa has risen to 1 380.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize revealed there were 27 new cases during a briefing on Wednesday evening.
Gauteng is leading the pack with 645 cases followed by the Western Cape (326), KwaZulu-Natal (186), the Free State (76), North West (9), Northern Cape (7), Eastern Cape (15), Mpumalanga (12), and 14 in Limpopo.
Mkhize said 44 220 people have been tested, adding the majority were tested at private laboratories.
“Even though the number seems high, it is very low compared to the number of challenges faced by South Africa.”
He raised concerns about the upcoming winter, saying some people might not know the difference between a common cold and Covid-19 symptoms.
Mkhize described the low number of infections as the “calm before the devastating storm” ahead of the upcoming flu season.
“This will flood our hospitals and clinics and create a fertile ground for the coronavirus to spread or to be masked in its presentation. This means with this small growth in numbers we may be experiencing the calm before the devastating storm.
“We need to be aware that there may not be many further warnings before the pounding descends…”

He added 67 mobile sampling and testing vehicles, which are equipped with laboratory equipment, would be dispatched to multiple provinces to undertake proactive testing to curb the pandemic from spreading further, especially in vulnerable areas.
Mkhize said the current testing capacity had been pushed to 5 000 tests in 24 hours.
Mobile laboratories are expected to increase the testing capacity to 30 000 tests in 24 hours.
“They will be used for rapid tests kits whenever they become available. They will be focusing on people tested in communities.”
Mkhize said case identification needed to be undertaken, and called on each province to start with its own strategies.

“About 993 priority wards have been identified that we need to focus on. That identification will be integrated by MECs in their hotspots of people who have been tested and their contacts. If we are focused, we can defeat Covid-19. There is a slow reduction of increase [in cases of Covid-19].
“We have now closed borders. The large numbers of infections were driven by people from countries infected. The lockdown has reduced the spread of the virus through large gatherings and overcrowded transport routes,” he added.
Mkhize called on the nation to remain alert and be more vigilant than ever before.
“Internal transmission has started and will have a tendency to spread silently. People with mild symptoms in poor areas may not seek assistance immediately.
“We need to tests hundreds of thousands of our population. People with access to private doctors have largely been tested.”
He said the current lockdown might leave people with limited access to public hospitals especially in poor communities because of transportation difficulties.
However, Mkhize added ending the lockdown would have rebounding effects on the country.
Sport24.co.za | Stormers taking it ‘day by day’ as cloud hangs over Super Rugby
Lloyd Burnard – Sport24
The future of Super Rugby 2020 is still uncertain, but Stormers coach John Dobson believes that most sides would need three weeks to prepare for a return to the playing field.
Register your interest for the British & Irish Lions tickets in South Africa 2021
As South Africa’s lockdown and fight against coronavirus ramps up, whether or not the rugby season gets back on track is obviously far from a priority at this time. But for Super Rugby coaches and players, it has presented a unique situation of having to think outside the box in an effort to stay as prepared as possible should the call come.
The one blessing from the Stormers’ perspective is that the break has given the likes of Siya Kolisi, Herschel Jantjies, JD Schickerling, Steven Kitshoff, Bongi Mbonambi and Pieter-Steph du Toit, who are all currently injured, time to recover without it hurting the team in the results column.
Dobson says that all of those players are on track in their recoveries, adding that Kolisi would definitely be available for selection in the unlikely event of the tournament resuming in just a month’s time.
“I can’t speak for other franchises, but I think you need around three weeks and that was the message from SA Rugby a few weeks ago,” Dobson said in an online press conference on Wednesday.
“The soonest we could be playing is in five weeks, so the middle of May would be the earliest, but that seems very tricky. We’re just living day by day.”
While the safety of the players is obviously most important for all sides in Super Rugby, the Stormers have implemented a remote training program that is rich in detail and has kept the players active in their own spaces.
“We screened them all when we left last Thursday. They’ve been in isolation since, but they do daily wellness reports and temperature reports with the doc,” Dobson explained.
“We’ve tried to remove the self-discipline element as much as we can. The players have got daily requirements, through an online app, to put their conditioning results in there and their weight, their sleep, their RPEs (rates of physical exertion) and they have to post videos of their conditioning.
“We’ve tailored individual programmes.
“The fitness stuff is daily reporting and then they’ve each got their own work-ons in terms of their technical skills and the coaches are sending out drills.”
While the onus is still very much on the players to do their own work, this program and the constant video communication has given the players an element of structure.
“They’re under enough stress without the self-discipline,” Dobson said.
“They’ve got technical projects like analysing our games, opposition games and world trends.
“They can rubbish us, but things like their body weight doesn’t lie. We’re pretty happy with how it’s going.”
SA Rugby is understood to be engaging in a meeting with key stakeholders on Friday to further explore the financial impacts of the coronavirus.
If Super Rugby does return in 2020, it will almost certainly do so behind closed doors.

