News24.com | SONA 2020 | Groans, delays, an EFF walkout and a surprise vacant seat
There were points of order, a rugby world champion and a Miss Universe in the public gallery, but as the State of the Nation Address got going, and the EFF left the House, someone else was no longer in her seat…
The EFF came into the National Assembly chamber singing, all wearing more or less the same outfits, led by their “commander-in-chief” Julius Malema. By that time most of the other MPs had already trickled in and taken selfies with their colleagues.
Also already seated were Springbok rugby captain Siya Kolisi and Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, who was seated next to Sinoyolo Qumba, a Grade 11 pupil from Lenasia South, who helped President Cyril Ramaphosa write his speech. They were in the presidential box in the public gallery, which also included former finance minister Trevor Manuel.
Tunzi was on her phone, waving at somebody on the floor of the chamber. Also on her phone, and waving in Tunzi’s direction, was Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.
Also in the public gallery were National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi, Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu, Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, and Reserve Bank governor Lesetja Kganyago.
Two of the EFF’s recent targets – former deputy president and last apartheid president FW de Klerk and Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan – seemed rather nonplussed by the EFF’s singing. De Klerk was spotted chatting to former president Kgalema Motlanthe, while Gordhan was in conversation with ANC MP Yunus Carrim and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi.
Points of order
The EFF continued singing while the processions with the premiers and speakers of the provincial legislatures entered the House, but they stopped their singing and stiid and applauded when the judiciary entered the chamber, led by a smiling Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
The whole House, public gallery included, stood and applauded the judges, except what appeared to be Mkhwebane and the two seats next to her.
The EFF ensured that they applauded the judges the longest and then continued with their singing, even when the presidential procession entered.
Soon after National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise allowed the moment of reflection, Malema was on his feet, raising the first of many points of order from the EFF. They wanted De Klerk removed.
Ramaphosa was still in his seat, mostly scrolling through his cellphone while the EFF raised their points of order – expressionless. When Modise laid down the law, he looked up, in her direction, still expressionless.
It was impossible to discern De Klerk’s expression from the media gallery. But one thing was for sure, he didn’t budge while the EFF had a good go at him.
Seated not far from him was Baleka Mbete. She presided over many an EFF disturbance in the previous Parliament, but is now the former speaker of the National Assembly.
Attacks on De Klerk, Gordhan
Eventually, the EFF let the De Klerk matter go and Ramaphosa got behind the podium. He hardly had time to say hello, before EFF MP Vuyani Pambo got up on a point of order directed at Gordhan. The minster had a little smile.
As the EFF got going with their points of order, Ramaphosa took his seat and paged through a printed copy of, presumably, his speech. After a short suspension of the House, Malema made a speech, calling Gordhan “Jamnandas”. Gordhan shook his head.
As the EFF marched out of the chamber, some pointed in Gordhan’s direction while singing. He stared them down.
At least two EFF MPs threw bottles at other MPs as they left the chamber.
After short statements by every party condemning the EFF’s behaviour, Ramaphosa finally got into his speech.
As he greeted the long list of people, Gordhan was chatting to Police Minister Bheki Cele, who was seated in the bench next to him. With the EFF out, things took on a much more slumberous atmosphere.
Ramaphosa elicited a few cheers from the DA benches when he announced that municipalities would be allowed to procure electricity from independent power producers.
Every once in awhile, there was polite applause from the ANC benches.
“Oooooh,” groaned the DA on two occasions when Ramaphosa mentioned his deputy, David Mabuza. The first time Mabuza didn’t show any reaction, the second time he grinned at them.
When Ramaphosa spoke about state capture, Jacob Zuma’s son Duduzane Zuma, who was seated in the public gallery, showed no emotion.
By this time, Mkhwebane was no longer seen in her spot in the public gallery.
News24.com | Stolen bakkie leads to arrest of cash-in-transit robbery suspects
A bakkie that was used as a getaway vehicle following a cash-in-transit robbery in June last year has linked five accused to robberies committed in KwaZulu-Natal last year.
Bheki Godfrey Sifiso Ndlovu, 42, Zenzele Gumede, 37, Bongani Madlala, 47, Mpumelelo Ntshangashe, 46, and Zwanani Goodman Cele, 31, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday after they were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, Tactical Response Team and Dog Unit on charges of armed robbery which took place in the Southport area last year.
According to Hawks spokesperson Andrea Naicker, towards the end of August last year, the dockets were transferred to the Hawks for further investigation and, during intensive investigation, the accused were linked to the crimes and arrested on charges of armed robbery.
