According to a friend of his family, Moroka Joseph Letuma would often cross the Sand River on horseback.
On February 8, he again went out to cross the river, which had swelled its banks owing to recent rain in the area.
His horse returned home by itself and Letuma has not been seen since. His cellphone had been switched off.

EFF leader Julius Malema believes that although former president Jacob Zuma must bring himself before a court of law on the charges he faces, he is too old to go to jail.
Speaking at the Cape Town Press Club on Friday, Malema, who was seen as a thorn on Zuma’s side in his last few years as head of state, said he didn’t necessarily believe the former leader should be jailed.
“If there are charges against him, he must go to court and answer to those charges,” said Malema.
Zuma faces 16 charges of fraud, money laundering, corruption and racketeering linked to 783 payments that French arms company Thales allegedly made to him in connection with the infamous arms deal in 1999. It saw Zuma’s former close associate Schabir Shaik sentenced to 15 years in jail for corruption.

Shaik was convicted of two counts of corruption and one of fraud, relating to his facilitation of a bribe, allegedly by the French arms company to Zuma.
After serving just over two years of his sentence, Shaik was released on medical parole on March 3, 2009.
“Jail time for an old person like that [referring Zuma] is not suitable. What kind of society have we become to jail such old people?” Malema asked.
On February 4, KwaZulu-Natal High Court Judge Dhaya Pillay acceded to a request from the State to issue an arrest warrant for Zuma over his non-attendance at his corruption trial.
Zuma’s legal team had submitted documents to the court, saying the former president was ill and had not been in the country since January 23.

State prosecutor Billy Downer, however, requested information from the defence regarding Zuma’s ailments, which they were yet to receive. The State also raised questions over Zuma’s medical note submitted to the court.
The warrant has been suspended until his next court appearance in May.
“The purpose of jail is correctional, we correct you and send you back to society. What about Zuma is going to be corrected because he is an old man?” Malema asked, suggesting a different punishment might be more fitting.
During Zuma’s presidency, EFF MPs, including Malema himself, consistently challenged the former president in Parliament, calling for him to pay back money from his Nkandla homestead security upgrades and for him to be jailed for corruption.
Following a Constitutional Court judgment in 2016 which ruled that Zuma had failed to uphold the Constitution by not complying with then Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s remedial action regarding payment for the upgrades to his Nkandla homestead, the EFF had went through great lengths to seeking parliament to take action against the him, News24 reported.

Last year, however, speaking after a church service at the Apostolic Faith Mission River of Life in Soshanguve, Malema said the sermon, which was about forgiveness had moved him to forgive the former president.
“I was even saying to the pastor that we’ve forgiven Zuma because of the sermon. So Zuma must thank the pastor, because we’ve got wisdom from the pastor,” Malema said then.

Cape Town – Eoin Morgan was full of praise for Tom Curran after the paceman held his nerve to help England secure a dramatic two-run win over South Africa at Durban to level the Twenty20 series.
Curran was able to defend 15 off the last over and three from the final two balls, pinning Dwaine Pretorius lbw before a back-of-the-hand slower delivery saw new man Bjorn Fortuin ramp to Adil Rashid at short fine-leg.
The tourists therefore defended 204 for seven in another last-ball thriller – two days after South Africa had prevailed by one run at East London – to set up a decider in this three-match series at Centurion on Sunday.
That would not have happened without Curran, who may not have been in the line-up had Jofra Archer been available, and the performance means England seem to be well-stocked with fast bowlers ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup.
England captain Morgan said: “Probably with two balls to go, it was South Africa’s game to lose, they were in an unbelievably commanding position.
“The ball that had been reverse swinging had been hit out of the ground and we were back with a normal ball so it was really tough work.
“I thought Tom Curran did an unbelievable job to get the wicket (of Pretorius).
“The more options we have for guys bowling at the death… variation in the big overs is completely invaluable.
“We’ve got guys getting injured all the time, particularly fast bowlers, so I don’t think you can have enough guys in your squad of players to deliver that sort of skill. That creates good, healthy competition.”
England were indebted to Moeen Ali’s incredible 39, in which seven of the 11 balls he faced were dispatched to the boundary in a high-scoring game.
Morgan said: “Moeen Ali’s runs at the end were extremely valuable. He’s obviously extremely easy on the eye, very elegant, and relies on his timing a lot. We saw a full swing of the bat which was great.
“We know when he hits form he does run on with it because he is a very confidence-built player which is great, his confidence is high at the moment.”
However, Moeen and then every frontline England bowler came in for heavy punishment from South Africa captain Quinton De Kock, whose 17-ball fifty was the fastest by a South African in T20 internationals.
He eventually holed out to deep midwicket off Mark Wood for 65 from 22 deliveries, which contained two fours and eight sixes, in an innings that gave his side a great opportunity to secure a series win.
Morgan added: “When he plays like that he’s obviously in fantastic form, but he’s taking big risks because he’s in great form.
“When you take big risks, it brings the opposition in because, if you can get a bowler to trust bowling his best ball or bowling to the plan that we’ve committed to bowling, you’re going to get a chance along the line.
“The other side of that is you might lose the game quite quickly. I thought he played extremely well so full credit to him but nice to get a chance when we did.”
De Kock was phlegmatic after watching South Africa stumble to defeat.
He said: “I’m disappointed we didn’t cross the line, it would have been nice. But it’s just the way things go.”

Optimism might be powerful medicine when recovering from a stroke, a new study suggests.
Stroke survivors who had positive outlooks showed lower levels of inflammation, reduced stroke severity and fewer physical impairments after three months compared to more pessimistic stroke survivors, the researchers found.
“Our results suggest that optimistic people have a better disease outcome, thus, boosting morale may be an ideal way to improve mental health and recovery after a stroke,” study first author Yun-Ju Lai said in an American Heart Association (AHA) news release.
The research was funded by the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the AHA. Lai is a postdoctoral fellow in the neurology department at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.
The study involved a group of 49 stroke survivors. Researchers analysed the connections between optimism, inflammation, stroke severity and physical disability. They found that as optimism increased, levels of inflammatory markers such as interlukin-6 and C-reactive protein decreased.
Getting a better understanding of the relationship between these elements could help develop new strategies for stroke recovery, Lai and her colleagues said.
Experiencing inflammation after a stroke can damage the brain and hinder recovery, they explained.
The lower levels of inflammation associated with optimism translated into better patient outcomes, though the study did not prove a cause-and-effect link. Optimism levels were determined by a standard psychological test for measuring optimism.
The findings are to be presented next week at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference, in Los Angeles. Such research is considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
“Patients and their families should know the importance of a positive environment that could benefit the patient,” Lai said. “Mental health does affect recovery after a stroke.”