But he had a warning for South Africans: the current situation may be just the calm before the storm.
Here are five important points:
1. Mkhize was speaking at the launch of 60 mobile clinic units, which will go out into communities to test people. Those units will be able to do a test in just 45 minutes. The minister said this was part of the government’s plan to be proactive, rather than reactive, and get a proper hold of the spread of the virus. He said, because the country’s testing plan has been “reactive” so far, we may not have a full picture of the extent of the spread of the virus. “Even though the number seems high, it is very low compared to the number of challenges faced by South Africa,” Mkhize warned.
2. He said there has been a “slower increase” in positive cases, which could be result of closing of the borders, he says. Enforcing quarantine of travellers is another. He says the lockdown has slowed the spread of local transmissions.
3. He said the plan was to increase the number of tests that could be done across the 10 laboratories in the country to increase to 5 000 per day by next week.
4. Mkhize said the Presidency will reach out to Cuba and China for “reinforcements” of medical staff to help fight the coronavirus.
5. Mkhize said the government envisioned that every town in the country would have earmarked a premises to house people suffering with Covid-19.
The death toll still stands at five.

Health24.com | Many approved drugs may hold promise against coronavirus
Two new studies each suggest that dozens of drugs already approved for use in the United States may prove effective against the new coronavirus.
“Repurposing these FDA-approved drugs could be a fast way to get treatment to patients who otherwise have no option,” explained the co-author of one of the studies, Dr Hesham Sadek. He’s professor in the departments of internal medicine, molecular biology and biophysics at UT Southwestern Medical Center, in Houston.
However, experts stressed that this research is still in its early stages, so people shouldn’t try any of the drugs now to prevent or treat Covid-19.
Right now, “there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new coronavirus,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “Some specific treatments are under investigation, and will be tested through clinical trials,” the WHO said, according to the Washington Post.
It could take months
As Covid-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, sickens hundreds of thousands worldwide, the race is on to find a drug that might help save severely ill patients.
But even with rapid government approval, it could take months to develop new drugs from scratch that might be effective against the virus, Sadek explained in a UT Southwestern news release.
That led his team to conduct computer modelling studies on certain drugs already approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, to assess their potential in combating the coronavirus.
The results showed that the most promising drugs include several antiviral drugs – including Darunavir, Nelfinavir, and Saquinavir – and several other types of drugs, including the ACE inhibitor Moexipril; the chemotherapy drugs Daunorubicin and Mitoxantrone; the painkiller Metamizole; the antihistamine Bepotastine; and the antimalarial drug Atovaquone.
Another promising candidate is the cholesterol-lowering statin rosuvastatin, which is sold under the brand name Crestor. It’s already taken by millions of patients around the world to lower their cholesterol, is safe, inexpensive and readily available, Sadek noted.
The results were published on a pre-print server called ChemRxiv; they have not yet been subject to peer review.
Findings submitted to journal
Also, because this study was completely computer-based, their effectiveness against the new coronavirus remains theoretical. Only further research could confirm their effectiveness prior to use in actual patients, the Houston researchers stressed.
A second study was led by biologist Nevan Krogan of the University of California, San Francisco. It found that nearly 70 drugs – some already approved, some still experimental – might prove effective against the novel coronavirus.
Krogan’s group has so far only published their findings on the website bioRxiv, and the findings have been submitted to a medical journal, The New York Times reported.
In this effort, the researchers took a deep dive into the genetic makeup of the novel coronavirus, focusing on key proteins the virus uses to hijack the genetic machinery of a host human cell. The coronavirus uses the cell’s protein to then manufacture millions of copies of itself.
Krogan’s team searched for drugs that target the same human cellular proteins that the virus also targets during its invasion of the host cell. They uncovered 24 drugs already approved by the FDA for use against a wide range of diseases, such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease and high blood pressure.
Also on the list were certain antibiotics; metformin, the go-to drug for type 2 diabetes; the schizophrenia drug haloperidol; and the malaria drug chloroquine.
Well-run trials essential
The latter drug gained prominence after President Donald Trump suggested at a recent news briefing that it might work against Covid-19. But Dr Anthony Fauci, the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, quickly qualified that statement, saying there was only “anecdotal evidence” that chloroquine might work against the new coronavirus.
He stressed that only well-run trials could prove effectiveness; such trials are being planned by the WHO and the state of New York, the Times noted.
And there’s a potentially lethal downside to trying any of the aforementioned drugs on your own, experts warned.
That danger was illustrated in a tragedy occurring just this week. According to the Washington Post, one Arizona couple in their 60s took matters into their own hands after watching Trump’s news briefing. Buoyed by his words on chloroquine, the couple self-treated with the drug – which they had previously used to clean their koi pond.
After mixing the chemical with soda and drinking it, they each felt dizzy and started vomiting. The husband died at the hospital, and the wife is still under critical care in the hospital, the Post reported.
A number of ongoing efforts
So, don’t “self-medicate” with any of these drugs until better research is done. Krogan’s collaborators at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and the Pasteur Institute in Paris have already begun testing the mettle of 22 compounds on their list against the coronavirus, under laboratory conditions, the Times said.
The new coronavirus first appeared in China in late 2019. As of 23 March, there had been nearly 335 000 cases of Covid-19 and nearly 14 700 deaths worldwide, according to the WHO.
There are a number of ongoing efforts to develop effective treatments and vaccines, but no clear treatment or prevention strategies currently exist.
