News24.com | One of the accused in Vanderbijlpark child kidnapping case intends reappllying for bail
The case of four people accused of kidnapping a 6-year-old Vanderbijlpark girl may see more twists over the next few weeks.
This after the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court heard on Tuesday that one of them, who had been denied bail, intends to reapply based on new facts that have come to light.
Pieter Jacobus van Zyl, who is the third accused in the matter, through his legal representative Thabelo Tshitaka, informed the court that he intends to reapply for bail. Tshitaka added that he would be requesting a transcript from the clerk’s office before proceeding with the bail application.
Van Zyl appeared in court alongside suspended Grade RR teacher Tharina Human, Laetitia Nel and Bafokeng Molemohi on Tuesday morning.
The four are accused of kidnapping the girl outside her school on September 2 last year.
State prosecutor Luanda Ngcobo submitted to Magistrate Hussain Kotha that a date for trial in the High Court was still unavailable.
According to the indictment, the four accused allegedly contravened the provisions of Section 18(2)(A) of the Riotous Assemblies Act 17 of 1956 by committing conspiracy to commit kidnapping, alternatively attempted kidnapping, kidnapping and attempted extortion.
DNA
Human’s lawyer David Mey informed the court that the defence team had been told that an issue regarding DNA was outstanding and would be finalised within two weeks.
The matter was postponed to March 27 in order to obtain a High Court date. If the transcript is made available for Van Zyl, a reapplication for bail will also get under way.
Human, Van Zyl and Molemohi remain in custody while Nel’s bail has been extended.
News24 is not naming the girl, following a Constitutional Court ruling in December last year that the media is not allowed to publish the identity of child victims, accused or witnesses in criminal proceedings, even after they reach the age of 18.
News24 previously reported that the apex court had also declared Section 154 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Act constitutionally invalid, because the provision did not protect the identity of child victims of crimes in criminal proceedings.
The section only protected child accused and witnesses, but not victims.
News24.com | WATCH | Seeing red: EFF furious after being kicked out of Eastern Cape SOPA for wearing overalls
Four EFF MPLs were forcefully removed from the Eastern Cape legislature for wearing red overalls during the State of the Province Address (SOPA) by Premier Oscar Mabuyane, on Tuesday.
Outnumbered by the security dressed in black and white, the EFF members were seen fighting to stay in the precinct.
EFF Eastern Cape leader Yazini Tetyane said they had been removed for questioning Speaker Helen Sauls-August on rules regarding dress code.
“She suspended the rules. She indicated we must not raise point of orders. They said we must leave the house and we fought back. The bone of contention is the dress code. The Constitution applies to all provinces; why is this province any different. How can the house follow a rule that bars us from wearing overalls to the house?”
Relentless in his resolve, Tetyane said the party caucus would come dressed in red overalls when they debate the State of the Province Address next week.
Reacting to the incident, former EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi tweeted: “Nothing is more unconstitutional than removing public representatives voted for by hundreds of thousands of people simply because you don’t like how they are dressed. The right to hold public office belongs in Bill of Rights 19.3(a) without it, ours would cease to be a democracy.”
Sauls-August spokesperson Lwandile Sicwetsha said the rules of the Eastern Cape legislature were clear on dress code. He said in preparation for this years Sopa, all parties were reminded of the rules however the EFF did not attend the meetings.
“They know the rules of the legislature do not allow the dress code. They have to understand that the legislature has its own rules. The decision taken at national assembly does not override the rules of the legislature. As long as we have these rules they will apply.”
The rules which were established during the sixth administration indicating that all MPL’s cannot wear gumboots, shorts, and jeans among others, he said.
Health24.com | Caregivers, are you neglecting your own health to take care of others?
It’s an act of love, but sometimes it entails exhaustion, frustration, anxiety and depression. Caregiver stress, the physical and emotional strain of caring for a loved one with a disability or health problem, can endanger your own health and place the person you care for at risk too.
According to a recent study by the American Psychological Association, many caregivers neglect their own health, particularly by not having health insurance, or putting off important health services due to cost.
“Caregivers provide tremendous benefits for their loved ones, yet they may themselves be at risk for lacking access to needed services which puts their health in jeopardy,” said Jacob Bentley, PhD, of Seattle Pacific University, co-author of the study.