“The accused had been in custody following their arrest for a cash-in-transit case and the possession of unlicensed firearms. The [owner] of a [stolen] bakkie, which was taken in June 2019, identified them upon their recent court appearance,” Naicker said.
The case has been remanded to March 26 in the Pietermaritzburg High Court for a pre-trial conference where the accused will face charges of cash-in-transit robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and armed robbery.

Sport24.co.za | Stormers expect to lose perfect defensive record against Lions
Lloyd Burnard – Sport24
Cape Town – The Stormers are expecting to lose their perfect defensive record in Super Rugby this season when they travel to Ellis Park for a clash against the Lions on Saturday.
Two wins from two – against the Hurricanes (27-0) and then Bulls (13-0) at home – left the Stormers on top of the South African Conference and overall log heading into round three of fixtures. More impressive than that, however, is the fact that they have not conceded a point along the way.
With this the final season at Newlands before an almost certain move to Cape Town Stadium in 2021, the Stormers are more motivated than ever to turn the iconic stadium into a fortress one last time and that mentality is reflecting in their defensive efforts.
An undeniably physical pack has helped, while defence coach Norman Laker is receiving the necessary plaudits.
Head coach John Dobson knows, however, that his side’s defensive lines will be breached at some point and he believes that it could happen on Saturday at what he considers a historically high-scoring venue.
The Lions, having gone down to the Jaguares (38-8) in Buenos Aires before edging the Reds (27-20) at home last weekend, are a new-look side and appear some way off the title-challengers they were under Johan Ackerman and Swys de Bruin from 2016-2018.
There is still enough quality there to suggest that they can hurt sides when they get it right, though, and Dobson is expecting there to be more disruption to the scoreboard this weekend.
“There is going to be a ‘wooh-wooh-wooh’ moment from the first team that scores against us and of course it’s going to happen,” Dobson told media at Newlands on Thursday.
“I’m interested in the tries column. I accept that they’re going to kick penalties.
“It’s going to happen, and we expect that, but we’ve got a certain standard.
“Ellis Park, by nature, is where you’d have an All Blacks game there 15 years ago and it was 44-40 where at Newlands it’s 12-3.
“I think if you go to Ellis Park and concede one or two tries, you’ve won the game.
“I definitely want to see the same standard defensively, because I think we can set a competition marker down there.”
While keeping up that intensity and clinical effectiveness of defence is obviously high up on Dobson’s list of priorities, he also wants to see an improved and more ruthless attacking display.
“I want to see us attack with a bit more rhythm,” he said.
The Stormers go into the match without injured Springbok scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies, who is replaced by Godlen Masimla, while the Lions have selected the returning Willem Alberts on their bench.
“I’m very excited about Godlen,” Dobson added.
“He’s a guy who has been through the trials and tribulations.
“Physically and in terms of his kicking game, he’s a different person to what he was so I’m really excited for this opportunity for him.”
Kick-off is at 15:05 on Saturday.
Teams:
Lions
15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Tyrone Green, 13 Manuel Rass, 12 Dan Kriel, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Elton Jantjies (captain), 9 Morne van den Berg, 8 Len Massyn, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Marnus Schoeman, 5 Marvin Orie, 4 Ruben Schoeman, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Pieter Jansen, 1 Dylan Smith

Stormers
15 Dillyn Leyds, 14 Sergeal Petersen, 13 Ruhan Nel, 12 Jamie Roberts, 11 Seabelo Senatla, 10 Damian Willemse, 9 Godlen Masimla, 8 Juarno Augustus, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Johan du Toit, 5 Chris van Zyl, 4 Salmaan Moerat, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Scarra Ntubeni, 1 Steven Kitshoff (captain)

Health24.com | The 10 best calorie-burning exercises – ranked
If you’re dedicating valuable time in your day to a sweat sesh, chances are you want to know it’s actually worth your time, right? Okay, now raise your hand if you’ve heard different fitness philosophies about the most-effective way to rev your heart rate. Specifically, some people say cardio is the ultimate calorie-burner, while other swear by strength training. Well, it’s time to set the record straight.
It’s true that people tend to expend more calories in the moment while doing cardio exercise like running when compared to lifting weights, says Laura Miranda, a doctor of physical therapy, fitness nutrition specialist, and certified personal trainer. “But weights, or anaerobic workouts, keep our excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), or post-workout calorie burn, going from hours to days.” So you shouldn’t count them out entirely when you’re creating a cardio training plan.