In the study, published in the journal Rehabilitation Psychology, Bentley explains that they found that caregivers were more likely not to have health care coverage or forgo needed medical appointments and services. Even more concerning is that they were also increased risk for experiencing depression in their lifetime.
Coping without support services
The study excluded professional caregivers, and took a close look solely at those who provide care to family and friends instead. It used data from more than 24 000 people who participated in the 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System annual phone survey conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Up to eight hours per week went into providing care, which included typical household tasks such as cleaning and cooking. However, the majority of the participants felt that they did not need support services, such as support groups or individual counselling. This indicates that additional research into alternative support services that are prioritised by caregivers is needed, said Bentley.
Neglected healthcare
Caregivers were reported to have:
- A 26% higher risk of not having health care coverage, compared with non-caregivers.
- A significantly higher risk for not going to the doctor or accessing a necessary health service due to cost.
- One-fourth of the caregivers reported that they had been diagnosed with a depressive disorder by a health care provider at some point during their lives, further representing a 36% increased risk over non-caregivers.
The disparities could be due to financial constraints that caregivers face, said Bentley and his colleagues, as caregivers’ duties often means sacrificing their financial security in the process as seeking employment outside the home, or advancing their careers is unlikely.
The discovery should serve as evidence for policymakers to focus on public health agendas, said the researchers, “because they have the power to develop policies aimed at reducing financial burdens and health care service gaps among caregivers who are vital not only to those in our communities who need care, but also to our overall health care economy”.
A South African perspective
Some of the most common health conditions that may require a caregiver include cancer, stroke, incontinence, and mental illness.
A 2017 study that looked at the experiences of South African family caregivers caring for cancer patients found that participants were overwhelmed with their care responsibilities, which were particularly aggravated by poverty.
Some reported feeling “emotionally broken and alone” in their journey of caregiving, and felt like their lives had been put on hold in that they often ended up neglecting normal activities and relationships with their partners or children in order to take care of the sick person.
Managing caregiver burnout
If you think your health may be taking a toll on your caregiving, Caregiver Stress has the following tips to help you identify whether it’s time you sought help:
- Do you easily feel irritable or angry?
- Do you often cry unexpectedly, or have dramatic mood swings?
- Do you have trouble falling and staying asleep?
- Have you recently gained or lost weight?
- Is it hard to concentrate when performing mental tasks?
- Have you developed high blood pressure?
- Do you feel socially isolated, like nobody understands?
If you answered “yes” to the majority of these questions, it could be a signal that you shouldn’t put your own health on hold. Eating healthily, being active, and joining a caregiver support group, either in your own community or online are some of the things you can do to ease your frustration and stress.

Sport24.co.za | Bavuma, Klaasen no certainties for deciding Aussie T20
Cape Town – Temba Bavuma and Heinrich Klaasen will undergo fitness tests ahead of the third and deciding T20 against Australia at Newlands on Wednesday to determine their availability.
Both batsmen missed the first two matches of the series – Bavuma with a hamstring strain and Klaasen with a hip injury – but are understood to have been recovering well.
Bavuma solidified his position at the top of the order alongside Quinton de Kock with scores 43, 31 and 49 in the T20 series against England while Klaasen smashed 66 (33) in the third T20 against the same opposition.
“They’re going to be doing fitness tests this afternoon, so we’ll have to wait and see what the outcome is. Hopefully it’s positive,” Proteas assistant coach Enoch Nkwe said at a sweltering Newlands on Tuesday.
In Bavuma’s absence the Proteas tried Rassie van der Dussen (6 off 10) and Reeza Hendricks (14 off 17) opening alongside skipper De Kock for the first and second T20s, respectively, and Nkwe acknowledged that missing Bavuma was not ideal given his current form.
“We’ve missed him, but we have a big enough squad with good enough players that are flexible to bat in different positions,” said Nkwe.
“We have looked at it as an opportunity to see which other players can adapt. We know that we’ve got a World Cup coming, so we need to try different combinations.
“In saying that, Temba has been playing well so hopefully he will be back in the mix as soon as possible.
“If he’s not available, we will just look at what is going to be best for these conditions here in Cape Town.”
The series is tied at 1-1 and play on Wednesday starts at 18:00.