The reason weight training has such a prolonged calorie-burn effect is because the greater the intensity, the more oxygen your body will need post-workout to recover and repair muscles, explains Miranda. By choosing exercises that ramp up that afterburn effect, “you get more bang for your buck in the long term,” she says. “Muscle is the most metabolically active tissue, so the more of it we have, the more effective we are at burning calories all day long.”
But yeah, which exercises burn the most calories exactly? Unsurprisingly, on a list of the best burners below — ranked in order of effectiveness — aerobic exercise tends to win in terms of immediate results. (FYI: Calorie burn is estimated for a 56-kilo person and a 84-kilo person, according to guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine. The more you weigh, the more calories you tend to burn on any particular task — but a lot of other factors come in to play, too, so this isn’t an exact science.) But there a quite a few top contenders from the weight category too.
No matter which type of workouts you choose, opt for the “bonus burn” — tips from Miranda and New York City-based trainer Noam Tamir, owner of TS Fitness — to torch even more total calories.
10 Best Exercises For Weight Loss
1. Jumping rope
The burn: 667–990 calories/hour if you’re jumping at 120 skips per minute
The bonus burn: Try using a weighted jump rope to engage your arms and shoulders even more.
2. Running Up Hill/Stair Sprints
The burn: 639–946 calories/hour
The bonus burn: “You want to sprint at a pace that you can only maintain for about 20 seconds, and follow that with a recovery run at half of the intensity of the sprint and double the time,” says Miranda.
READ MORE: 10 Of The Best Fat-Burning Workouts You Can Do At The Gym
3. Kickboxing
The burn: 582–864 calories/hour
The bonus burn: Make sure you keep the rest periods between rounds of jabs and kicks super short. Aim for 30 seconds of rest for every 90 seconds of sparring.
4. Cycling intervals
The burn: 568–841 calories/hour
The bonus burn: Adding high-intensity intervals throughout a steady-state or low-intensity ride will increase the afterburn even more.
5. Running
The burn: 566–839 calories/hour at a 10-minute mile pace
The bonus burn: Run at a steady-state pace (i.e. a 7 out of 10 in terms of effort), and you’ll continue to burn extra calories over the rest of the day.
To torch more during and after your workout, add short bursts of sprints or faster running into your jog, says Tamir. He recommends keeping a 2:1 work-to-rest ratio to get the most afterburn. For example, if you run for 60 seconds, walk 30 seconds.
6. Kettlebell circuit
The burn: 554–822 calories/hour
The bonus burn: Tamir says that a HIIT circuit using kettlebells can keep the afterburn going for 36 hours after you leave the gym. To get the best results, make sure you’re not stopping to rest between each move.
Tamir recommends switching between upper- and lower-body movements so you can keep exercising for a longer period of time. Try doing a set of kettlebell swings, kettlebell squats, and kettlebell push presses. Then, rest for 15 to 20 seconds after completing the three moves.
7. Stationary bike
The burn: 498–738 calories/hour (at a vigorous pace)
The bonus burn: To get the most afterburn, Tamir says to start with 10 seconds of intense pedalling (100 RPMs or more) and 50 seconds of rest. Then, move to 15 seconds of sprints and 45 seconds of rest, and do 20 seconds of sprints 40 seconds of rest after that. Don’t forget to turn up the resistance as you progress!
READ MORE: 5 Non-Boring Cardio Moves That Do Wonders For Torching Fat
8. Rowing machine
The burn: 481–713 calories/hour at 150 watts, which you can check on the machine
The bonus burn: To get maximum torching power, row in super-fast, one-minute intervals (150 watts), and take 30- to 60-second active rest periods by alternating between squats, pushups, and planks.
9. Loaded kettlebell carries
The burn: 476–705 calories/hour
The bonus burn: Walking with weighted kettlebells forces you to practice strong posture and core control. “My fav method is the three-in-one,” says Miranda. “Start walking with two kettlebells overhead, walk as far as you can until you need to stop. Then, drop the bells to the front racked position and continue walking until you need to stop again. Finally, drop them down to the farmer’s carry position (at your sides), and continue walking as long as you can.” This is one cycle, rest two minutes, then repeat.
10. Stairs
The burn: 452–670 calories/hour when going 77 steps per minute
The bonus burn: To up the ante, hold a two- to four-kilo dumbbell in each hand to get your upper body fired up, too.
Bottom line: Whether you’re working the Stair Master or running steps around town, à la Rocky, stair climbing provides a good mix of aerobic and anaerobic exercise.
